The second semester examination and other academic activities at the Lagos State University (LASU) were put on hold on Thursday, as students protested the recent increment on their tuition fees by the state government.
The students, led by their union president, Akeem Olalekan, stormed the popular Lagos-Badagry Road early in the morning, calling on the government to rescind its decision or face their wrath.
The protest, which led to a heavy vehicular traffic on Lagos-Iba Road, where the campus was situated, stopped some final year students of the institution from writing their test.
In their anger, the students hijacked a trailer and a vehicle belonging to the state Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to block the road as commuters were stranded.
However, the Lagos State police command had directed its unit, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), to curb any criminal activities that might arise from the protest, which lasted for several hours.
High number of armed police officers were on the ground to control traffic and curb the protesters.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that government had increased the tuition fees by about 1000 per cent, a situation in which a student who paid N25,000 before would now pay about N235,000.
