Abramovich bites back in battle of the billionaire

Roman Abramovich today branded Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky a 'megalomaniac' who used him as a 'cash cow' to fund his lavish lifestyle.

The Chelsea Football Club boss stepped into the witness box in London's High Court to defend himself against allegations of blackmail and intimidation in a £3.5billion damages claim brought against him.

Giving his evidence in Russian through an interpreter, the 45-year-old denies cheating Boris Berezovsky, 65, out of the true value of oil and aluminium shares.

Roman Abramovich (left) and Boris Berezovsky (right) arrive at the High Court in London today. Mr Berezovsky is suing the Chelsea owner for billions of pounds
In a sworn witness statement, Mr Abramovich denied ever being a partner or friend to Mr Berezovsky.
He instead described him as his 'political godfather' who he paid as a 'protector', a powerful man who could smoothe the way for him to found the oil company Sibneft.
Mr Abramovich told the hearing: 'He was first and foremost a politician. I was not his protege and he was not my mentor.'

He said it was not possible to achieve his goal in creating Sibneft without the political influence wielded by Mr Berezovsky, who 'saw himself as a kingmaker'.
But he added: 'What is absolutely clear is that we were never partners in the sense that I understand an English partnership to be.'

Mr Abramovich said the whole point of securing this protection was for other people to feel that Sibneft was his - but for that, he said, 'you were expected to pay Mr Berezovsky whatever he asked, whenever he asked'.

Nigeria’s political structure wasteful

Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi yesterday said that the present political structures of Nigeria are too cumbersome and economically wasteful to guarantee rapid development of the country.

Sanusi who spoke as the Guest Speaker on the occasion of the presentation of professor Adamu Baike’s book, “Against All Odds” at Arewa House, Kaduna noted that the present 36 States are spending 96 percent of their revenues to pay salaries of their respective civil servants in an economy that is to develop on a long term basis, and posed a rhetorical question, “do we need 36 States, do we need the number of ministries that we have”?

He also pointed out that the Federal government is spending 70 percent of its total revenue to pay workers’ salaries as well as taking care of the overhead cost, maintaining that it has denied the growth of some vital sectors of the socio-economy of the nation, leaving only 30 percent for 150 million Nigerians.
The CBN boss whose paper presentation was entitled, “Re-Invigorating Education In Nigeria”, lamented that there are 71, 000 Nigerian students in Ghana who are paying not less than 155 billion naira as tuition annually, compared with the annual budget of 121 billion naira for the entire federal university education in Nigeria.

According to him, “ltimately we will have to be confronted with the task of taking very difficult steps in looking at the political structures that we have, do we need 36 States, do we need the number of ministries that we have, it is an economy in which States spend 96 percent of their revenues to pay their civil servants, an economy that is likely to be developed in the long term.?
“These are difficult questions that we need to ask, we have created States and local governments and ministries structures that are economically unviable, and the result is that we do not have funding for infrastructures, we do not have funding for education, we do not have funding for health.

“I don’t know how many people know that 70 percent of the total revenue of the Federal government is spent paying salaries and over head, and leaving the remaining 30 percent for 150 million Nigerians.
“For example, according to a newspaper account, and quoting the chairman, committee of governing councils of Nigerian Federal Universities: “there are 71, 000 Nigerian students in Ghana who pay not less than 155 billion naira as tuition annually, compared with the annual budget of 121 billion naira for the entire federal university education in Nigeria. Findings placed Nigeria third on the list of countries with the highest number of students studying overseas.

“The poor state of education is also manifested in dearth of functional libraries, poor state of learning infrastructure, limited access to recent advances in various spheres of knowledge, and longer time required to complete a programme. Others include modality of teaching with instructional materials and facilities, lack of space for admission and irregularity in academics calendars of tertiary institutions arising from incessant strike actions embarked upon by both academic and non-academic staff union.

“In emerging economy like Nigeria, a well designed education policy should be an integral part of its development strategy; the present economic strategy should include measure to invest in human capital that facilitates in upgrading of industries, and ginger the economy to attain utmost resources utilization.

“It is not enough to simply lament the tragedy, let alone treat it with kid gloves, we completely agree with the House of Representatives that a state of emergency should be declared in our education sector now. Further procrastination on this very matter will inflate impracticable and irreversible damage to the nation.”

Nigerian Students in Ghana Pay N155 Billion as Tuition Annually

According to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Malam Lamido Sanusi, 71,000 Nigerian students in Ghana currently pay an annual tuition of N155Billion to Ghana.

Meanwhile the whole government budget for all Federal universities in Nigeria annually is a N121Billion.

The CBN Governor was drawing attention to the on-going serious capital flight from Nigeria.

Doesn't this call for a sober reflection? They only mentioned Ghana, what about the thousands of students in Malaysia (I hear there are so many of them there) in Europe, in India, in the US etc, paying trillions of Naira to get quality education.

Meanwhile, you will hardly find foreign students in Nigeria. Obviously there's need to reform the education system in Nigeria. So instead of complaining about money leaving Nigeria, they should do something about improving the quality of education in this country, so parents will stop sending their kids abroad.

BBC staff are trained on correct way to announce death of Queen

BBC staff are being trained on the correct way to report the Queen's death in a bid to avoid another embarrassing gaffe.

The Corporation was heavily criticised in the wake of the death of the Queen Mother after veteran Peter Sissons went on air in a grey suit and burgundy tie.

Staff at the organisation's College Of Journalism have been shown mock videos featuring Huw Edwards announcing that the Queen has passed away.

BBC chiefs hope the Royal funeral training will avoid a repeat of the faux pas by former newsreader Peter Sissons, who in 2002, pronounced the Queen Mother's death, dressed in a grey suit accompanied with a burgundy tie.

In the aftermath of her death, the BBC switchboard received numerous complaints from audiences over the handling of the announcement, worsened by rival broadcaster ITV, were presenters adhered to the traditional black tie attire for the broadcast.

The BBC has since changed its policy and reporters will be instructed to wear dark coloured suits, with the male broadcasters in white shirts and black ties as a mark or respect.

Sissons' gaffe is not the first time the BBC has come under fire from the royals, with Prince Charles famously caught slating Witchell during a press-call at the ski resort of Klosters in 2005.

Witchell, who has been the BBC's royal correspondent for the last 13 years, riled Prince Charles after asking him how his sons, Princes William and Harry felt about his decision to marry Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles.

Libyans demolish dictator's former home as diplomat warns of 'revenge culture

It once symbolised Gaddafi's brutal hold over Libya, an untouchable fortress where the despot dictator lived a life of luxury as his people suffered.

And as the country slowly puts itself back together, bulldozers took to the Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli to bring down the palace of the dictator who tore their country apart.

As Libyans watched as the walls, which once protected Gaddafi were torn down at the compound in Tripoli today, others fled the town which was most loyal to the dead leader.

The country's interim leaders have appealed for restraint, but seem unable to control revolutionary forces whose recent vigilante acts, including the suspected killing of Gaddafi while in custody, have begun to tarnish their heroic image abroad.

A Western diplomat said Libya's new leaders need to come out more strongly against the culture of revenge, and hold the former fighters accountable for their actions.

Failure to resolve such conflicts and bring regime supporters, including in the badly damaged loyalist towns of Sirte and Bani Walid, into the fold could destabilize Libya and hamper the attempted transition to democracy, the diplomat warned, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive subject matter.

However, people in Misrata, which was heavily damaged during the war, are in no mood for reconciliation. The port city of 300,000 rose up early against Gaddafi and came under a weeks long siege by Gaddafi fighters, many from Tawergha which served as a staging ground for the loyalists.

Nearly 1,300 Misrata residents were killed and thousands wounded in the fighting, city officials say.

Misrata officials have accused the Tawerghans, some of them descendants of African slaves, of particular brutality during the war, including alleged acts of rape and looting. During the siege, Gadhafi fighters sniped at residents from roof tops and shelled the city indiscriminately.

Ibrahim Beitelmal, spokesman for Misrata's military council, said he believes Tawergha should be wiped off the map, but that the final decision is up to the national leadership. 'If it was my decision, I would want to see Tawergha gone. It should not exist,' said Beitelmal, whose 19-year-old son was killed in the fighting on Tripoli Street.

I watched in horror as policemen shot my son dead

When 25-year-old Emmanuel Victor, an indigene of Opubo Nkoro in Rivers State, left home for church in the morning of October 16, 2011 with his mother and siblings, there was no inkling he would not return home.

But that was to be his last outing on earth as some trigger happy cops not only put paid to his ambition of studying law at the university by cutting him down at his prime but also left his mother, Mrs. Grace Victor, and siblings devastated.

The killing of Emmanuel that Sunday afternoon, some distance from a police checkpoint along Sani Abacha expressway in the heart of Yenagoa, came barely five months after his arrival in the state capital to assist in the family business as a marketer.

He was killed right in the presence of his mother who watched in horror.

The deceased was shot severally, even after he had hit the ground. His offence? He was said to have challenged the police, asking them why even on Sunday they could not go to church but chose to extort money from commercial bike operators and other road users…that they often run for cover when they see armed robbers while they intimidate innocent, law abiding Nigerians.

Emmanuel is not around to give his own side of the story as his killers were alleged to have claimed that they acted in self defence when the deceased lunged at them with scissors and, in the process, injured three of them.

This claim was, however, debunked by eyewitnesses who insisted that the injuries on the policemen were self-inflicted to cover up the murder.

Narrating her ordeal, the bereaved mother, Mrs. Victor, said her son was killed in her presence by the policemen who shot repeatedly at him even after he had fallen on the ground.

The woman, in shock, noted that her son was cut down in his prime by those who were supposed to protect him, lamenting that he only came to Yenagoa in May, 2011 to work in the family business as a marketer and was not the type to move anyhow.

According to her, Emmanuel had nursed the ambition of studying law at the university.

Mrs. Victor, who gave a graphic account of what transpired that fateful day amidst sobs, said, “After the close of church, I came out and boarded a commercial motor bike and, not far from where I took off, I heard gun shots. I was scared and told the bike operator to stop for us to take cover.

“All of a sudden, I saw my son running and being chased by the police. Police vans were parked on both sides of the road.

And, when I discovered that it was my son they were chasing and about shooting, I ran towards one of their officers close to one of the vans. I told him, `please, that is my son, he is a brother (that is a believer)’.

“By this time, they were corking their guns. And, by the time the officer I approached could signal his colleagues to stop; they were already shooting at my son.”

Continuing, she said: “I saw him shoot with my two eyes, no mercy at all, they shot him brutally. As he fell while they were shooting him, the tallest of them still continued shooting at him on the ground to his satisfaction before he stopped. My son was holding a Bible when he was shot. I rushed, as a mother, to go and attend to him but they threatened that if I didn’t move back, they would shoot me. They made me to move back. I did not see any of the policemen with any stain of blood then. But they just picked his Bible and drove off. It was another police vehicle that came and picked him.”

According to the mother, though she was not there when the matter started between her son and the policemen, eye witnesses said the late Emmanuel made certain statements when he saw the cops extorting money from Okada riders and other road users….that the action of the policemen was wrong and that if they see armed robbers whether they would stay. “He even asked them that …even on Sunday, why they won’t go to church and leave extortion….This infuriated the policemen and they chased him and shot him dead.”

Anger by the action of the policemen especially at a time residents of the state were trying to put behind them the excesses of the outlawed Famou Tangbe security outfit, the Civil Liberties Organisation, Bayelsa State Chapter has vowed to take up take up the matter to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and called on the state commissioner of police to, as a matter of urgency, institute an investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to the killing of the youth.

The CLO, in a statement in Yenagoa by it’s secretary, Comrade Alagoa Morris, described the killing as one too many by the police in the state, saying, “We want these extra-judicial killings to stop and perpetrators made to face the law of the land.

“Now, no matter what happened, even though police statement is saying the boy was smoking hemp and even tried to fight them when they challenged him, can a 25-year old young man over power all those police officers that chased him? Was it proper to shoot at an unarmed Nigerian? Has the police the right to pass judgment and also sentence to death? These are few of the questions that the CLO and concerned Nigerians would like the police authorities to give answers to.”

Reacting to the incident, Governor Timipre Sylva called on the people of Bayelsa to go about their lawful business without any fear of harassment, intimidation or harassment even as he called on the new commissioner of police, Mr. Hillary Okpara, to investigate the alleged extra-judiciary killing at the police checkpoint in the state capital.

The state governor, in a statement by his chief press secretary I, Mr. Sampson Atasia Oburu, said “his administration is founded on the premise of justice, fairness and respect for the rule of law and would not fold its arms and watch innocent citizens being killed or maimed unjustly.”

Undergraduate victim of acid bath cries out for help

Franca Ogbu, a 22-year-old student of Federal University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State, used to be the cynosure of all eyes . In fact, several suitors have reportedly sought her hand in marriage, a request she often rejected politely, on the ground that she must at least, be in the university before thinking about marriage.

But when her desire of going to school was fulfilled last year, with it came an unfortunate incident that has currently crippled the life of the once beautiful girl. As you read this piece, the Benue State-born is lying critically ill at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, looking a shadow of her old self.

Franca, described as a promising child eventually had her dreams come through after she was offered admission into the Federal University of Technology, Yola, to study Economics. As she bade her parents goodbye, beaming with smiles and a mixed feeling of pains of missing her parents, she left with the little food stuffs her parents managed to get for her.

Franca... at the hospital bed
But her joy was short lived, six months into her education following an acid bath by a male student. Franca, according to the University authority, had on that fateful day, gone to class where she was reading, when all of a sudden, an incident that changed the entire course of her life happened.

Two students reportedly stormed the class. One of them was said to have walked up to the unsuspecting student who at the same time, raised up her head to see who the intruder was, only for the intruder to pour a liquid substance later discovered to be acid on her face.

Explaining, the Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Yola branch, Dr Usman Abubakar, alleged that one Chibuzor Bright was responsible. His action, he said, followed Franca’s objection to his several advances.

Speaking with Crime Guard, Dr Usman said, “Franca Ogbu Adima Paul, is a part I Economics student of Federal University of Technology, Yola (now Modibbo Adama University of Technology). Until the 5th of May, 2010, she was very normal. On that early morning, at about 1.15am, she was reading in the Mechanical Engineering Block of the Institution, in preparation for her examinations when suddenly, someone standing in front of her called her name and on raising her face up, she was spilled with concentrated acid. She is currently in the surgical ward of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The acid affected her head, face, chest, hand and mouth.”

Chibuzor , a final year Civil Engineering student, was alleged to have sponsored the dastardly act by using one Nelson who poured the acid. Already, it was learnt that the School authority has dismissed him after which he was subsequently arrested .

Franca has been lying on

the hospital bed for over one year with her face disfigured, owing to her parent’s inability to get the required amount of money to carry out a plastic surgery on her. Her parents who are peasant farmers have lost hope of their first daughter returning to her normal self. Presently, their greatest worry is not just the fact that the incident has incapacitated their daughter but the painful fact that the alleged assailant is said to be walking the streets freely.

For Franca to get back on her feet and carry on with her education, she needs the sum of N12 million for the surgery. So far, the Bauchi zone of ASUU comprising eight Universities in the North-Eastern Nigeria, as gathered, launched a campaign to raise the needed money to save Franca, with an account opened at the Fidelity Bank UNIMAID Branch. The account number is 6051446636 and the project account name is FRANCA TREATMENT.

The national body of ASUU which condemned the act in its entirety had, during one of its meetings in Ibadan , Oyo state, described the act as ‘a brutal act typically, man’s inhumanity to a fellow human being’”, calling on all well -meaning and sympathetic Nigerians, philanthropists and Civil Society Organizations, to contribute generously towards getting Franca back on her feet.

The hospital, as reliably gathered, had carried about 11 surgical operations on Franca for free. But she reportedly has 13 more operations to go, a financial burden too heavy for the parents to bear.

For a very long time that the issue of removal of fuel subsidy or no removal by the Federal Government has been in the news, little or nothing has been heard from the popular man of God of the Winners Chapel Ministry on the topic.

But penultimate Sunday, the renowned cleric, Bishop David Oyedepo broke silence on the contemporary issue.

According to the Bishop, he said he's not against the removal of subsidy but his great concern is what will be the fate of the money that will come in return.

The man of God bluntly asserted that the money will be stolen by the thieves at the helm of affairs with the claims that they are developing the nation.

The lively Bishop, however, related the unruly acts of some government officials as the unquenchable quest for wealth and absence of fear of God.

Frustrated HIV Patient Bathes Nurse With Acid

Could this be rightly described as a carry over aggression or arrant madness? This is the question on every lip begging for an answer especially the staff of Rivers State School of Health who were taken unawares Friday, October 21, 2011 in full public glare as an HIV patient bathed his counselor, and staff of the health institution, Mrs Ibuwari George in acid.

The HIV patient, a youngman in his late forties (name withheld) had arrived Mrs Ibuwari George’s unit for further counseling on the effects of his drugs, having called earlier to notify her of his coming for a chat not unrelated to his perceived deteriorating condition.

Unsuspicious of any ulterior motive, Mrs George, counselor for HIV infected mothers and children willingly agreed to the request. But little did she know that the patient’s humble request was anything but holy.

Upon arrival, the patient according to Mrs George began to complain that his health was failing him, which Mrs George advised was nothing to worry about so long he kept taking his drugs, promising that his system would soon get used to the drugs. What a psychotherapy and professional advice that fell only on the deaf ears of a dying man.

Prior to this unholy visit, the patient was said to have been calling and complaining of same feeling to which the innocent nurse had counseled him to keep faith with the prescribed drugs. He had earlier been certified sick with very low blood count after a test was conducted on him which prompted his being placed on drugs for boosting etc.

‘Nigeria has highest VVF prevalence rate in the world’

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Dr. Precious Gbeneol, has lamented the prevalence of the Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in the country, saying that the problem in Nigeria is the highest in the world.

Dr. Gbeneol disclosed this at the weekend during the closing ceremony of a training programme on VVF for 22 doctors and 32 nurses at the Babar Ruga VVF Centre, Katsina.

She said Nigeria has the highest prevalence of VVF in the world with about 400,000 – 800,000 women living with the problem and about 20,000 new cases occurring annually with 90 per cent untreated.

She attributed the problem to the inadequate and unequal distribution of VVF experts among Nigerians.

The SSA on MDGs who noted the need to intensify training for more doctors and nurses to handle the backlog of VVF in the country said there are thirteen centers currently offering surgical care to about 4000 VVF affected women per year to reduce the unacceptable high rate of maternal morbidity.

“It is against this backdrop and consequently in the bid to curb the high maternal morbidity and to fasttrack the attainment of the MDGs that my office, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, agreed to embark on this training since available hospital data has shown that VVF cases are prevalent in the country.”

She added that the objectives of the training is to improve the capacity of indigenous doctors and nurses on how to handle VVF diseases across the country and to update them on the best practices in general management of VVF.

Dr. Gbeneol, however, commended the state governor’s wife and people of the state for their passion and interest in curbing VVF prevalence in the state. She also commended the trainers for ensuring the passage of adequate knowledge and skills to the trainees.

While challenging the trainees to adequately use the skills and knowledge they acquired to properly manage the VVF cases in their various health facilities, the SSA on MDGs called on all stakeholders, including development partners in the health sector, to support VVF programme in the country to save the lives of women.

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Hand over power now! NLC tells Jonathan

The disagreement between the Federal Government and Labour over the planned removal of subsidy on petrol has deepened as Labour insisted on mass action against the policy even as it advised President Goodluck Jonathan to resign from office.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, made the call for Jonathan’s resignation against the backdrop of government’s disclosure last week that it was in the process of instituting a body of eminent and trusted Nigerians to manage the funds that would accrue from the removal of the subsidy on petrol. The position was in response to Labour’s opposition to the fuel removal bid.

Labour’s position, made available to NEWSMEN, yesterday, is that “once the Jonathan administration has openly admitted that it can not be trusted to effectively manage the funds that would accrue from the proceeds of the subsidy removal, the economy and government should be handed over to the eminent Nigerians”.

NLC acting General Secretary, Owei Lakemfa, who spoke on the position of government to get a body of eminent Nigerians to manage the funds, said “the position of the NLC is that government is not serious.

President Goodluck Jonathan
“If government is telling Nigerians that it cannot be trusted, that it can not effectively administer the funds when they are realized, then it had better hand over the reins of power to those eminent Nigerians.

“The NLC has not even said it is in agreement with such a proposal from government. Government’s position on the eminent Nigerians is premised on the assumption that we have agreed that the subsidy should be removed. I’m sorry, we have not agreed.

“What government is doing is not different from a farmer who is supposed to have the capacity to utilize his farm produce for production of a variety of foodstuffs but willfully sells all his farm produce and then goes to a five-star hotel to pay a five-star price for food and turns around to say the difference is subsidy.

“The first problem of this administration like the ones before it is that it sells 100% of our crude oil leaving nothing for local consumption and then it goes abroad to buy petroleum products at exorbitant prices; it then adds the cost of insurance and freight, adds the cost of discharging the products into smaller vessels as well as the cost of distributing the products to marketers and it calls that subsidy, when in fact if we refine crude oil in Nigeria, we stand to benefit much more because of the derivatives we would get”.

According to him, there are about 114 additives that can be derived from the local refining of crude oil.

Continuing, Lakemfa declared that Labour’s position is that for so long as some of the conditions in the agreement reached between the Federal Government and Labour are not met, then there should be no subsidy removal.

“Government is talking about deregulation which is import-based; a deregulation that is anchored on finished petroleum products rather than one that encourages local refining.

“In any case, this issue of eminent Nigerians is not new and it is just a throw-back to military mentality. During the days of Ibrahim Babangida, the Directorate of Foods, Roads and Rural Infrastructure, DFRRI, was established to manage the funds; during Sani Abacha’s era, it was the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF – these bodies were decreed into existence.
“What President Jonathan plans to do is create that body which is not known to Nigeria’s constitution and saddle it with the responsibility of administering funds meant for the consolidated accounts.

“NLC is not falling for that!
“Our fear is that all the conditions that led to the crises in the Arab world are present here in Nigeria, so anything can happen”.

Earlier, yesterday, speaking on the statement by Allison-Madueke, Petroleum Resources Minister, that the government was yet to take a decision on the subsidy removal, President of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, in a statement, advised Nigerians not to be hoodwinked by the government antics. Omar said the government antics and statements were calculated to mislead the international community and to lure Nigerians away from the on-going mobilization against “the anti-people policy”.

According to him, “The truth is that President Goodluck Jonathan in his letter to the National Assembly on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework of his administration stated categorically that the government has decided to remove fuel subsidy and that the take off date is January 2012. Also the president on his way to the Commonwealth Summit in Perth, Australia, to which the Petroleum Minister accompanied him, had told the country that fuel subsidy must be removed as the alternative is the collapse of the economy.

So Mrs. Allison-Madueke is not forthright on this matter and the NLC urges Nigerians not to relent in their patriotic mobilization to resist this policy that will further impoverish the
citizenry.”

Oshiomhole’s weapon against the PDP

As the July 14, 2012 governorship election approaches in Edo State, Governor Adams Oshiomhole will be testing his political might again with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His assumption of office as governor in 2008, after a protracted legal battle, has changed the politics of the state. Ahead of the election, Oshiomhole recently got the endorsement of the leadership of his party, the ACN, for second term and also that of chairmen of the party in the 18 local government councils of the state.

The revered Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, equally commended him for his developmental efforts and tacitly expressed his support for his second term ambition.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, visited the palace of the Oba of Benin, during which he solicited the support of the Oba towards the re-election of Oshiomhole. While responding, the monarch recalled:”The last time you were in my palace, it was with the governor (Adams Oshiomhole), who then was your president.

Since then, he (Oshiomhole) has gone on to what he is today, and he has transformed the state. The rest all of you can see. Labour has offered a lot in the past and I ask you to continue being good ambassadors of the people”. Apart from that occasion , Erediuwa has persistently commended the governor while urging ACN members to reciprocate the support Oshiomhole gave during their own elections by ensuring that he was voted back to office.

Though the PDP is strategizing on how to oust the governor from office, it seems he has been able to endear himself to the hearts of the people through his developmental strides across the three senatorial districts of the state. So far, some persons have indicated interest under the PDP to battle Oshiomhole in the guber election.

Amongst them is the former governor of the state, Prof.Osarhiemen Osunbor, who was ousted by the Appeal Court ruling. Others include the former Commander, Corps of Army Finance and Accounts of the Nigerian Army, Maj.Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, Prof.Julius Ihonbvere, Barr.Ken Imasuagbon and a presenter with the African Independent Television (AIT), Mr Jacob Idinye.

However, Oshiomhole’s popularity continued to grow in the wake of the construction of roads, hospitals, schools, beautification and other developmental projects which the PDP failed to achieve while in power in Edo. As a matter of fact, the PDP credibility problem took the upswing when the people saw that development was possible in the state after all.

It was not surprising, therefore, that the comrade governor bagged four awards within a space of three weeks recently. The awards include the Leadership Newspapers ‘Governor of the Year’ and Nigerian Union of Teachers’ (NUT) ‘Best Governor’s Award’ for his outstanding contributions to the development of the education sector as well as his commitment to enhancing the welfare of teachers.

He also won the Nigeria Social Enterprise Report and Awards (the SERAs-Nigeria CSR 2011 Awards) for his strides in education, healthcare and infrastructural development which constitute the core areas of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Etsako Club 81 Award of Excellence during the activities marking the 30th anniversary of the club. With awards such as these coming when the governor is celebrating his third year in office, come November 12, 2011, it is a clear declaration that he is battle ready for the 2012 poll.

While giving an insight into how he intends to defeat the PDP in the forthcoming poll when over one hundred members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) defected to the ACN, Oshiomhole declared: “ACN represents progressive movement because it is about service rather than sharing opportunities, it is about challenges and not sharing. The dream we all share is our state must be rebuilt and our people regain their pride of place. Thank you for reinforcing our strength and the 2012 politics will be defined by issues and development.

People will vote on the basis of what they have seen and know and we will remind them of those who destroyed our dream”. He added: “ACN is a political movement for change and sustainable development. As members from one of the oldest parties in the state, join us to redefine politics and governance in our state. You have taken the right decision and we assure that you will not regret”.

The governor disclosed that his government “is determined to remain focused and play politics of development in which the people come first, second and third as against the regime when the godfather come first, second and third and when the godfather gets richer and the people get poorer”. Oshiomhole’s camp was also boosted with the entry of Henry Idahagbon, a former member of the National Executive Council of the PDP; and the former Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Nosa Adams, and their supporters into the ACN.

However, the issue of who becomes the governor’s running mate has been a subject of controversy as some leaders of the ACN, led by the South South Vice-Chairman, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, have kicked against any move to pick the current deputy governor, Dr Pius Odubu. That is why despite all the endorsements of the governor, his deputy has failed to receive the support of the leaders, which is an indication that Oshiomhole may source for another deputy.

And tactically, the governor has remained neutral in the factional war between loyalists of the deputy governor and those of Ize-Iyamu. newsmen gathered that he displayed his neutrality during a recent meeting with national and state assemblies members, when two lawmakers at the meeting openly described the rancor as regards the deputy governorship issue as unnecessary and urged Oshiomhole to pick the incumbent since he and Odubu have enjoyed a cordial relationship.

It was however learnt that the governor became furious and asked the lawmakers to stop causing confusion in the party since the reason for the meeting had nothing do with the issue of deputy governorship. He urged them to stay off the matter and allow the leadership of the party to make the decision at the appropriate time. However, while appreciating the awards bestowed on him by Etsako Club 81, Oshiomhole said: “This honor has shown that a prophet can be honored by his own people. I appreciate the honor by your award.

In 2003, I was given an award obviously for causing so much trouble for the government of the day and I told my wife (late Clara) that should I ever do it and arrested, tell them the people encouraged me to do so and I am being awarded by that. I am humbled at our modest contributions to the development of Edo State including Etsako land. That prophets are not appreciated at home is no longer true. I like to dedicate this award to my late wife whose support is unquantifiable.

I like to remember her on this occasion for her commitment and encouragement. I also want to dedicate this award to the very ordinary people; men and women across the three senatorial districts because they voted for me not on the account of my place of birth but because of my antecedents at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Many people emphasize the infrastructural developments in the state by this administration but, to me, the most achievement is the restoration of the peoples’ confidence that only them alone can entrench genuine democracy; One Man, One Vote. And that the son of a cassava farmer can rise to become anything that God has destined him to be.”

He added: “My story in government is that only God can determine the life and success of a man not any godfather. When a society runs a system where only one man decides if vacancy exists or not, that society cannot grow. Development cannot occur by miracle but in the realm of entrenching One man, One Vote. Without the fear of the electorate, good governance is impossible”.

Also in a paper entitled, “2011 elections: A post mortem”, at his investiture as the ‘Governor of the Year’ by the Leadership Newspapers, Oshiomhole appreciated the newspaper group for the award which he noted would further spur him to do more for the society. The governor, who took the audience through the nation’s democratic journey since 1999, insisted that only credible polls can guarantee the future of the country.

While acknowledging that the 2011 elections were not perfect, he, however, submitted that the exercise recorded a substantial improvement over those of 2007. To sustain democracy, Oshiomhole posited that key players must be mindful of their utterances, while there is need for the overhauling of the Independent National Electoral Commission to make it a truly unbiased umpire.

Revealed! Why National Assembly is After Farida Waziri

In recent times, especially in the last two weeks, secret meetings and open deliberations have been held all in a bid to either put the Chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, in check or secure her removal from office and bring in a retired (and tired) Justice of the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal.

In fact, the plot to oust Mrs. Waziri from office became more intense after she honoured the invitation of members of Political Platform crew on RayPower FM recently where she made certain comments and allegations seen as derogatory to many politicians (especially some former Governors and serving Lawmakers).

From all indications, serious plots are underway in the seat of power to make the EFCC less effective by giving it what political commentators have described as the 'ICPC treatment'. Continue to find out 'Why National Assembly is Moving Against Farida Waziri'...
Strong indications have emerged that the failure of the National Assembly leadership to stave off the on-going alleged corruption trial of 13 of its members is the real reason the lawmakers have commenced legislative move to ease out the commission’s boss, Mrs. Farida Waziri.

A source revealed that pressure was mounted on Mrs. Waziri, a retired AIG, to stop the prosecution of the senators and members of the House of Representatives currently on trial for alleged corruption. To the chagrin of those assigned to lobby her, Mrs. Farida did not only snub them but went ahead to endorse the arraignment of those indicted.

The federal lawmakers, through a bill sponsored by a member of the lower House, Mr Bassey Ewa, are now in the process of amending the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Act as regards the headship, which would see only serving or retired jurists at the level of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal appointed as the agency’s chairman.

This move reminds one of the last days of the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, when the constitution of the ruling PDP was hurriedly amended to prevent anyone from contesting the position of BOT chairman with the then out-going president.

If the proposed amendment, which has already scaled Second Reading in the House of Reps sails through, Mrs. Farida, who is a retired police officer, would no longer be qualified to head the EFCC. But Nigerians have quickly identified the antics of the lawmakers and are speaking up on the issue.

One group that is leading the pack is the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP). In a statement in Abuja, the body noted that dissipating energy on the headship of EFCC, rather than strengthen relevant framework that would support the fight against corruption, smacked of a hidden agenda by the lawmakers.

The move for the amendment of the commission’s Act to exclude all former security officers from being appointed as chairman of the anti-graft agency commenced last Wednesday, with Ewa claiming that, “the EFCC has become a political tool against perceived enemies.”

CNPP, however, faulted the argument, saying that there was no proof that a retired justice would perform better than ex-officers. It also stated that what the lawmakers should support was the establishment of a special court and not the status of who would head the agency.

It added that the provision of a special court for cases of corruption would no doubt assist in getting quick dispensation of justice and save the already crowded regular courts some stress... Lets hope the Lawmakers will listen to the voice of reason and drop this very unpopular bill?

A study conducted in the state few weeks back even indicated that millions of people living in Lagos are mentally unstable.

Segun Bakare, 28, has been arrested and charged to the Ijeshatedo Magistrate court in Lagos for killing his mother, Mrs. Kudirat Bakare. He was alleged to have used a rope to strangle her while she was asleep. The late Kudirat, according to eye witnesses, struggled to save her life but the wicked Segun ensured that she died by using a broken bottle to stab her.

The sad incident took place at No. 3 Musa Street, Mushin, Lagos. The circumstance that led Segun to murder Kudirat is one that could be said to be very trivial. Neighbours said he Segun had a quarrel with his mom and moved out of their family house. Only for him to return while the woman was asleep and tied her neck with a rope, strangled her, broke a bottle and stabbed her all over her body.

She bled profusely and died before neighbours could rush her to hospital. Immediately Segun discovered that she’s dead, he tried to escape but was overpowered and held by neighbours who in turn handed him to the police. The offence he committed, according to the police, was contrary to section 319 of the criminal code cap 38, vol. 2 laws of Lagos state of Nigeria 2004.

When the matter came up at the court, the prosecutor, Inspector Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the crime was a capital offence and would require the attention of the state’s DPP. Consequently, the presiding magistrate, Mrs. D. T. Olalokun, ordered that Segun be remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Lagos, pending the DPP’s advice... May God save our women (and mothers) from violent men!

Macarena Lemos, a young model, claims the player's parent threatened her in the electronics department but insists she has never done anything to tarnish the name of her old flame

Macarena Lemos, a 20-year-old model from Rosario who briefly dated Messi when she was 14 and he 18, says she was out shopping with her mother and her aunt when she noticed the player's parent was following her and taking photographs.

"She was following me and taking photos until I turned around and asked her what was going on," the model explained on Telenoche.

"That's when she started insulting me. What was she doing there in the electronics section, with a frying pan in her hand? She was following me with a telephone and a frying pan."

Lemos was bemused by the actions of Mrs Messi, claiming she has never gone on record with any details of their relationship.

"I have never came out and said whether I had slept with her son. I was 14 and he was 18 - and I didn't reveal anything about our relationship," she added.

"She treated me like I was nothing, as if I were hanging from her son's ribs. She seems to think I said something to a magazine, but I never did. They are confused.

Police Kill Seven Alleged Kidnappers In Akwa Ibom

Investigations indicate that the suspected kidnappers were executed by the police in cold blood, raising concerns about the legal powers of the police to act as investigators, prosecutors, judges and implementers of judgments.

But a police informant told our correspondent that, contrary to the official police version, the suspects were assembled from different locations and executed in Eket Police Division.

“It is shocking and cruel that the police would execute people without properly handing them over for prosecution, and then create a mindless exhibition of their bodies,” said a human rights lawyer in Akwa Ibom.

He added that, unless citizens recognized the dangers of such jungle justice, the police could easily kill innocent people by tagging them kidnappers.
SaharaReporters could not reach Onyeka Orji, the police spokesman in Akwa Ibom, for comments. We made several calls to his cell phone, but he never responded.

The Eket area has been plagued by kidnap and robbery activities in recent times. Over the weekend, a security team freed two captains of vessels at the Qua Iboe oil fields.
Our correspondent spoke to numerous members of the public who came out to view the bodies of the alleged kidnappers.

Some of the witnesses applauded the police for smashing the kidnap syndicate which had terrorized the area, but others condemned the act of executing suspected criminals and lying that they died in a cross-fire. “The state should have prosecuted them since the law recommends death sentence for kidnapping,” said one of the witnesses.

A South Carolina mother who told police her son killed three family members and himself has been charged with murdering all of them to get their life insurance money, police said on Tuesday.

Susan Hendricks, 48, was charged with the murder of her two sons, her ex-husband and her stepmother after being arrested at a motel on Monday night, police added.

She was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, a handgun she kept in her night stand.

Police were called to a house in Liberty, South Carolina, on Oct. 14, Pickens County Assistant Sheriff Tim Morgan said.

Based on observations at the scene, forensic evidence and interviews with family members, police determined Hendricks’ version of what happened was false, he said.

Family members told police her motive was life insurance money.

Hendricks was the beneficiary of multiple life insurance policies taken out by the victims, a police report said.

Gaddafi Killers Will Be Put On Trial Says NTC

Libya's ruling National Transitional Council has said it will put the killers of deposed dictator Muammar Gaddafi on trial.

NTC vice chairman Abdel Hafiz Ghoga said: "With regards to Gaddafi, we do not wait for anybody to tell us.
"We had already launched an investigation. We have issued a code of ethics in handling of prisoners of war.
"I am sure that was an individual act and not an act of revolutionaries or the national army. Whoever is responsible for that (the killing) will be judged and given a fair trial."
Sky News has retraced Gaddafi's final movements in his home town of Sirte, establishing that he moved house to house before being finally captured.
He tried to escape in a convoy but a Nato airstrike stopped the string of vehicles in their tracks and the former leader was forced to take refuge in a storm drain.

Gaddafi was hauled out by fighters but there is confusion about exactly what happened next leading to his death.
Video footage showed the former dictator bleeding heavily but still alive as he was pulled onto the back of a truck.
He later died from a bullet to the head and also sustained gunshot wounds to his stomach, according to the post-mortem report.
The NTC had suggested he was killed in crossfire as loyalists fought with anti-Gaddafi troops after the leader's capture.
But the announcement of a potential trial suggests a change of position as they contemplate whether he was unlawfully killed.

The move came after footage published by the Global Post in the US suggested Gaddafi had been sodomised before he died.
The video shows Gaddafi being dragged from his hiding place, bleeding from his head, arm and other injuries.
It then appears to show one of the fighters using a pole or knife to assault him before he is dragged onto the back of a truck.
The moment of his actual death has not yet emerged but videos have also shown him with a gun to his head.
Mystery also surrounds the death of his son Mutassim who was pictured drinking water and smoking while in captivity before he too was killed.
Amid the questions about Gaddafi's demise, the UN Security Council has ended its mandate for the NATO military operation in Libya that has lasted seven months.
The 15-nation council unanimously approved a resolution which had allowed foreign forces to use "all necessary measures" to protect civilians.
It means UN authorisation for foreign military operations in the country will now formally end at 11.59pm local Libyan time on October 31.
Meanwhile, there are fears weapons used by Libyan loyalists could end up in the hands of terrorists.
And the hunt is still on for another of Gaddafi's sons, Saif al Islam, who is still at large.
A senior NTC spokesman said he had crossed to the Niger side of the Libyan border.
Saif was charged, along with his father and Libya's ex-intelligence chief, with crimes against humanity for the bombing and shooting of civilian protesters in February.
A source within the NTC earlier said he wanted to turn himself in to face the International Criminal Court.
