Anorexic cover girl model, 19, dies in her sleep after weight drops to just six stone

An anorexic teenage covergirl died of heart failure in her sleep after her weight dropped to just six stone. Bethaney Wallace, 19, appeared to be living a dream lifestyle, appearing on the covers of glossy magazines including Girl Talk and Popgirl from the age of 12. But despite her stunning good looks she never believed she was attractive enough and succumbed to anorexia and bulimia aged 16.

The illnesses left her too weak to work and she was forced to step away from modelling.Over recent months she had shown signs of finally getting on top of the devastating condition by cooking for herself and had even put together a new modelling portfolio. But on April 18, she tragically passed away in her sleep while she was staying at her grandmother's house.

Her devastated parents Clive, 47, and Cathy, 42, yesterday said there were indications Bethaney's weakened heart had failed as she slept. They believe her anorexia developed as she struggled to keep off weight she lost during a bout of glandular fever. Mr Wallace, a roof tiler, said: 'We found it difficult to get help for her until she was willing to do it.

There needs to be information out there for parents so they know what warning signs to look out for. 'When she was 16 food became a problem. She would go to the supermarket with us and stare at the food. But she would not sit at the dinner table with us.

Suicide bomber assails Police boss convoy, kills 11

A suicide attack targeting a senior police official’s convoy on Monday has killed 11 people and wounded 20, a rescue source said, with the senior officer said to be unharmed. Police said the attack in the Taraba state capital Jalingo saw a motorcycle ram into the police convoy amid a wave of similar violence attributed to Islamist group Boko Haram.

Authorities provided an official death toll of three people, including two passers-by and the bomber, with a police motorcyclist wounded. However, the rescue official put the death toll at 11, including a policeman, with 20 wounded. “Eleven people died,” the rescue official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the press. “One policeman was among them.

There are 20 injured.” In describing the attack, police spokesman Ibiang Mbaseki said “a bomber on a motorcycle rammed into the police rider (motorcycle escort). The bomb went off. The windshield of the (state) police commissioner’s car was shattered.” There was no immediate claim of responsibility and police declined to name any suspects, though the attack was similar to others carried out by Islamist group Boko Haram.

“For now, we are not mentioning anybody as suspects,” said Mbaseki. “An investigation will be carried out to determine who was responsible.” Taraba state has not been known to be targeted by Boko Haram, though the state borders others that have been repeatedly hit by such violence. The alleged mastermind of a Christmas day attack on a church near the capital Abuja which killed at least 44 people was re-arrested in Taraba state in February after having earlier escaped from custody.

Speaking at the opening of a summit of the six-nation Lake Chad Basin Commission in Libreville, Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno called for the creation a joint regional force to battle the spread of Boko Haram. “I am demanding the creation of a joint deterrence force. We have to make this decision here today,” he said. “Our basin is exposed to insecurity because of the permanent threat posed by Boko Haram.” Officials and experts have repeatedly warned that Boko Haram may be building ties with Al-Qaeda and expanding beyond Nigeria’s borders to threaten the entire region.

Nigeria has been hit by near daily gun-and-bomb attacks, mainly in the country’s north, that have shaken Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer. On Sunday, attacks on churchgoers in the northern cities of Kano and Maiduguri left a total of 23 people dead, security sources and an NGO have said. Also Sunday, unknown gunmen shot dead three policemen on patrol in an ambush in northern Katsina state, a police spokesman said Monday. Taraba is located along the eastern-central border. Boko Haram’s increasingly bloody insurgency has claimed more than 1,000 lives since mid-2009.

Police and soldiers have often been the victims, but Christian worshippers have also been targeted. The group also claimed responsibility for a suicide attack at UN headquarters in Abuja which killed at least 25 people last August. Boko Haram initially claimed to be fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in Nigeria’s north, but its demands and structure have become less clear in recent months. It is believed to have a number of factions, some with political motives, as well as a hardcore Islamist wing. Criminal groups are also believed to have carried out violence under the guise of Boko Haram.

'He should have been the one helping me, but he was the one abusing me': Girl, 15, raped by father

A daughter forced to act as her father's 'wife' has waived her right to anonymity to help other abuse victims. Emma Frost, 22, was left devastated after suffering a decade of s*xual abuse at the hands of her father.

Now, after seeing him jailed for life, she is taking the brave step of sharing her story in the hopes she can help others who have suffered a similar plight. Emma, from Clacton, Ess*x, says:

'I stayed silent for years because I thought nobody would believe me. 'Your parent is the person you are supposed to turn to for help, but he was the one abusing me. I felt trapped and it tore me apart.'
Christopher Frost, 45, began abusing his daughter when she was nine years old. 'I remember the first time I was watching TV in the lounge when he came in and sat next to me for a cuddle.

But he had a towel in his hand and draped it across our laps. Afterwards her dad told her that was a 'special cuddle' - something that would go on to happen more and more frequently over the next few years.

'I knew it was wrong and I hated it, but I didn't feel able to tell anyone so instead I started releasing my anger by playing up at school.' Eventually unable to cope with her worsening behaviour, her mum put her into care in 2001 weeks before she turned 12.

Woman Kills Man By Squeezing His Testicles In Street Fight over Parking Space

There are worse ways to die, but you probably don’t want to think about them, especially if you’re a guy. A Chinese man was reportedly killed last week when a woman squeezed his testicles until he collapsed during a fight over a parking space.

An unidentified 41-year-old woman in China’s Haiku City in the Hainan Province rode into town on her scooter to pick her child up from school. The woman tried to park in front of a local store, but the store owner, the 42-year-old victim, refused to allow it, China News 24 reported.

The resulting fight escalated, leading the woman to call her husband and brother, who in turn got into a more violent fist fight with the shopkeeper, according to the website. At some point in the fracas, the woman grabbed the man’s testicles and squeezed them until he collapsed. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and later died.

Parking disputes can get ugly just about anywhere. On March 26, Louisiana resident Shawntay Brown, 19, was arrested for biting a 15-year-old’s br*ast during a brawl in Monroe.

An affidavit in the case included a police officer’s statement that the 15 year old “showed me the bite mark.” A video is said to show Brown running after the younger girl and biting her on a tender spot, the Smoking Gun reported. Brown contends that the other girl bit her first.

Court jails monarch for marrying subject’s wife

CUSTODIANS of the law who turn to breach it may not always go free as an upper Area High Court sitting in Buruku, Benue State and presided over by Acting Sole Judge, Mrs. Kpadoo Chia, has sentenced the District Head of Mbalaagh in Buruku Local Council Area, Zaki Toryila Nyitse, to three months’ imprisonment for marrying another man’s wife.

The judge also fined Nyitse N20,000, failure of which he will also go to prison for 12 months. Delivering judgment in the case filed by one Tortiv Torkula against the accused person, the judge held that there was enough evidence to prove that the district head knew that the woman he married was already married to someone else, with four children. The judge said the punishment was to serve as deterrent to the convict who is a custodian and stakeholder of the Tiv culture.

She held that there was actually evidence that the said woman had four children for the complainant, stating that the story by the accused that he was the first husband of the lady was not true. The judge maintained that the law must continue to catch up with those who disrupt family life by deliberately putting injury on such a person, stressing that if people were allowed to marry in that way, there would be no law in society

Azazi, PDP face-off national embarrassment

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday said the face-off between the National Security Adviser (NSA), General Andrew Azazi, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the cause of Boko Haram crisis is a national embarrassment. National publicity secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said yesterday in a statement that “we have said it several times that the PDP and the government it controls at the centre are clueless, confused and totally incapable of piloting the affairs of this nation.

Is there any better evidence of this cluelessness than what Nigerians are witnessing now? “It does not matter how much the President tries to engage in damage control over the statement credited to his NSA, or the ever-so knee-jerk and poorly-thought-out reaction of the sinking behemoth called the PDP, the reality is that the NSA’s shocking comments reflect the thinking in the highest echelon of the Jonathan administration, that the crooked politics of the PDP is behind the Boko Haram crisis, and that it has escalated because a son of the South-South is sitting in Aso Rock.”

The opposition party said that “with this pedestrian analysis of the crisis that predates the Jonathan administration (Boko Haram leader was killed extra-judicially during the Yar’adua years, triggering a wave of revenge attacks that have now escalated), is it any wonder that the PDP federal government has been shooting the breeze, so to say, in trying to tackle the crisis? Can a disease that can’t be correctly diagnosed be managed or cured?”

How the gunmen escaped

The suspected Boko Haram members that attacked Bayero University Kano (BUK) old campus escaped through the Mango gate that opens to Dorayi Road which is normally closed at weekend. After the attack they fled southwards towards the gate shooting sporadically in the air as they rode on five motorcycles. An eye witness told our reporter that after destroying the pad lock on the gate with a gunshot they escaped.

The witness said: “I saw them coming towards the gate on their motorbikes shooting in the air to scare people away from them. I advised the security by the gate to remove his uniform so that he would not be attacked. They then escaped by climbing the fence to the other side of the road.” Daily Trust further learnt that after the operation, the gunmen while trying to escape shot at people they met on the way to the Mango gate leaving them with various degrees of injuries.

Some of the victims that sustained minor injuries were treated at the university clinic while those with serious injuries were taken to Aminu Kano as discovered. Some people were at the clinic looking for their loved ones. The university environment was very quiet as people remained indoors following the order by the JTF that movements were not allowed inside the campus, according to some security men on the campus.

However, movement along the Dorayi Road through which the gunmen escaped was normal despite the incident. Both commercial and private vehicles were seen going freely even as soldiers patrolled the area.

20 Ekiti varsity students caught with fake exam permits

No fewer than 20 part- time students of Ekiti State University, EKSU, were, Friday, caught with with fake examination clearance papers during the ongoing first semester examination. The development led to the suspension of the examination on the ground of alleged failure of the students to.pay their school fees.

According to the Director of Part-Time Programme, Professor Edward Ogunleye, the alleged culprits were caught during the screening of students who have paid their fees. In a desperate bid to partake in the examination, some students forged exam permits which they smuggled to the hall.

Having found out that a lot of the students were yet to pay their fees, the management of the university decided to stop those who were yet to pay their fees from sitting for the exam.

This led to a violent protest by the students and the destruction of some property by the part-time students. Subsequently, the examination has been suspended indefinitely by the school authorities to prevent breaking down of laws and order r

NUPENG threatens strike over insecurity and corruption

NIGERIAN Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has asked the Federal Government to urgently address the increasing rate of insecurity and corruption in the oil and gas sector, or else its members will ground the economy by withdrawing their services nationwide. The union, while condemning the recent bomb attacks in the country, especially the attack on the offices of ThisDay in Abuja, Daily Sun, The Moment and ThisDay in Kaduna, stressed that the Federal Government must rise up to the challenges by extending its security equipment to all the media houses in the country.

NUPENG’s president, Comrade Achese Igwe, said this while addressing newsmen on how the high rate of kidnapping, insecurity and corruption in the oil and gas industry had affected the nation’s economy in the last two decades. Igwe said: “We challenge the Federal Government to urgently address the increasing rate of insecurity and corruption in the oil and gas sector, else our union will have no other option but to call our members to withdraw their services.

While we insist that the high rate of insecurity to life and property in the country, especially in Niger Delta, is affecting the nation’s economy, we, therefore, warn that if the trend of kidnapping in Niger Delta goes unchecked, we will take action in our own way, because we find it difficult to understand why the state governments in the region and security agencies fail to check the criminals.” Noting that the House of Representative’s probe panel on fuel subsidy did not take pain to visit the depots, refineries, Central Bank and other agencies to get more information and verify and access claims by these agencies on the alleged fraud committed, the labour leader said

“NUPENG was vehement in the condemnation of the use of briefcase carriers as allotees to the importation of petroleum products. And we make bold to say that the probe panel report has vindicated us on our past criticism raised against the fuel subsidy management.” The labour leader maintained that the union in strong term “condemns the high-level of corruption and rot in the system and, therefore, called on the executive arm of government not to bury the report, but to conduct a thorough investigation without witchhunting anybody.”

On the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), the NUPENG’s president said “we are disappointed that PIB is yet to be re-tabled before the National Assembly by the committee set up to review all the versions, and so, we are at a loss on the authentic version of the bill.” “While we are not comfortable with the committee set up by the Federal Government to fine-tune the report for presentation to the National Assembly, as it is conducting its affairs in secrecy, we call for a stakeholders’ meeting in order to iron out the grey areas,” he added.

A dentist pulled out all her ex-boyfriend’s teeth after he dumped her for another woman – who has now left him because he is toothless. Anna Mackowiak, 34, is facing jail after taking her revenge on 45-year-old Marek Olszewski when he turned up at her surgery with toothache just days after breaking up with her.

She gave him a heavy dose of anaesthetic and plucked his teeth out. She then wrapped his head and jaw in a bandage to stop him opening his mouth and said there had been complications and he would need to see a specialist. Oh my days! Seems like a movie, huh? Lol. Continue... The dentist, who works in Wroclaw, Poland, said: ‘I tried to be professional and detach myself from my emotions.

'But when I saw him lying there I just thought, "What a b******".' Mr Olszewski said: 'I knew something was wrong because when I woke up I couldn’t feel any teeth and my jaw was strapped up with bandages. 'She told me my mouth was numb and I wouldn’t be able to feel anything for a while and that the bandage was there to protect the gums, but that I would need to see a specialist. I didn’t have any reason to doubt her, I mean I thought she was a professional 'But when I got home I looked in the mirror and couldn’t f****** believe it. The b**** had emptied my mouth.
'The new girlfriend has now left me saying she can’t be with a man without teeth. And I’m going to have to pay a fortune on getting indents or something.’ Mackowiak is being investigated for medical malpractice and abusing the trust of a patient. She could face three years in jail.

Auto crash: They were after my life – Oshiomhole

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, yesterday, said weekend’s accident involving his convoy, in which three journalists lost their lives, was an attempt on his life, as the tipper driver rammed into his official vehicle, while the car he personally drove, escaped by the whiskers. Oshiomhole, who spoke on the accident at Government House, Benin City, lamented that it took him and other survivors close to 40 minutes to remove the journalists from their mangled bus.

Meanwhile, a crack team of detectives is investigating the ghastly motor accident, in which three journalist lost their lives on the Warrake-Auchi Road, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state. Olatunji Jacob and George Okosun, both of Independent Television, ITV, and Fidelis Ohani camera man attached to African Independent Television, AIT and a driver attached to the state Government House, Samson Inobemhe, lost their lives. Oshiomhole, yesterday, said: “I wept when I saw the way the journalists were trapped.” He condoled with the Nigeria Union of Journalists,NUJ, on the loss of its members.

He said he had been receiving messages that officials of his government were targets of assassination and kidnap before the tragic incident. “If I was in the regular jeep (my official car), the guy would have hit me. I was in a small car which I decided to drive myself. The tipper pushed that jeep off the road and then crashed into the bus conveying the journalists. “It is a straight road, so if he lost control, he would have swerved into the bush. When I asked the motor boy yesterday (Sunday) where the driver was, he said he opened the door of the vehicle and fled. He claimed the driver just said he should follow him.

I then asked him if he was not under 18 and why follow a man to another local government area without asking questions. “Well, we have asked the State Security Service, SSS and the police to investigate the accident, but before we knew it, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was already issuing condolence message. I haven’t cried for a long time but when I saw the ITV man (George Okosun) and then the AIT man (Fidelis Ohane), I wept.

From the time of my campaign in 2006, they had followed me all the way through the judicial process until now and they all have families, young families. We well get to the root of the matter. “The truck hit them head on and smashed the bus. To open it, they had to use axe to cut the bus. You saw people bleeding but you couldn’t get them out; some, we had to loosen the bolts of the seat to remove them. For about 40 minutes, we were trying to get them out but God took control.” Meanwhile, at press time, the Chief Detail to the governor and other security operatives, in the convoy were also receiving treatment at the intensive unit of the Benin Central Hospital.

Vanguard learnt that the crack team of detectives, including officers drawn from the State Security Services, SSS, have commenced investigation into the accident in order to ascertain whether it was a planned attempt on the governor’s life. A top security officer, who craved anonymity, told Vanguard: “We are worried because the governor was not in his usual car but was in a BMW Station Wagon in front of the convoy while his usual vehicle was right behind the BMW.

So the report was that the tipper rammed into the convoy hitting what was supposed to be the governor’s usual vehicle. “It meant that something could have happened to the governor, if he was in his usual car.” ….As Edo Pdp, Nma commiserate with Oshiomhole BY GABRIEL ENOGHOLASE BENIN—Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Edo State chapter, yesterday, commiserated with Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the people of the state on the death of three journalists in a ghastly road accident, involving the governor’s convoy, weekend.

PDP wished speedy recovery for those who sustained injuries in the accident and prayed God to grant the departed souls eternal rest and their families, the fortitude to bear the painful loss. The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Edo State branch, also commiserated with NUJ over the unfortunate accident.

Egypt ruling military to reshuffle nation's unpopular Cabinet

Egypt’s ruling military leader vowed Sunday he would reshuffle the nation’s unpopular Cabinet, according to state media, in a move seen as an attempt to calm growing anger in the Islamist-controlled Parliament ahead of next month’s presidential elections. The decision by Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi came hours after Parliament, nearly half of which is controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, threatened to suspend legislative sessions for a week to protest Prime Minister Kamal Ganzouri’s government.

Parliament has been critical of the military-backed regime for months, but the generals have indicated they would not tolerate a no-confidence vote. Egyptian media, quoting members of Parliament, reported the Cabinet would undergo a limited restructuring in coming days to include officials from the country’s dominant political forces.

The Ganzouri government is widely mistrusted and viewed as a throwback to deposed President Hosni Mubarak’s rule. Speaker of Parliament Saad Katatni said Tantawi phoned him to say that changes would be made to the government. Katatni characterized the call as restoring Parliament’s “dignity.” Tantawi made no immediate comment. The conflict over the Cabinet is unfolding as the military and the Muslim Brotherhood are seeking to protect and expand their powers before the May 23-24 presidential vote.

The two sides had cooperated for months but relations have soured as Parliament has been viewed as a shadow entity against the more powerful army. Tantawi’s promise appears to give the legislature -- and the Brotherhood -- a degree of the legitimacy they crave. The military’s choice of Ganzouri, a prime minister under Mubarak, was opposed by activists and protesters in November. The Brotherhood also criticized the selection but, at the time, was concentrating its efforts on campaigning for parliamentary elections.

After winning the legislature, Islamists stepped up their attacks on the government, which they blamed for being a tool of the military and stifling Parliament. “Ganzouri should act politically and listen to the parliament and not act with stubbornness and arrogance,” said Sobhi Saleh, a member of parliament with the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party. “If I was in his place, I'd have at least changed five or six ministers to absorb the Parliament's anger." Another legislator, Mohamed Anwar Sadat, said: “Life between the Cabinet and the Parliament is impossible this way.”

Fear of HIV scourge seizes Kano as 44 ‘prostitutes’ test positive

A report by Hisbah officials (the Sharia police) indicating that 44 out of 93commercial s*x workers arrested last Sunday at Kwanar Gafan are infected with deadly HIV/AIDS, is eliciting fears of massive spread of the scourge in the area –not only among clients but among innocent housewives across Kano state.

If a single market could harbour as much as 44 HIV infected ‘prostitutes’, how many unsuspecting clients could have contracted the virus from the victims? What factors could have been responsible for the convergence of prostitutes at the Kwanan Gafan market? What would be the fate of innocent housewives who might have contracted the disease through unfaithful partners? What steps would the state government take to checkmate further spread of the scourge to other parts of the state? These questions and others have been befuddling the minds of residents in the wake of the Hisbah report.

The Kwanar Gafan market which deals mostly in tomato business is believed to be drawing people from all parts of Nigeria and neighbouring countries like Niger, Cameroon and Chad Republics. Investigations by Weekly Trust revealed that the s*x hawkers usually assemble at the market about two or three weeks before the seasonal business activities commenced.

“The state Ministry of Health has been actively working with the Federal Ministry of Health and other partners to ensure that the HIV scourge is adequately addressed and brought under control. The HIV status in Kano during the last survey was 4.4 percent which is quite low when compared with that of other states

A pastor who said he was conducting service in one of the theatres when the blasts went off, disclosed that it occurred about 30 metres away from where he stood.

He said what scarred him most was the gunshots that followed the bombing. He also stated that there were casualties but could not give exact figures... We are trying to get more details from persons in Kano at this time.

20 killed at Bayero University church services attack

Attackers armed with bombs and guns opened fire at church services at a university on Sunday, killing around 20 people as worshippers tried to flee, witnesses and officials said. Explosions and gunfire rocked Bayero University in the northern city of Kano, with witnesses reporting that two church services were targeted as they were being held on campus.

One of the services was being held outdoors, while the second was inside a building, but with an overflow audience outside, witnesses said. Officials were unable to confirm casualty figures, but an AFP correspondent counted six bullet-riddled bodies near one of the two sites. At least another dozen bodies could be seen on a roadside by the university, but the exact number was unclear. Musical instruments and half-eaten meals could be seen at the site of one of the services. An army spokesman confirmed the attack but could not provide a casualty toll. Lieutenant Iweha Ikedichi told AFP that it appeared the attackers used bombs and gunfire in the assault.

Witnesses said the attackers arrived in a car and two motorcycles, opening fire and throwing homemade bombs, causing a stampede. They said worshippers were gunned down as they sought to flee. “They first attacked the open-air service outside the faculty of medicine,” one witness said. “They threw in explosives and fired shots, causing a stampede among worshippers. They now pursued them, shooting them with guns. … They also attacked another service at the sporting complex.”

A witness who said he was at the sporting complex at the time of the attack reported hearing gunshots outside while they were praying. “Then there was pandemonium,” he said, adding that he later saw two men outside shooting indiscriminately. A crowd of people later gathered at a Kano hospital waiting to hear news about friends or family. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although the attack was similar to others carried out by the Islamist group Boko Haram.

Boko Haram claimed January 20 attacks in Kano, the largest city in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, when coordinated bombings and shootings left at least 185 dead in the extremists’ deadliest attack yet. On Thursday, bomb attacks at the offices of the ThisDay newspaper in the capital Abuja and the northern city of Kaduna left at least nine people dead. The group has previously targeted churches, including on Christmas day when at least 44 people were killed in a bombing at a church outside Abuja.

A bombing on Easter Sunday in Kaduna near a church that killed at least 41 people was a stark reminder of the Christmas attacks, but Boko Haram is not known to have claimed it. Boko Haram’s increasingly bloody insurgency has claimed more than 1,000 lives since mid-2009. Police and soldiers have often been the victims of such attacks, although Christians have been targeted as well. It also claimed responsibility for an August suicide attack at UN headquarters in Abuja which killed at least 25 people.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south. Boko Haram initially claimed to be fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in Nigeria’s north, but its demands and structure have become less clear in recent months. It is believed to have a number of factions, including those with political motives as well as a hard-core Islamist wing. Criminal groups are also believed to have carried out violence under the guise of Boko Haram.

An attempt at indirect dialogue between the group and the government in March collapsed, with a mediator quitting over leaks to the media and a spokesman for the Islamists saying they could not trust the government. President Goodluck Jonathan, during a visit Saturday to the newspaper offices in Abuja hit by Thursday’s suicide attack, did not answer directly when asked whether dialogue was necessary to stop the violence. “You may dialogue, you may not dialogue depending on the circumstances,” Jonathan told reporters, adding: “But we will exploit every means possible to bring this to an end.”

A 34-YEAR-OLD PETTY TRADER, Sharifatu Yakubu, a resident of Techiman Tanoso in the Brong Ahafo Region, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour for stealing, contrary to section 93 of Act 29/60 of the Criminal Code. Sharifatu, who pleaded guilty to stealing a five-year-old school girl, was convicted and sentenced by a Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Mrs. Rita Agyeman-Budu.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector P. Y. Bebli told the court that on April 21, 2012, around 8am, one of the complainants, Victoria Tawiah, gave the victim and her siblings money to buy food in front of their house while she left for her usual hawking. According to Chief Inspector Bebli, Victoria returned in the evening to her house at Akwatia Line, a suburb of Kumasi, only to realize the victim was missing.

Victoria then informed her husband, who resides at Bantama, a suburb of Kumasi, about the incident and later reported the case to the Zongo Police Station. The police gave the complainants extracts to a local radio station so an announcement would be made about the missing child. Later, the parents of the victim were informed that a local radio station in Kumasi had announced that the missing child had been found at Techiman Tanoso where they proceeded for the child.

He said Sharifatu was arrested and later arraigned. The complainant told DAILY GUIDE after the court ruling that Sharifatu took the victim from their vicinity sent her to Techiman Tanoso. He narrated that the convict took the girl to her room and tried to make some tribal marks on her cheeks. He said after making a mark on one cheek, Sharifatu turned her attention to the other with the sharp implement but the girl made a sudden movement which resulted in a deep cut on the cheek with blood oozing out.

The little girl then ran out of the room in an attempt to escape. The complainant said luck eluded Sharifatu as residents in the area became suspicious when she tried to recapture the girl. She was arrested and sent to the Techiman Tanoso Police Station. He said at the police station, the five-year-old girl refuted every information that the convict gave to the police about her background and even went further to give more information of herself including her school, parents’ name and residence that the convict had no idea of. Man, wife, 2-yr -old baby roasted in midnight fire

Never in the wildest imagination could Peter Opara had envisaged the tragedy that befell him and members of his family last Sunday. The father of one, who occupied a one-room apartment at 9 Ogundade Street, Ejigbo area of Lagos, returned earlier that day from church with his family. After taking their evening meal of boiled rice and stew, the family, as gathered, settled to watch the television, when, all of a sudden, there was power failure.

Mr Opara was said to have gone to put on their generator placed close to their room. Time was 11 p.m. The entire famiy then slept off, hoping to switch off the generator by midnight. Soon thereafter, the generator exploded, setting the house on fire. *The charred remains of Peter Opara’s apartment While other neighbors, most of whom were jolted from sleep, scampered in different directions for safety, the fire raged , spreading to other apartments. Just then, one of them shouted, “What about Mama Opara?” They reportedly looked round but did not see any member of the Opara family.

As if responding to the question, shouts for help were heard from the Opara apartment. But no one could go for help as thick smoke had covered the veranda. An attempt by a rescuer proved abortive as he was almost chocked. The shouts for help, as gathered, continued but, at a point, they became faint and then stopped outright. The fire reportedly raged till the following day without fire servicemen coming to the family’s rescue. The neighbours reportedly battled hard to put out the fire, to no avail.

Policemen from Ejigbo division visited the scene the next day, where the charred remains of Peter Opara, his wife, Ebere, and their two-year-old baby were evacuated to the Isolo General Hospital mortuary. When Sunday Vanguard visited the scene, properties of the deceased family littered the house. Although the police said they were investigating the cause of the fire, one of the tenants, who did not want his name in print, said, “The fire was caused by their power generating set which was close to their room .

That night, all I heard was an explosion, the cause of which no one could tell. When one of us ran out to see what the problem was, he saw it was fire. And you know how it is with petrol. Immediately the whole place was engulfed . I quickly rushed in, carried two of my children who were asleep and rushed out, calling my wife to wake up. “When I got outside, I saw some of our neighbors.

You see these properties, they were brought out by some of us who managed to go in . Some people even joined us to salvage some of the properties. It is just unfortunate that Peter and his family are gone. We did not know they were trapped inside because, you know, at that point, it was every man for himself and God for all.” Vanguard Nigeria

Also wanted by the SFU is his wife, Toyin, over alleged N4 billion loan fraud. She allegedly collected the loan from Access Bank through her firm, DALTRADE.

The SFU has a warrant for Saraki arrest from a High Court in Lagos because the alleged offence of N21 billion loan fraud against him was committed in Lagos. Commissioner of police Tunde Ogunshakin of the SFU confirmed the story. Meanwhile, Saraki, last nite, said he was ready to appear before the police to answer the allegations against Saraki’s lawyer, Lawal Rabana, SAN, said that since the police were hell bent in declaring Saraki wanted, he would, on his own, appear before them.

According to him, Saraki had gone to court hoping that the police would respect the court having submitted to the jurisdiction. ”Now that the police have made it clear that they do not have respect for the judiciary, Dr. Saraki will appear before the court,” he said. Rabana said that Saraki was not on the run and had no cause to run as a distinguished person. He however did not specify the day Saraki will appear before the police.

Man who burnt wife with hot iron opens up, as emotions pour in for burnt wife ( A MUST-READ )

*My wife slept with my father thrice – Son…*It’s an abomination, I never did that- father

Henry Nnadi, the 38- year-old dry cleaner that killed his 1-year-old son, Ebuka, and burnt his wife, Mercy,36, with hot iron for allegedly sleeping with his 65-year-old father, has finally spoken on the circumstances that led to his beastly act from the confines of his prison cell at Kirikiri, Lagos.

Looking remorseless over the pains he inflicted on his wife of two years, the fair-skinned Henry only showed regrets when the issue of his dead son came up. “That was the worst thing I have ever done in my entire life. When he woke up crying for milk, I looked at him in anger and a voice came saying kill him, he is not your son. In obedience to that voice, I hit him hard on the neck several times.”

Insisting that he was unsure of the paternity of the boy, Henry gave vivid details of what transpired on the fateful Saturday, April 7, 2012. Excerpts:

“I am sure of what I am talking about. My wife, Mercy has been sleeping with my father. Before the incident, I have cautioned her to stop going to my father’s house because I suspected their moves . But she wouldn’t listen. Then one day, when she was about going out, I told her not to leave the house but she disobeyed me and went out. I waited for a while before going straight to my father’s place which is not far from where I live .

And to confirm my claim, immediately I arrived there, I knocked and my father opened the door with a towel round his waist. As I made to go in, he prevented me by blocking the entrance with his hand. I do not know how my wife managed to escape . But after waiting for a while, I left and immediately I got home, my wife had reached the house, I laughed and went to smoke to cool my temper. I was keeping all that in mind until that Saturday night.

“As I was ironing my customer’s clothes, I looked at my wife where she was sleeping on the bed and anger surged inside of me. I then heard a voice instructing me to go and ask her why she was sleeping with my father. By then, the iron was very hot and I thought I could use that to scare her.”

Burning her with the hot iron

I woke her up and asked her to tell me the truth on how many times she had slept with my father. But she refused to talk. Then the voice came to me again to place the hot iron on her and I did. As I was placing it, she told me she had slept with my father three times.

Immediately she mentioned it, I lost my cool and placed it harder on her out of anger. At that point, the child cried, wanting to suck br*ast. I looked at him wondering if I was actually his father. I thought to myself that it could be possible my father was responsible for the pregnancy that resulted in his birth.

How I killed my son

At this point the suspect kept quiet, bowed his head, shaking it intermittently in self pity. And when he raised his head, his eyes were filled with tears. Thereafter, he rested his chin on his palm and looked at the sky, muttering. After a long pause, this reporter asked him if he actually killed his son.

In reply, he said, “ that is the worst thing I have ever done in my entire life. When Ebuka woke up from sleep that night, crying for br*ast milk as he always did, I looked at him in anger and the voice came again saying , ‘kill him, he is not your son!’. In obedience to the voice, I hit him hard in the neck several times.”

Asked to described exactly how he did it, he raised his right hand like a boxer, hitting it severally on his left arm, causing this reporter to move backward, for fear of the unknown.

Continuing, he said, “You know he is a baby and very fragile. When my fist landed on him the first time, he screamed. At that point, the mother lifted her hand to prevent my next fist from landing on the boy , but I planted the hot iron on her hand”. Henry, reportedly landed another fist on the little helpless creature . At the third hit, Ebuka, as gathered, could no longer cry. He was still .

When Henry was asked why he was always beating his wife as claimed by neighbours, he admitted that they have had series of quarrel, most of which was caused by his wife’s alleged clandestine relationship with his father. He posited however that “there is no way a man and a woman would live under same roof without quarreling. It is impossible. Yes, we quarreled and settled” .

Asked if he had any regrets for his action, he replied, “sure , I do, mainly because of the death of my son. Why should a child be killed over an offense he knew nothing about? His death will continue to haunt me all the days of my life. I may not live to even atone for this sin but if by sheer providence I do, I will never forgive myself for taking the life of my innocent boy.

All this is the handiwork of the devil. If I had known, I would have not touched my son that night. I know I am going to die because I have killed my son. If it had been my wife, I would not have bothered much . But my son, ah! I have done the unimaginable” he stated in an emotion- laden tone.

When contacted for his reaction to his son’s claim, 65-year- old Theodore Nnadi described the allegation as baseless and unimaginable, wondering how a father could stoop so low as to sleep with his daughter in-law. The light skinned man swore with both visible and invisible substances, denying ever having any feeling of such towards a woman he considered as a daughter. The father of eight who said his name had been dragged in the mud following the allegation and wondered how on earth a son could mete such injustice on his father.

Recalling with pains how he tried all he could to give his son, Henry, a good future, Pa Nnadi revealed that signs of his present predicament reared its ugly head after Henry’s secondary school.

Hear him, “ After his secondary school , he began to move with irresponsible people and street urchins . In order to keep him busy, I took him to a school of engineering where he specialized in factory generator repairs. But before I knew it, that turned out to be my greatest undoing as he went into snatching of motorcycles from riders.

“He would mount a motorcycle, give the rider his destination. But midway, he would pour pepper into the rider’s eyes, causing him to loose balance and in the process make away with the motorbike and sell same at give -away price. He was arrested in one of the occasions and was imprisoned for eight years.

After he finished serving his jail term, I took him to a church where deliverance was carried out on him. Before everybody in the church, he promised never to go back to his past again. After that, he started the dry cleaning job.”

SHOCKER: Man Assaults Wife With Hot Pressing Iron ( A MUST-READ )

The suspect, Henry Nnadi

I warned his wife

After the introduction ceremony and the wife moved in with him, I started getting series of report on how he was maltreating her. Several times, the matter was reported at Ago police station where he was made to write undertaken never to raise his hand on her again. But he never complied. When the beating became unbearable, I personally told his wife never to return to my son when she traveled to her village last year. She stayed for a while, only to come back because my son, as I later learnt, went to beg her.”

Asked if he actually slept with his daughter-in-law, Mr Theodore screamed in anger, “ how can that be? That is an abomination! Before God and man, I never did that. Ah! This child wants to take me to an unprepared grave. I reject that. It is not my portion .I can never try such disgusting thing in my life. Oh my God, at this age?His intention is to soil my name. Go and ask about me where I live, or even from the village I come from. This is unimaginable. Come to think of it, I have a wife.”

Also asked to clarify his son's claim that he met his wife in his house where the father blocked the entrance, Pa Nnadi replied, almost in tears, “Only God will judge this matter. This child is a bad child. The wife used to sell pap and she usually brings it to my house where she sold to my wife .

Whenever she is leaving my house, my wife would give her some ingredients because my son was not taking care of her and their baby. For instance, when she gave birth to my grandson , Ebuka, it was one of my daughters that brought out N120,000 for the delivery bill because she gave birth through caesarian. But do you know what happened, my son, Henry, stole out of that money from where it was kept and when asked, he argued that the money was too much, that it ought to have been given to him to buy a motorcycle.

He is a pain in the neck. In fact, he had beaten me before in public, simply because I reprimanded him for fighting with his cousin. Since that incident, my people vowed never to visit his house again. I swear to God, I never did that abominable act. I have passed such stage. Besides, I am a God fearing man. Come to think of it, (grins) I live in that apartment with my wife and my other children. How on earth would that happen”?

Emotions, promises, pour in for burnt housewife

Meanwhile, following Mercy's story published in Vanguard, some concerned Nigerians and groups have continued to call in, signifying their interest to assist Mercy with the medical bill and a possible transfer to another hospital. Among those that called were Zahara Women Foundation, CENTA For Organizational Development, Bimbo Odukoya Foundation and other individuals from different parts of the country and beyond. But none of them, as at Thursday morning, had made any monetary donations.

For Bimbo Odukoya's Foundation, it promised to visit mercy at the hospital on Thursday evening with a view to carrying out on the spot assessment and proffer possible medical solution.

Zahara Women Foundation on its part, promised to visit the victim yesterday, (Friday),where its co-ordinator who called in from Canada said the foundation would do all within its reach to give Mercy legal backing as well as playing a role on her medical expenses.

Dr Eze of New Revolution hospital located in Ago, Okota area of Lagos hinted that although Mercy was responding to treatment, there are fears that some sensitive parts of the affected area were still to get healed. “For instance, her br*ast and chest region and her thigh close to the vagina are part of the critical areas.”

Vanguard Crime Guard observation revealed that fluid was still pouring out from under the br*ast , which seemed to be defiling treatment. The cause, as gathered, was because it was not exposed to air. As a result, the region is always damp with the burns causing sores. She is still going through excruciating pains, with serious anesthetics being administered to her on daily basis.

But the doctor assured that things would take its normal shape with time, disclosing that part of the burns on her back, stomach and hand were getting healed. The doctor also disclosed that as at Thursday evening, only N60,000.00 has been donated by a lady who pleaded anonymity.

But for Mercy to get back quickly on her feet again, she needs funds, first to clear the backlog of close to N600,000 which the hospital claimed was her medical bill. Out of this amount, the hospital said Mercy's father in-law was only able to pay the sum of N50,000. Presently , Pa Theodore who owns a mini boutique along Ago-Palace Way is finding it difficult to foot the bill.

Crime Guard reliably gathered that the 65-year-old man had resorted to borrowing from people in order to ensure Mercy gets back on her feet again. Plans, as gathered, is on the pipeline to open an account for Mercy where well- meaning Nigerians are enjoined to pay in their widow's mite, as this will, no doubt, go a long way in ensuring Mercy's speedy recovery.

And if this is not done on time, there are fears that the burns, particularly in the sensitive areas, could be affected, which unfortunately, can be disastrous for the helpless woman.

Meanwhile, her husband has been charged to the Ebute-Meta magistrate court, where he appeared last Tuesday. But the case could not be heard as his file with charge no G/23/2012 was referred to the Directorate of Public Defender (DPP) for advice.

However, while waiting for the account to be opened, concerned individuals can make their donations in person to the hospital- New Revolution hospital located in Ago, Okota, Lagos or reach Vanguard Crime Editor through: emmadozie@hotmail.com or 08023145281.
