Girls Rescued from Boko Haram Camp NOT from Chibok - Nigerian Military Says

Nigerian Army spokesman Sani Usman has said that the girls rescued from Boko Haram terror camps in Sambisa Forest on yesterday are "not the Chibok girls".

Nigerian troops yesterday rescued 200 girls and 93 women in the Sambisa Forest which is a stronghold for the militant Boko Haram group and is not far from Chibok. However, one official did not rule out that captives from other Boko Haram camps that were raided might include some of the 200 girls abducted in April 2014 from a school in Chibok.

In recent weeks, Nigerian troops and vigilantes moved into the Sambisa Forest. Last Wednesday the troops had to retreat because of explosive devices Boko Haram planted in the forest, according to
military sources and a vigilante who was with the troops.

On Monday, troops re-entered the forest and on Tuesday afternoon they raided Boko Haram camps and rescued scores of girls and women. CNN reports that Usman said:
"We stumbled on the girls and may find more."

The Tokumbere, Sassa and Tlafa terror camps were raided and destroyed, said a source close to the military. The Tokumbere camp is the most notorious, where the training of small children by Boko Haram is said to have occurred. Boko Haram terrorists were killed in the operation, but the military did not say how many.

Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade said the rescued girls and women are still being screened and none has spoken to their families yet.

The Indonesian government disregarded last-minute appeals and executed 8 drug traffickers including 4 Nigerians.

Pictures of the dead being buried and details from their last minutes before being executed have been released to the media. According to the pastors who were with them in their final hours, Andrew Chan, Myuran Sukumaran and the other 6 death row inmates declined to wear blindfolds and were singing as they were shot by a 13-member firing squad in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

                  The execution ground

The 8 men chose to face their executioners and spent their last minutes on earth praising God and singing songs which included 'Amazing Grace'.

On Wednesday morning, Pastor Christie Buckingham - who read Chan and Sukumaran their last rites - said the 8 death row inmates walked out onto the killing field singing religious songs in the moments before they were executed. Pastor Buckingham said the men conducted themselves with 'dignity and strength until the end'. Another pastor, Karina de Vega, said it was a 'beautiful experience'. See more photos below...

200 Girls, 93 Women Rescued From Sambisa Forest By Nigeria Army

At least 200 girls and 93 women have been rescued from Sambisa forest today by the Nigerian troops the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Armed Forces (Defence Headquarters) has said this evening. It also said three camps were destroyed including the notorious Tokumbere forest.
The army tweeted this evening that they can't confirm if Chibok girls were among the 200 girls they rescued from Sambisa forest today, that they will know after they screen and profile the rescued girls. But now Reuters, AP and Al-Jazeera are reporting that an Army Spokesperson has confirmed Chibok girls are not among the 293 girls and women rescued today.
More than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped from Chibok in northeastern Nigeria by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram in April 2014. The militants took the schoolgirls in trucks into the Sambisa Forest and the girls have been missing since then.

The plight of the schoolgirls, who have become known as "the Chibok girls," has garnered international attention and the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.

Their kidnapping brought Boko Haram to the attention of the world, arousing outrage and even U.S. first lady Michelle Obama got engaged, tweeting a photograph of herself with the campaign sign.

The Nigerian army announced two weeks ago that it would go into Sambisa Forest, which is a center for the Boko Haram fighters, and that it believed the schoolgirls may still be there.

Boko Haram has kidnapped an unknown number of girls, women and young men to be used as sex slaves and fighters. Many have escaped or been released as a multinational offensive mounted at the end of January has driven Nigeria's home-grown Islamic militants from almost all towns of the northeast. The only area left in control of Boko Haram was the Sambisa Forest, a national game reserve.

AIT Ban Is Dangerous For Democracy - PDP

Press statement from the PDP on AIT ban, which the APC has now lifted...

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as unacceptable the Monday’s directive by the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to bar a television house, the AIT, from covering his activities, saying the suppression of the media under any guise portends danger for the nation’s democracy.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Tuesday said that after carefully studying the defence posited by General Buhari’s campaign spokesperson as well as the smokescreen statement by the APC to cover and mitigate his anti-media posture, the PDP and indeed all lovers of democracy are persuaded that the action was not only unjustifiable, but also unconstitutional and completely against the spirit of liberty and the rule of law in a democracy.

He said “the PDP as a party that have nurtured the nation’s democracy in the past 16 years cannot afford to fold its hands and watch the constitutional rights, media freedom and personal liberty of Nigerians, the basic tenets of democracy being demolished.

“We ask, is this a beginning of the feared erosion of the freedom and personal liberty the media and Nigerian citizens have been enjoying in the last 16 years under the PDP led-administration? Has our dear nation finally fallen into the clutches of totalitarianism and impunity where government actions will based on egocentric decisions and impulses of individuals rather than the rule of law?

“While we assure the President-elect of our resolve to run a mature and responsible opposition based on issues, we are disturbed by this emerging development and reassure the Nigerian people that we will continue to stand with them on issues of democracy and freedom at all times.

“Perhaps, we need to remind General Buhari that part of the challenge of his new position, even as President-elect is that he has lost his private life which is now subject to public scrutiny and media interrogation, as required of the custodian of the mandate of the Nigerian people.

“The PDP is not oblivious of the background of the President-elect especially as it relates to the freedom of the media, but we had thought that having declared to be a converted democrat, he would make himself amenable to the basic principles of democracy by following the due process of the law on any circumstance.

“General Buhari may also wish to be reminded that the Nigerian constitution upon which provisions he emerged President-elect, also gave the media powers to cover activities of public office holders while at the same time providing legal avenues for redress in the event of any violation. If the right of the President-elect was in anyway violated by the AIT or any media house for that matter, he is expected to act within the law and seek redress in the courts otherwise one would have no option than to conclude that he is out for personal vendetta.

“The APC and the President-elect may have one or two lessons to pick from President Goodluck Jonathan, who though the most maligned and abused President in the history of our nation, even by the APC, allowed his actions to be sufficiently guided by humility, tolerance and the rule of law”, the PDP said.

The party called on Nigerians not to despair but remain steadfast and unite in resisting any anti-democratic tendencies intended to instill fear in them and set the stage for a dictatorial order and the erosion of their personal freedom and liberty as citizens, which they have been enjoying in the last 16 years under the PDP.

Staffs of Africa Independent Television(AIT) have been barred from covering all activities of  the President-elect, Gen. Buhari until issues bordering on ethics and standards against them have been addressed.

AIT crew members were today escorted out of the Defence House where the president-elect currently resides. He was about to have a meeting with the Cuban and Switzerland ambassadors when the reporters were escorted out.

Speaking on the development, the spokesperson of the Buhari campaign organization, Shehu Garba said family and security concerns necessitated it.
"AIT has been asked to step aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics. We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter, but for now the station has been asked to stay aside because, like I said, there are some family and security concerns.

They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards‎. You can quote me that I said that we have asked them to step aside and that we are resolving the the issues of ethics and standards with them.”he said

A two-year-old toddler, Precious (pseudonym) has been r*ped by one Azeez Ganiyu, after she was abducted from her residence on Giwa Street, Ijora Badia, Lagos State.

The incident happened on April 16 at about 10am after the victim’s mother left her in a room with a neighbour to buy food at a nearby shop.

According to PUNCH Metro, 16-year-old Ganiyu abducted the girl when she walked outside to play with other children. He reportedly took her to an uncompleted building, said to be a few kilometers away from the victim parents’ house, and defiled her.

Precious’ mother and neighbours were thrown into confusion when they did not see the girl in the surroundings. After minutes of fruitless search, it was learnt that the mother suddenly heard a baby screaming and traced the voice to the uncompleted building, where she allegedly met Ganiyu committing the crime.

Precious was taken to a hospital where it was medically confirmed that she had been r*ped. And the suspect, who also resides in the community, was later arrested by the police at the Ijora Badia Police Division.

The police subsequently arraigned Ganiyu before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court on one count of rape. The charge read:
“That you, Azeez Abdulganiyu (16), on April 16, 2015, at about 10am on Giwa Street, Ijora Badia, Lagos in the Apapa Magisterial District, did unlawfully have carnal knowledge of a two-year-old girl.”
The police prosecutor, Inspector Olusoji Ojaokomo, told the court that the offence contravened provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty before the presiding magistrate, Mr. P.A. Adekomaya.

The magistrate ordered that the defendant’s case file be transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum. And adjourned till May 5, 2015.

Hundreds Of Decomposed Bodies Found In Damasak Following Attacks By Boko Haram

Hundreds of decomposed bodies including those of women and children were discovered by a government committee in Damasak, northern Borno State this past weekend. The committee was set up by Governor Kashim Shettima to assess the level of destruction in towns

According to Daily Trust, the victims were suspected to have been killed by Boko Haram insurgents as they fled the town following an onslaught by Chadian forces to recapture the town.

Credible sources said decomposed bodies littered the streets while many others were discovered inside houses, shallow graves and rivers that have dried up on the onset of the dry season.

The committee spent the weekend recovering and burying remains of the victims under the watchful eyes of Chadian troops who sacked the insurgents from Damasak some weeks ago.

Witnesses and government officials told Daily Trust that the insurgents carried out the massacre during their reign of terror that lasted several months in the fishing community.
Senator-elect Borno North Senatorial District, Alhaji Abukakar Kyari, said there was "large scale atrocity" committed by the insurgents in Damasak and other towns and villages in northern part of Borno State.

However, Kyari denied suggestions that among the victims were some of the 500 children abducted by the militants a few months ago.
It was said that the children were locked up in an Arabic school in Damasak and that they died of suffocation and hunger.

Kyari said: "I have full knowledge of what the committee did in Damasak and the fact is that there was nowhere that bodies of over 500 children was discovered.
"Of course, many people have been killed but nobody or group brought all the dead bodies to one place.

" What really happened was that following the liberation of Damasak by Chadian and Nigerien forces and a visit by a committee that we set up, we again sent our people there on Saturday (25th April) and they worked assiduously in recovering many dead bodies.

"I cannot tell you the precise number of dead bodies but they are many. The people that went to Damasak divided themselves into various groups, recovered the bodies and buried them in various graves," he said.

Kyari said some bodies were recovered in Kareto and others in Damasak.
He said preliminary investigations suggested that some of the fresh corpses were those of insurgents killed by Chadian and Niger Republic troops.

Community leaders have warned that civilians are still at risk, especially those returning to remote areas like Gujba where the military’s deployment has typically been thin.
Many experts agree that Boko Haram is likely to transition from capturing and holding territory to reverting to a pattern of hit-and-run attacks.
Analysts say boastings from regional armies should be treated with caution, as the Islamists are far from defeated and can easily regroup, especially if there is a let-up in the military pressure.

Xenophobia : South African Govt Expresses Anger Over Nigerian Government's Recall Of Her Ambassadors

South African government has released a statement expressing their displeasure over Nigerian government's decision to recall her envoys following Xenophobic attacks in countyr.

In a statement released by the South African government's Department of International Relations and Co-operations, SA government described the decision as an unfortunate and regrettable step, adding that only Nigeria has taken such a decision since the xenophobic attacks began.

According to the statement, the South African government did not blame Nigeria when 84 of her citizens died in the Synagogue  Church of All Nations building collapse last year. Read the statement below...

The South African Government takes note that the outgoing Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has recalled its Acting High Commissioner to South Africa. A government resorts to such an extraordinary diplomatic step to express outrage at actions or Behavior of another government.

We are not sure which actions or behavior of the South African Government the Nigerian Government is protesting. It is only Nigeria that has taken this unfortunate and regrettable step.  If this action is based on the incidents of attacks on foreign nationals in some parts of our country, it would be curious for a sisterly country to want to exploit such a painful episode for whatever agenda.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has just returned from Indonesia to attend the Africa-Asia Summit and the 60th Anniversary of the historic Bandung Conference.  At no stage did the Nigerian delegation present at that gathering, expressed its intention to formally raise the issue with the South African side.

South Africa remains committed to a strong bond of friendship and bilateral relations with Nigeria.  It is for this reason that when 84 of our citizens perished on Nigerian soil, we did not blame the Nigerian Government for the deaths and more than nine (9) months delay in the repatriation of the bodies of our fallen compatriots, or for the fact that when these bodies eventually returned, they were in a state that they could not be touched or viewed as required by our burial practice.
We will raise our concerns through diplomatic channels with the new administration that will assume office in Nigeria next month.

The South African Government, as well as all political parties, religious organisations, non-governmental organisations, business, sports fraternities, including artists, musicians  and ordinary people of South Africa, have been decisive and unequivocal in condemning and rejecting the attacks on foreign nationals.

Through our interventions, relative calm and order has been restored. We are encouraged by the solidarity our country continues to receive from other African countries and the international community. We shall also continue to support and not blame the Nigerian Government as it battles to deal with Boko Haram that continues to kill many innocent civilians. We hope that the more than 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram will someday be reunited with their families.

Senator Hope Uzodimma Denies Being Arrested Over Ballot Thumb Printing

Some reports circulating yesterday stated that Senator Hope Uzodimma and some family members were arrested by police in Imo state for allegedly thumb-printing ballot papers meant for the governorship rerun election. He just released a statement saying it's not true. Read below...

Senator Hope Uzodimma (Imo West) has cautioned politicians in the country against ridiculing and tarnishing the hard reputation of their opponents.
He said politicians who indulge in such act were not helping Nigeria’s fledging democracy to thrive but  were wittingly and unnecessarily heating up the polity.

Reacting to allegations that he, along with some of his family members were  arrested by the police in his Omuma country home in Imo State over alleged electoral malpractices during last Saturday’s re-run Governorship and House of Assembly Elections in the State,Uzodimma said that neither he nor any member of his family was arrested.

He said as a lawmaker who has distinguished himself in the Upper Chamber,he would not break any of the country’s laws or any law for that matter and that he  would not encourage any of his family members to do so.

Uzodimma said that what transpired on the day is that the All Progressives Alliance (APC) in the state in concert with some thugs and the party’s agents had  unsuccessfully tried to snatch some ballot boxes  from Oru East and Oru West which are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s strongholds under his leadership in the state.

“Vigilant members of the PDP were able to foil the opponents’ attempts and having failed in their bid they resorted to blackmail, ridicule and tarnish my name.I know this is elections period  but to concort any story at a given time to disparage an opponent is unbecoming. This is unfortune”, he added.

The Senator said  he was the person who called in the police when he was alerted of the attempts to hijack the ballot boxes “ and the police promptly came and brought the situation under control. For people to turn around to say the direct opposite is unfortunate”.

He appealed to politicians to be decent in their politicking and avoid those actions that could bring the integrity of their opponents into disrepute as such will only heat up the polity with dire consequences.

Patience Jonathan’s Attitude & Anti-gay Bill Made Jonathan Lose The Election - PDP Chieftain Says

Bayelsa state PDP publicity secretary, Mr. Osom Makbere says international and local factors contributed to President Jonathan's defeat at the 2015 general elections. He blamed it most on the president's wife and the signing of the anti-gay bill.

"Jonathan was a victim and target of international cum domestic esoteric codes and conspiracies. On the international level, the passage of the anti-gay legislation led to criticisms and face-off with the US, and the West. The strides made in the economic sphere, especially domestic rice promotion, calculated by the Jonathan administration to flip economic growth, and boost import substitution, also negatively alerted the West.

The shift to China for our railway transformation, and recently, the migration to Russia for arms and ammunition to quelling the insurgency also signalled to the West that Jonathan had started constituting a self-reliant and dependent nation-state, a feat seen too tall by the US and their allies in the West. The aforesaid international factors found room to flourish given the obstinacy and impudence on the part of Mrs. Jonathan. The end result of her personal ambition to plant ‘self-made’ governors triggered face-offs with some governors.” he told Punch.

My Daughter Was Under A Spell, Mother Of Nanny That Kidnapped Orekoya Kids Begs For Mercy

The last has certainly not been heard about Funmilayo Adeyemi, the arrested notorious nanny who confessed to be the mastermind of the kidnap of the Orekoya and the Esharegaran kids in Lagos.

She was arrested on Wednesday last week by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos police command, Ikeja.

The mother of four and aged 35, Funmilayo was declared wanted when the news of the kidnap of the Orekoya three kids by their nanny hit the media. The story was that Funmilayo, who claimed that her name was Mary Akinloye, was recruited through a popular online platform. She disappeared with the kids on April 10, barely 24 hours after she resumed work at the Orekoya family residence in Surulere, Lagos.

The kidnap syndicate initially demanded N15 million from the Orekoyas, a ransom that was later negotiated to N13 million out of which N2 million was paid into a given bank account to bait the suspects. The children identified as Demola, 6, Adedamola, 4, and Aderomola, 11months, were later dumped naked in an uncompleted building on Tuesday last week after nine days in their abductors’ custody.

She also admitted that her gang arranged the December 2014 kidnap of two kids; Raphael and Michael Esharegaran in Magodo area of the state. She equally confessed that her husband, Rasheed Kareem, brother-in-law, Hakeem Kareem and their mother who are still at large are members of the kidnap syndicate, which she called ‘family business.’

In an exclusive encounter by DailySun with Funmilayo’s mother, Prophetess Esther Adeyemi at the police station, she looked visibly shocked at the confession of her daughter on TV. She stormed Lagos police command, Ikeja to confirm that the suspect being paraded on TV was actually her first child, Funmilayo.

Prophetess Adeyemi claimed that her visit to the police station to identify the suspect on Monday was the first time she was seeing her daughter since she left home in 2005.

“She told me that she was going back to school and never came back home. She left us eight years ago. They kidnapped and hypnotized my daughter”, she lamented.
Mrs Adeyemi said she had borne the burden of training Funmilayo and three others all alone ever since their father died in the 90s.

“All has always been well till their father died. He was killed during the Ife and Modakeke fight. During that time, we were based in Calabar and as expected we were evicted from the barracks and we relocated to Osun State.
He died as a Chief Superintendent of Police. Luckily, I am a prophetess and I decided to embrace my ministry. I had to get closer home and most importantly close to the mountain. By the grace of God, I became popular in Lagos and Ajah.

As the first daughter of the house, I wanted the best for her, so I invested in her education. She got admission to study Survey at Osun Polytechnic. After her graduation, she worked briefly as a receptionist till one day in 2005, she came to me that she wanted to go back to school for her HND.

I gave her enough money to sustain her for months. This was the last I heard from her. I was worried but anytime that I attempted to call the police, she will call her sister and tell her that she is fine. This always happened anytime I go to the mountain to pray. She is 35 years and old enough to be a mother but I never knew that I had four grandchildren from her,” Mrs Adeyemi narrated.
When asked why she did not use her gift of prophecy to find her daughter, Mrs. Adeyemi said:
“I never knew that she was lost, so I did not bother focusing my prayer on her. I felt that she is an adult and should be allowed to live her life. Most especially, since she gets in touch with her sister, I felt no need to worry. The only time I spoke with her, she said that she was in South Africa.”

She called on the Orekoya family and others who have fallen victims of Funmilayo’s kidnap syndicate to forgive her daughter as she was hypnotized.
“They kidnapped my daughter and placed her under a spell. What sort of human being from a Christian background will suddenly decide to sell their soul to the devil?
Please, forgive my daughter and give me the chance to break the spell. You all heard that she claimed that she wanted to expand their family wealth. Which normal woman would be working for a man who has refused to marry her after four children? Please, have mercy on my daughter. I thank God that none of the kids died in the process,” she pleaded.

How she learnt about her arrest, Mrs. Adeyemi said that it was her little daughter that tried to draw her attention to the news on social media.

“She called me that a lady who looks like my daughter is on her whatsapp. I waved it aside till I saw her pictures everywhere. It was a great shock. I prayed for the ground to open and swallow me. The shame was too much but no matter how bad a child turns out to be, a mother cannot abandon him or her. I am ashamed but all the same I thank God that she is truly alive.

It could be God’s way of rescuing my daughter from the hands of those criminals. She is under a spell and almighty God will help me deliver her,” Mrs Adeyemi stated.
As soon as the Orekoya’s kids were taken, the news was all over the social media, while the family reported the matter at the nearest police station in Itire, Surulere. Funmilayo and her gang contacted the family and demanded N15 million ransom.

Not happy that the Itire police station didn’t act promptly when they got the first complaint on the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti ordered that the case be transferred to the state command.

A team of SARS detectives led by Abba Kyari swung into action and traced the criminals to their hideout in Shasha, Akowonjo area of Lagos. As soon as the kids were released Tuesday night, detectives stormed the hotel where Funmilayo and her maid were moved to by her husband and arrested her while they were busy plotting how to escape from Lagos. Though three other gang members escaped and are still at large, Funmilayo was not as lucky.

Saturday Sun gathered that out of the ransom money paid into a bank account, the kidnappers were only able to withdraw about N400,000 using ATM before the bank placed it on red alert and blocked further withdrawals.

Giving Saturday Sun an insight into how she came into crime, Funmilayo, in an exclusive interview at the police station, claimed that it was her relationship with the family of the father of her children that landed her into crime.

“I am a graduate of Osun polytechnic and I have Diploma in Survey. After my studies, I got a job as a receptionist in Osun State, it was there I met Rasheed Kareem and we became friends. I was worried that at the age of 27, I was yet to get married. Luckily, I got pregnant for him and he accepted responsibility for the pregnancy. He introduced me to his family and they accepted me. He also promised that as soon as his finance improves, that he would marry me in church. Since I knew that he would finally become my husband, I had three other kids making them four”, she said.

Desperate to be called Mrs. Kareem, Funmilayo said she did not bother to ask what her husband’s real business was.

“I knew that there was something wrong about him but I needed to marry as I was not getting younger. I knew that if I complained, I would lose him to other women. This was why when my brother-in-law came up with the idea that they wanted me to help them kidnap children, I accepted. I accepted because since I am a mother, I will ensure that all the children kidnapped were well taken care of.
According to the suspect, her husband and brother-in-law, Hakeem had the duty of sourcing for possible targets.

“They gave me different names, including Mary Akinloye. All I know is that as soon as they get anyone, I will be the one to make the call and follow it up. This was how they contacted the Esharegaran family in Magodo and several others, including the Orekoya family. I will paint a picture of a poor lady who was looking for nanny job. I will demand to know the kind of accommodation.

Even when I go to their houses, my husband and in-law will follow me to assess the environment. If there is any need for a guarantor, my mother-in-law will pose as my mother who lives in Ikorodu. Everybody in that family was involved, so it was very easy to co-ordinate. If it is not good, I will call and give an excuse for my lack of interest in the job. The one at Magodo was a good one”, she narrated.

Nigerian Men Are Snatching Our Wives – South African Politician

South African politician, Makashule Gana, has said that some of his compatriots complained to him that they are angry with Nigerians and other immigrants because they snatched their girlfriends.

Gana, a Deputy Federal Chairperson of Democratic Alliance, made this disclosure at an anti-xenophobia rally, held at Constitution Hill.

South African newspaper, City Press, reports that Gana advised that rather than get angry and take the anger out on foreigners, South African men should “provide” properly for women, instead of lashing out at non-nationals for “stealing” women away.

“If you can’t speak to a girl, now all of a sudden a man that comes from Zimbabwe or Nigeria that can speak to a girl now must be killed. What is that?
So I ask my fellow brothers from South Africa, if you want a woman please go speak up, don’t go around and killing someone from Nigeria because they can speak up for themselves. Speak out because it is important,” he told the crowd.

Gana urged the crowd at the rally to spread the message of not taking part in xenophobic attacks to “our wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, makhwaphenis (secret lovers), neighbours and brothers”. He also urged South Africans to look at themselves and not blame non-nationals for stealing their jobs when these jobs didn’t exist in the first place.
“Go and start a spaza shop,” advised Gana.

The Nigerian Army in a gale of retirements has pulled out 31 Generals from Service and also called for the archiving of the experiences gathered in the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram in the North East.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah while speaking during the Pulling Out Ceremony of the 17 Major Generals and 14 Brigadier Generals, at    Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, also charged serving Officers to imbibe the virtue of loyalty to the nation being exemplified by the retiring officers.

Minimah who was represented by the Army Chief of Policy and Plans, Maj-Gen. Ugo Buzugbe, while speaking to journalists after the event, noted that it was a "Thing of pride to have joined the army served meritorious, and are retiring hale and hearty in one piece".

According to him, the ceremony was to honour some of their colleagues who were retiring after serving meritoriously.

He said: "In the army it was a thing of pride to have joined the army, serve in the army and retire meritoriously in sound health. Service in the military is service to humanity because it is only the profession that you pay the supreme price.

"As long as we have conflict that will demand the military involved  some of us  are ready to pay the supreme price as that is what service in the army is all about".

"The only way to surmount the roughness of the profession, because it is rough most of the time, is by training and being professional on the job, this is sacrifice that requires loyalty, commitment and hard work", he added.

Responding on behalf of the retired officers, Maj. Gen. Emmanuel  Bassey (Rtd) called on the Nigerian Army to carefully document its experiences in the ongoing operations in the North-East with a view to improving on its overall combat efficiency.

Bassey who was the reviewing officer at the pulling out ceremony of 31 retired Army Generals, in a Valedictory address on behalf of his colleagues, insisted that combat operation methods and logistics must be reviewed amongst others to enhance combat readiness and efficiency.

He said: "There is indeed no substitute to sound professionalism in the conduct of your duties, no matter its nature or degree of importance. The current security challenge that the Nigerian Army currently faces comes to mind as we retired officers follow the trend of events that affect our constituency-the military.

"It is heart-warning however, to note that very significant progress has been made in the fight against terrorism.

The army must therefore sustain the current momentum and put this difficult moment of our national history behind us".

Bassey commended the Chief of Army Staff and all personnel of the Army for the accomplishment and assured them of the retired officers’ support always.

He reminded the officers to remain loyal and to be extra vigilant always adding that they must demonstrate total commitment to their duty to the nation irrespective of the circumstances.

Bassey further stated that the retired officers should consider themselves fortunate to have retired from the service with sound health.

Going down memory lane, he noted, you will recollect that some of our colleagues paid the supreme sacrifice along the line under various circumstances, all in the service of our dear nation.

South African Minister Denied Visa Into Israel

In the wake of the xenophobic attacks in the country, a minister from South Africa was denied visa to visit Israel for diplomatic work. According to Aljazeera...

The government of South Africa has expressed outrage after Israel's decision to deny a visa to Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande. Clayson Monyela, Deputy Director General of Department of International Relations and Cooperation, told Al Jazeera on Thursday the Israeli government needed to offer a reason for the snubbing.

"We are taking it up through the proper channels. We need to receive a proper explanation for the denial of a visa to a sitting cabinet minister," Monyela said.

The minister was scheduled to travel to the occupied Palestinian territories from April 25-29. He was scheduled to secure further collaboration with the University of Johannesburg and institutions in Palestine.

Nzimande's spokesperson told local media that the denial of the visa had caused a "serious diplomatic problem".

Naeem Jeenah, Director of Afro-Middle East Centre, based in Johannesburg, described the snubbing as "surprising" considering the two countries' growing trade relations.

Jeenah said the Palestinian solidarity movement in South Africa "would be thrilled" with Israel's decision "because South Africa now has to respond to this matter".

Arthur Lenk, the Israeli ambassador in Pretoria, told Al Jazeera that South African officials routinely visit the West Bank through Israel.

Lenk would not be drawn into discussing why specifically Nzimande's visa application was denied, though he described the minister as being "very vocal on a range of issues connected to Israel, South Africa and my region".

The ambassador said the decision to deny the visa was made in Israel.

"The decision came from Jerusalem," Lenk said.
Vocal critic of Israel
But Jeenah said that anything the Israelis say on the matter "could really only make the situation worse".

The Palestinian embassy in South Africa described the decision as "racist".
"We take note by this aggressive action that Israel is trying to implement the same rule as in the previous apartheid regime of South Africa," the embassy said in a statement.

The Palestinian lobby group Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS-South Africa) released a statement saying it's "more confident than ever that its time to expel the Israeli Ambassador from South Africa".

"Israel cannot want to tell us who our friends should be, where we should travel and who we can speak with." BDS said.

Nzimande has been a vocal critic of Israel. His spokesperson said on Thursday the minister would call on all higher education institutions to cut ties with their counterparts in Israel.
"We must just boycott Israel," Nkwanyana reportedly said.

South Africa currently has full diplomatic relations with Israel and recognises Israel within the borders demarcated by the United Nations (UN) in 1948.
