THE national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday threw its weight behind Federal Government’s planned removal of fuel subsidy, saying it was in the best interest of the citizenry.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, PDP Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, said the removal would not only provide funds for infrastructure development, but it would also restore the middle class in the country.

Besides, he said, the Federal Government was deeply committed to tackling decaying infrastructure, provision of jobs to unemployed youths, stimulation of investments in critical sectors and provision of security. He said unfortunately, Nigeria depended on oil export earnings to run the economy.

His words: “You may recall that throughout the campaign period in March to April this year, President Goodluck Jonathan repeatedly stated the commitment and determination of his government, when elected, to transform Nigeria into a stable, productive and competitive economy.

Since assumption of office, the President has stated in very clear terms that the task of putting the Nigerian economy on a sound footing required the support and cooperation of all Nigerians. In the short period President Jonathan has been in the saddle, he has shown enormous preparedness and demonstrated capacity to surmount the economic challenges facing the nation.”
