Boko Haram said it was negotiating the release of the hostages killed in a failed rescue effort on Thursday. It was reported by Mauritanian news agency Nouakchott Information (ANI) that quoted a spokesperson for the militant Islamist sect.

Franco Lamolinara and Chris McManus were killed by their kidnappers shortly before the operation carried out by a British-Nigerian rescue team. Another source, speaking on behalf of the breakaway faction of Boko Haram that kidnapped Lamolinara and MacManus, said the family of the Italian hostage was involved in the negotiations.

The source explained that it had been agreed that a ransom of 1.2 million euro should be paid, without any involvement from the Nigerian government
