Oba Akadiri Okanola, the Olokini of Okinni in Osun, and one Abbass Mojeed, 25, have appeared before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court charged with child stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr Michael Iniavan, told the court that the monarch, 65, Mojeed and others now at large committed the offence on Feb. 19, at about 12 p.m. at Dam Road in Ejigbo, Osun.

Iniavan told the court that the accused persons “with intent to deprive the parents of a 9-year-old boy of having access to him stole the child”.

He said that the offence contravened section 516 and 371 of the Osun Criminal Laws 2003.

Mojeed pleaded guilty to the charge while the monarch pleaded not guilty.

The Counsel to the monarch, Mr Bola Ige, orally applied for bail for his client and the Chief Magistrate, Mr Adewumi Makanjuola, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties in like sum.

Makanjuola ordered each of the sureties to submit two passport photographs to the court and later adjourned hearing of the case till March 12.

The first accused, Mojeed, who pleaded guilty confessed during his summery trial that he and his friends now at large stole the boy and handed him over to the Oba.

He further informed the court that they stole two children on two occasions, which they gave to the monarch, who in return rewarded them with N5,000 each.

He, however, pleaded for leniency.

The magistrate reserved further hearing till March 12. (NAN)
