Police arrest bullion van robbery leader

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested one Lawrence Odum, the alleged gang leader of the N68 million bullion van robbery incident in Nsukka.

The command’s spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, said on Friday in Enugu that the gang leader was arrested by security operatives in Port-Harcourt in a bank where he went to cash money.

Amaraizu, who announced this in a statement, said Odum was arrested through the aid of e-tracking device, a new system used by financial institutions to track suspects.

He said the suspect was the master mind of the bullion van armed robbery and since then, the command had been on the trail of the gang members.

The spokesman also said the suspect was helping the command in its investigation, adding that Odum had narrated his alleged role in the robbery.

In a related development, the command has arrested two suspected cable vandals in an attempt to vandalise NITEL cable along Central Bank Road, following a tip off from the public.

Amaraizu gave the names of the suspects as Okechukwu Eze and Chinedu Okoye.

He added that they were arrested together with their vehicle with registration number EG 78 LND.

Amaraizu called on the public to always provide useful information to the police, and assured that the command would not fail them.

Man, 36, remanded in prison for alleged robbery

And in Lagos A 36-year-old man, Joseph Ekpeke, was on Friday in Lagos remanded in Ikoyi Prisons for allegedly robbing a woman of a mobile phone and jewellery valued at N1.5million.

The accused, who resides in Badagry, is facing a two-count charge of felony and armed robbery at an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court.

The plea of Ekpeke was not taken and he was ordered to be remanded in prison custody, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Magistrate Oluwakemi Doja-Ojo adjourned the case to April 26, pending the DPP’s advice.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the accused with others still at large, who were armed with guns, allegedly robbed one Bolanle Obashekola.

Ajayi said the accused also robbed the woman of her mobile phone, a pair of shoes and jewellery, all valued at N1.5 million.

He said the accused committed the offences at about 12. 00 a.m. on Jan. 8 at a bus stop in Ajao Estate, Isolo, Lagos.

Ajayi said the offences contravened Sections 1 and 6 of the Robbery and Fire Arms (special provisions), Laws of the Federation 2004.
