A Lagos-based spiritualist, Gabriel Ogunniyi, has been sentenced to 55 years imprisonment with hard labour by a Lagos State High Court, for defrauding a housewife of N20.7millon.
The convict who was charged to court by the EFCC was said to have lied to Mrs. Sike Fadere, that he would solve her “business and spiritual problems” using his powers of “invocation.”
When the charges were read to him, Ogunniyi pleaded guilty.
Trial judge, Justice Morenike Obadina convicted him of the eight counts of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence brought against him.
The charges read: “That you, Gabriel Ogunniyi, some time in February 2004 at Egbeda, Akowonjo, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, with intent to defraud, obtained 100,000 euros from Mrs Sike Ade Fadare.
“You pretended to her that you possessed power and skill invocation of invisible means to solve Mrs Fadere’s business and spiritual problems which pretence you knew to be false.”
The offences contravened sections 2 (b) and 8 (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, No. 14, 2006.
The court handed down 10 years each on some counts, and five on others, all adding up to 55 years, to run concurrently.
