53-year-old arraigned for manslaughter

The police in Lagos have arraigned a 53-year-old driver, Ganiyu Oyewale, before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ikeja on a three-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter. 

 Oyewale, who lives in Agbado area of Ogun State, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges. According to the Police prosecutor, ASP Barth Nwaokeye, the defendant had on February 27, 2012, while driving his employer’s KIA RIO, caused the death of a 53-year-old man, Mr Rotimi Fomoofo.

 Nwaokeye alleged that Oyewale, on the aforementioned date and time, drove recklessly and dangerously along New Site, Oke-Aro road area of Ogun State on the public highway without due regard for other road users.

 He told the court that Oyewale drove the car with Reg. No. EV 684 EKY without a valid driver’s licence, adding that the offence contravenes Sections 7(1), 18 and 27 of the Road Traffic Act (RTA) Laws of Lagos State, 2003. The matter was adjourned to May 2, 2012 for commencement of trial.
