Death toll has risen to 40 in a Catholic church building that collapsed on them at Adamgbe Village, Mbayongo in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State, last Saturday.
Daily Sun gathered the worshippers had gathered around 9:00 p.m. for the Easter Mass when the building collapsed, killing many of them on the spot while others sustained various degrees of injury.
The worshippers of the St. Roberts Catholic Church Adamgbe, Mbayongo were said to be in the middle of the Easter night vigil when the church wall fell, crushing several people to death. A survivor, Michael Tyokyaa described the incident as tragic, adding, it took long before help could came their way.
Tyokyaa revealed further that police officers from Vandeikya township in the local government managed to arrive the scene almost an hour after the collapse of the building.
State Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Jonathan Zathsy who is a native of the village, told Daily Sun on phone that as soon as he got the news he sent his local government party chairman to the village.“My party chairman told me that over 20 corpses were removed in his presence before he left the church.
It is very sad indeed. The people gathered for the Easter Mass when the building collapsed on them.”
Mbayongo Vandeikya is a community in Benue State that borders Obudu in Cross River State. The church attendance provides some sort of spiritual and psychological comfort to many.
