Joyce Banda was sworn in Saturday as Malawi’s first female president in a ceremony in the capital Lilongwe, two days after the death of her predecessor Bingu wa Mutharika.
“I will well and truly perform the functions of the high office of the president of the Republic of Malawi,” Banda said as she recited the oath of office, ending fears of a power struggle in the poor southern African nation.
No room for revenge- Banda
Malawi’s new President Joyce Banda called for unity and reconciliation at her swearing-in Saturday, two days after her predecessor and political rival Bingu wa Mutharika died in office.
“I just sincerely hope that there is no room for revenge.
I just sincerely hope that we shall stand united,” she said, after taking her oath to thunderous applause and joyous singing in Malawi’s parliament.
