More facts have emerged as to the circumstances that led to the death of a 72-year-old Ilesa chief, Felix Amore, who was hit by an Iroko tree at Ita Akogun Area of Ilesa, Osun State, on Sunday evening.
According to accounts of those in the neighbourhood, the tree, which was as old as Ilesa town itself, had records of mysterious occurrences and that it had caused many havocs in the past.
Sources disclosed that the tree, which fell and killed the man in the afternoon, had spiritual conotation because there was no rain nor storm before it fell.
The tree, the Nigerian Tribune investigations revealed, served as a place of refuge for Ijesha people during war time.
The source added that only a part of the tree fell on the people while its other part was still firmly rooted in the ground, saying there was no sign to suggest that such calamity could have occurred.
The late Amore was said to be waiting for some people by the road- side under the tree when the incident occurred, a circumstance described as mysterious.
The timely intervention of men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) saved other victims from dying as first aid treatment was administered on them.
The Head of Disaster Management of NSCDC, Mr Olaniyi Babalola confirmed that only one person died in the disaster and other victims were in the hospital receiving treatment while also saying they were responding positively to treatment.
Chief Amore was the Elemeso of Oke-Eso in Ilesa.
The corpse of the late Amore was said to have been deposited at the mortuary of Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.
