Man Kills And Buries His Father in Shallow Grave in Anambra(Photos)

 The man pictured above allegedly killed and buried his own father in Umuajana Village Umudioka, Dunukofia LGA of Anambra state.

The old man had gone missing for some days and his family had started looking for him. The shallow grave where the son buried him was discovered on Sunday March 6th, around 2pm after someone raised suspicion. The son was handed over to the police for further investigation. UNILAG Disowns Lecturer Who R*ped Friend's Daughter Seeker Admission

 Authorities of the University of Lagos yesterday disowned the randy lecturer, Dr. Akin Baruwa, who allegedly r*ped an 18-year-old admission seeker.

Baruwa allegedly r*ped the young girl (name withheld), who is seeking admission to the university, in his office on July 23, 2015.

The lecturer, currently in detention at the Kirikiri Prison, was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, on Thursday.

But speaking with PUNCH on Sunday, the Head, Information Unit of the university, Mr. Olagoke Oke, said Baruwa was not an employee of the institution.

According to him, no such name exists on the university’s employee list whether teaching or non-teaching.

He added:

 “The said Dr. Baruwa is a not a member of staff of the university, whether teaching or non-teaching. He also does not belong to the part-time or full-time teaching staff of the school. His name is not on the master list of workers of the university. I have checked the staff list using his full name and initials and could not come up with any such name as of Friday, August 6, 2015. 

I have also checked the list of office accommodation given to members of staff of the university and his name is not there. There is no office allocation attached to such a name. How he reportedly entered the said office where the crime took place is what we are looking into as an institution. 

While we sympathise with the alleged victim, we are ready to cooperate with every agency of government to get to the root of the matter as soon as possible. As an institution, we do not support any act of violence, not even against women. Therefore, we will help to ensure that the case comes to a logical conclusion.”

Meanwhile, as the authorities disowned the lecturer, some students, in the Faculty of Business Administration, who craved anonymity for fear of victimisation, claimed that the suspect was a part-time lecturer of the accounting department of the university.

One of them said:

 “I know him as a part-time lecturer in the accounting department. I wonder what the university wants to achieve now by trying to disown him.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, Prof. Rasheed Ojikutu, could not be reached as of 6pm on Sunday.

Baruwa, who the police in Lagos arrested on August 3, reportedly confessed to the act but claimed that the sex was by mutual consent.

We’re Yet to Receive Bailout Promised by President Buhari - Governors Cry Out

 36 state governors cried out, yesterday, over the worsening economic condition in the country and the failure of the Federal Government to give them the bailout funds promised by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The governors at their meeting which started Wednesday night and ended in the early hours of yesterday, complained that the comprehensive relief package designed by the Federal Government to salvage the economic crisis of the states was yet to be given to them.

The governors also expressed concern over the exchange rate of the dollar to the naira as well as other foreign currencies which has affected the nation’s economy.

They have, therefore, resolved to meet the President again over the issue.

 12 of the 36 states of the federation were said to be owing their workers more than $550 million in salaries and allowances, with some workers not paid for 7 months.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, said that the Federal Government has not bailed out any state under the bailout arrangement  as publicised, stressing that what the state got so far was the monthly allocation  from the Federation Accounts, Allocation Committee, FAAC and the dividends from Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG.

Governor Yari said: 

“This is also to inform our friends in the media that the Federal Government has not given any bailout to any of the states. What had been shared the last time was monies from NLNG and FAAC. As we have been saying, rather than look out for bailout, we have been looking for all monies that are in the coffers of the federation to be brought together for the purpose of sharing.

“The CBN governor raised some issues that taking the monies from those accounts, most especially as our reserves are going down, will affect the exchange rate and as well put pressure on the naira. So they decided to make the naira available or its equivalent so that these can be taken as loan for some of the states that are complaining about payment of salaries.

“The Federal Government has, however, not given out any bailout yet. But we have been deliberating on how best the intervention will be done quickly so that we will be able to settle the issue of salaries and other operations of government in the country.”

According to him, the resolutions reached at the meeting were:

To discuss with Mr. President to seek lasting solutions to the worsening macroeconomic challenges confronting the nation, especially on foreign exchange stability. The forum pledges to work with Mr. President to ensure coherent policy actions that will create a clear policy direction for the country and stimulate domestic production and to collaborate with the Federal Government to ensure that the National Health Act is operational and the on percent funding for primary health care is provided for in the budget.

Buhari Set To Reduce Ministries From 42 To 19, Merge EFCC With ICPC And Scrape 50 Govt Agencies(Report)

 President Muhammadu Buhari is said to have accepted the recommendation of the transition committee to slash the number of ministries from the present 42 to 19 with a view to saving cost and making them more effective and responsive to the needs of Nigerians.

 Many of the ministries have also been merged to ensure proper coordination of duties and ensure greater efficiency and service delivery.

 This development comes after three weeks of consultations with international and Nigeria’s political leaders

 According to Vanguard, a presidency source said that the number of  Federal Government departments and agencies had also been trimmed in line with the policy of the administration.

 Effectively, it means that no fewer than 50 of the MDAs that were not backed by relevant laws might be scrapped and their staff moved into relevant departments to save cost.

 The Presidency source hinted,”But the point being made is that relevant MDAs that will exist under the present administration must be those backed by laws.

 “What that means is that the era of doing things the wrong way to please certain persons in positions of power is over.”

 Shedding light on some of the ministries that had been merged, the official pointed out that the Ministry of Aviation and relevant agencies had been subsumed with Inland Waterways and associated agencies.

 Similarly, the Ministry of Agriculture has been merged with that of Water Resources under what the  Presidency source described as the consolidation of larger ministries.

 It was learnt that under the administration of Buhari, only 19 ministers and 17 ministers of state would operate as opposed to the previous arrangement where there were at least 42.

 It was further gathered that some ministries would be run by senior ministers while others would be manned by junior ministers to save cost.

 On the fight against corruption, the source disclosed to Vanguard that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is to be merged with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, to tackle graft in a new way that would be prompt, fearless and decisive.

 A top source also said Buhari was expected to make some key appointments this week so as to get the machinery of his administration running.

I Didn’t Mean To Kill My Childhood Friend -17-year-old Girl Laments

 Life for Chiemeriem Benjamin, 17, who had a dream of becoming a banker, has come to a temporary halt as she accidentally killed her childhood friend, Lawrence Oloruntobi, during a minor disagreement.

 The incident, which took place at Iba area of Lagos, has opened a scary new phase of life for the teenager, who hails from Abia State.

Chiemeriem told Vanguard:

“Lawrence is my friend; we grew up together and have lived in the same environment from as far back as I can remember. On that day, I was just not in the mood to talk with him. When I came out in the morning, he tried to make some jokes, which we would ordinarily laughed about. But I told him I was not interested in such. 

 I went out later that day and on my way back, I saw him forcing my younger brother to play in a stagnant body of water in front of our compound. My brother was crying out for help, because he did not want to be dragged into the water. I quickly walked up to Lawrence to stop him. He took it personal and told me he would slap me. 

 Out of anger, I told him that even his mother would not dare slap me. He then went in to get a cane, which has always been his tradition whenever we are having a misunderstanding. I also rushed into our room to grab a knife. But my elder brother and a neighbour, called Iya Ayo, intervened and settled the matter.”

According to the 17-year-old, Senior Secondary 1 student:

“About two hours later, Lawrence came back to meet me, threatening to deal with me. We started exchanging words, which later culminated in a fight. I went in and grabbed another knife just to threaten him. 

 Unfortunately, while my elder brother, who intervened again, was trying to plead with Lawrence not to fight with me because I am a girl, I angrily stabbed Lawrence in the chest with the knife. 

 It was only after my action that I realized what I had done. I started calling out for help because I was very scared. Few neighbours, who were around, responded and we quickly rushed him to a nearby hospital, but it was too late. He died. 

 Sincerely, I never meant to kill him with the knife. I only wanted to threaten him, but I just do not know how and why I stabbed him.”

 Vanguard learned that the case, which is currently being investigated by operatives in the homicide section of Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, would soon be charged to court.

We Can’t Raise The Ransom, Kidnapped Boys’ Parents Lament

 The parents of the three boys who were kidnapped by their nanny, Mary Akinloye, last Wednesday, have lamented their inability to raise the N13m ransom demanded by the kidnappers for the release of their children.

 PUNCH Metro learnt that the kidnappers refused to reduce the money, and insisted the ransom must be paid or they would kill the children. A family source, who pleaded not to be named, told their correspondent yesterday Monday that the family was in disarray.

He said:

 “The family has been thrown into an untold trauma. As of Friday last week, my brother received a text message and the kidnappers threatened to waste the children if the N13m was not paid within 24 hours. 

Their mother is a shadow of her old self. She is devastated. She loves all her children no doubt, but she is concerned more about 11-months-old Aderomola. She never ceases to call out to him everyday, wondering what type of food he was being fed with. During one of the conversations, she was allowed to speak with the children who claimed they were being taken care of. But the issue now is how to raise the requested amount.”

On his part, father of the abducted children, Leke, said the family was still struggling to raise the money.

He said:

 “We are still trying to raise the money. They have not shifted ground. The amount is still what they demanded (N13 m). My wife is devastated at the moment and we are praying and hoping that we would be able to reunite with our children soon.”

When contacted, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Kenneth Nwosu, said investigation into the abduction was still ongoing, adding that efforts were on to rescue the children as early as possible.

Shocking : Young Man Beheads VIO For Seizing His Cell Phone

 The police in Ekiti have arrested one Wale Ede, 25, for allegedly beheading a 50-year-old Vehicle Inspection Officer and father of seven, Joshua Fagbola.

 Fagbola, a patrol assistant with the Directorate of Road Traffic Service, otherwise known as the Vehicle Inspection Officer, in Ado Ekiti, met his untimely death at the wake of a relative on Friday at about 8pm in the Iro quarters of Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.

It was learnt that Ede attacked Fagbola when he was about to start the engine of his motorbike and leave the venue of the wake.

The deceased had on Thursday reportedly seized the cell phone of his suspected killer when he failed to supply the brick block for which he had been paid.

An eye witness said Ede, on sighting the VIO at the wake, had rushed home to fetch a machete and inflicted cuts on the deceased’s neck and other parts of the body.

The Ekiti Police Public Relations Officer, Alberto Adeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident to PUNCH on Sunday. He said that the suspect was being held at the Criminal Investigation Department at the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti.

 “The suspect attacked the deceased from behind at the wake and almost cut his head off. It was reported that the deceased had on Thursday seized the suspect’s cell phone for failing to provide the blocks he had paid him for.

“The suspect is being held at the state CID and we are still investigating the matter,” Adeyemi said.

Tragic : 9 Women Burn To Death In Bayelsa, After Visiting The First Lady

 Several women from Bayelsa State were on Friday Feb. 13th burnt to death in multiple vehicle accident after visiting the first lady Dame Patience Jonathan.

 According to the The Nation, the accident occurred at Ahoada, in Rivers State and involved a Toyota Sienna car, an SUV and a bus with the inscription, Peoples Democratic Party Women Initiative.

 A security source put the number of burnt victims at 20 adding that all the occupants of the bus perished.

 The source who spoke in confidence said: “The affected women were traveling in the bus which went up in flames. They were burnt to ashes. Only one of the women was rescued.”

It was learnt that the women paid a solidarity visit to the first lady in Okirika where they spent two days.

 The Bayelsa State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Vincent Jack confirmed the accident.

 He, however, said only nine persons burnt to death, two died without being burnt while many others were rushed to Madonna clinic in the area.

 He explained that the accident occurred when the tyre of the Toyota Sienna burst and rammed into the bus carrying the women.

 He said the SUV also rammed into the bus in confusion, a situation that made the bus to go up in flames.

Corpses Of Two Students Found Floating In River

 The Corpses of two students of Ifeolu Secondary School, Osogbo, were yesterday found floating on River Osun by a woman who had gone to fetch water.

The incident threw the people of Ijetu area of the town into confusion.

 Though what led to the death of the students could not be ascertained at press time, a resident of the area told Vanguard the woman, on discovering the corpses, dropped her bucket and ran to the street, where she raised an alarm.

Based on her action, the case was reported to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and a rescue team from the agency was immediately deployed to the scene.

 A source told Vanguard that the students had gone missing since Monday and their parents had been looking for them, adding that the parents were said to have broken down in tears on seeing the corpses of their children.

The pupils were identified as Samson Obasanjo, a student of Junior Secondary School 2, while the second boy, who was identified simply as Kabiru, was also in the same class as Obasanjo. Source

Gunmen Storm Ashaka Cement Factory, Steal Dynamites

 According to reports, the largest cement factory in Northern Nigeria has been raided. The raid happened on Tuesday in Gombe and it is suspected to be from Boko Haram members. 

 They were said to have made away with eight truck loads of dynamites which the cement factory uses for its quarry work. This development is however alarming because the stolen  dynamites can be

used to create more explosives that can wreck more havoc.

An employee, Amadu Wunti, in his words confirmed the incident saying:

 “They [the militants] pulled out after the raid. They did not hurt or kidnap anyone. But they took eight company vehicles and lots of dynamite used in quarry work. The attackers, which included young women, broke into the store and loaded dynamite into the vehicles and drove off.”

Strange Times : Another 'Witch' Reportedly Caught In Abuja(See Photo)

 Could these women really be witches or just mentally unstable? According to reports, a naked woman/witch was seen stranded on the roof of a church, the All Christian Fellowship church, just before Kubwa village market around 6:30 this morning(pictured above).

 A large crowd of course gathered and managed to bring her down. When she was brought down, they said she was naked, wretched looking, unkempt hair, skinny and was talking non stop. A few people in the crowd recognized her as an akara seller in the area.

 They dragged her to the Kubwa Phase 4 police station where she's currently being detained.

Sudanese Ambassador To Nigeria Reportedly Dies In Abuja

 Sudanese ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Tagelsir Ali, is dead. The Media Advisor to the Sudanese embassy in Nigeria, Mr Mohammed Abdulrahman, who confirmed his death told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that Dr Ali died in the early hours of today October 24th at the National Hospital, Abuja where he was being treated for malaria.

 “He had malaria. There were some complications and he passed away around 1 a.m. early this morning. There is a Presidential jet coming by 5 p.m. to take the remains to Sudan for burial.

 He was 66 years old. He loved working in Nigeria and had zeal to develop the bilateral relationship between Sudan and Nigeria and was able to stretch himself very well,” Abdulrahman said. May his soul rest in peace. Amen!!!

"Why I Abandoned My Kids For 8 Years" – Father Finally Comes Out To Speak

  Mr. Segun Adepegba, the father of the three children abandoned in a boarding school for eight years in Ogun State, has finally come out of hiding.

 Two days ago, PUNCH had made public a report that Mr. Segun abandoned his 3 children - Seun, 14, Titilola 13, and Seyi, 10, since 2007 at Solid Rock Model College in Abule-Iroko. For many years, the school authorities had been trying to reach Adepegba to no avail. The proprietor of the school, Mr Samuel Ayegbusi, said any time he called Adepegba and he realised it was him, he would switch off his phones.

 Adepegba has now bowed to pressure but says hardship pushed him to the wall and that was why he could not take care of his children. Recounting his ordeal in a telephone interview with PUNCH Metro, Adepegba said “life has been very tough for me”:

“In 2007, my wife and I had a misunderstanding and she told me she was leaving me. I was frustrated and the children were little. Seyi, the youngest was just two years while Titilola was just five. There was no way I could give them motherly care. I had no job. As a man, I needed someone to help me take care of them and that was why my sister suggested that we enrol them in a boarding school.” 

 Adepegba said that when the children’s bills kept accumulating and he had no means of paying, he was afraid that if he came to the school, the proprietor would get him arrested.

He continued:

“I feared that if I suddenly appeared at the school, the proprietor would get the police to arrest me. I really appreciate the proprietor of Solid Rock Model College, for coming to my rescue and accepting the responsibility to help me take care of my children. The truth is this: I was pushed to the wall. I didn’t want my children to be beggars on the street. 

“All these years, I have been jobless. I had no house to live in. I was putting up with someone. I just rented a one-room apartment and just got a job. I am not a wicked father. I really miss them but I am gradually overcoming the challenges I have been facing. I did not abandon them in that sense. I can assure you that before the week runs out, I will visit them.”

 Asked whether his wife had called him about how the children were doing, Adepegba said since she left him in 2007, he had not heard from her.

 “The last time we saw each other was probably in 2007 when she left me. I have been trying to reach her but my search has not been fruitful. I heard that she is somewhere in the northern part of the country,” he said. 

However, the school proprietor told PUNCH Metro that the school authorities had no intention of getting Adepegba arrested for his debt. He said he reported the matter to the Ogun State Police Command because he was fed up.

He said:

 “I have nothing against Mr Adepegba and I understand his plight. My grievance was that he kept on rejecting my calls and abandoned his children. How could he as a father leave his children for this long? It is not a good thing.” 

 The news of their father’s return has also lifted the heart of his children. The children were all smiles when they were told that their father had promised to return before the end of the week. Speaking with PUNCH Metro on the telephone on Wednesday, Seun, the eldest of the trio said:

“I am very happy that daddy has promised to come back. It means I would not have to spend my holidays in the school again.”

Titilola added:

“I hope this is not another promise that will fail. I am really looking forward to seeing him because it will make me very happy.” Source

Law School Speak On Mass Failure Of Students In Latest Exam

 The authority of the Nigerian Law School have spoken out about the recent mass failure of students of the school.

 The students embarked on a protest last week claiming that over 3,000 of them failed the 2013/2014 exams. The highest failure the Nigerian Law School has witnessed. 

 Reacting to the protest, the Secretary to the Council of the Legal Education and Director of Administration of Nigeria Law School, Mrs. E.O Max-Uba, who spoke with PM News, said the students lied, that only 1,000 failed and it was mostly those who were retaking the exams after failing multiple times. She claimed that 57.01% of those who wrote the exam passed.

 A document made available to PM NEWS indicated that a total of 5841 regular candidates registered for the examination in the 2013/2014 academic year across the six campuses of the Law School. A further breakdown of the performance revealed that four students made 1st Class Honours while 96 students passed in the Second Class (Upper Division).

620 of them passed in the Second Class (Lower Division) while 2610 or 44.68 per cent of the students recorded ordinary pass. Also, 501 students recorded conditional pass because they have reference in one subject while 1932 students failed the examination.

 However, the failure rate was high among the re-sit candidates with about 1168 out of 1335 students who registered failing the examinations while 88 students recorded ordinary pass. Also, 26 of the re-sit students recorded conditional pass.

Mrs. Max Uba told PM NEWS that the failure rate was high among the re-sit students because some of them are either working or based outside the country.

Mrs Max-Uba said the ongoing protest is being led by some of the re-sit students that have sat for the examinations four times without success because they refused to participate in revision classes organised for them prior to the examinations. She dismissed claims that the Director General of the Law School, Prof was behind the failure recorded.

On whether the results will be reviewed, she said any candidate may apply for review in accordance with extant rules of the Council for Legal Education. She also stated that a resit would be conducted for those who failed the exams next year.

Heavy Explosion Hits Edo State

 According to NAN, an explosion rocked a residential estate in Benin, the Edo State capital Saturday, the state police command said Sunday.

 The State's Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Ejiroro Ahwara, confirmed the attack on Denis Osadebey Avenue, in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin on Sunday.

 He said the “Command received information that at about 10: 30 p.m. on Saturday that there was an explosion at Dennis Osadebey Avenue, Benin City.’’

Mr. Ahwara said that men of the Special Anti-Bomb Squad and patrol vehicles were immediately drafted to the scene of incident.

He explained that preliminary investigation revealed that items suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device, IED, made up of two tiger batteries of 15 volt each connected to long wire, was thrown into the mini-estate from outside.

Mr. Ahwara said the explosion affected the ceiling boards at the security post in the estate as well as a part of the main gate.

He explained that the impact dug a small hole at the entrance gate, but stated that “luckily, no life was lost”.

“The IED used in the attack has been recovered by the Bomb Disposal Unit for analysis, while some suspects have been arrested”, he further stated.

Police Arrest 35-yr-old Man For Infecting 12-yr-old Girl With HIV

 Bauchi State Police, on Tuesday, October 14th, arrested a 35-year-old man for infecting a 12-year-old girl with HIV.

 This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Haruna Mohammed, in a press statement he made available to journalists in Bauchi, on Thursday, saying the man had been HIV positive and on medication since 2004.

 According to the statement, the suspect had been having series of sexual intercourse with the girl, who is a groundnut hawker, repeatedly since 2012, adding that the girl was diagnosed with the disease when she started having strange symptoms.

 ''On the 14/10/2014 at about 17:30hrs, one Sabo Korau, male and 35-year-old of Unguwan Dawaki, Dass Local Government Area of Bauchi State was arrested for having series of sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old girl repeatedly since 2012,until now when victim began to show sign of strange symptoms. She was taken to the hospital and was diagnosed HIV positive," Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) stated.

He further informed that police's preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect took advantage of the girl being a groundnut hawker, adding that the case was under investigation, while the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded.
