74 yr old woman, fought crazy knifeman as he stabbed her six times

A hero pensioner has told how a silent prayer gave her the strength to fight off a knife-wielding maniac who stabbed her six times at a bus stop in a random attack.Tiny Maria Morrison, 74, felt her life ebbing away as David Walters screamed ‘Die! Die!’ during the frenzied, unprovoked assault.

However, after saying a prayer Maria was able to push her attacker away.Walters fled and Maria managed to get help. She was rushed to hospital, and was treated for stab wounds to her back, hand, and mouth. Now for the first time she has relived the horror attack at a bus stop in Arrowfield Road, near Southern Cemetery in Chorlton, Greater Manchester. She said: ‘I had just sat down when something came at me. I didn’t realise what it was. He was slashing at me.’

By instinct she put her right hand up as Walters tried to stab her in the neck. The knife went into her hand, causing terrible injuries, and the force of the blow also cut her lip as she tried to protect her face.Maria said: ‘I tried to escape. But he grabbed me by the shoulder and put me against the fence of the cemetery.

I thought I was dying. The knife was a millimetre from my neck. I thought I can’t hold on any more, I can’t fight it. My leg was shivering and I was cold. I felt like my body was giving up.
Then something came into my mind - I don’t know where it came from. I held his hand as hard as I could. I knew then I wasn’t on my own, because I said ‘please God help me’ and he did.‘I was very weak but I found strength. It was like someone was pushing me to hold him off. I felt like I was dying but after I got hold of him he went away.

I said ‘God thank you’ because no way could I have done that on my own.’Walters fled, leaving Maria badly injured. She managed to stagger to a neighbour’s house, then flagged down a passing car.Maria, from Chorlton, said: ‘I was taken into hospital and the doctors and nurses were waiting for me. A doctor said they would wait until the day after for my operation on my hand.

‘I thought ‘Oh my God, am I going to get through the night?’ Walters, of Vixen Close, has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and will be sentenced on April 2 at Manchester Crown Court.
