No fewer than 13 soldiers cheated death, yesterday, in multiple road accidents that occurred at Kobape area, on Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway, Ogun State, leaving two civilians dead.
The injured soldiers, according to the findings were hurriedly taken to hospital along with other people for urgent medical attention.
Vanguard gathered that, the incident which happened about 1:pm, involved three vehicles,when a white Toyota Hiace bus conveying the soldiers veered off its lane after one of the vehicle tyres burst.
An eye witness told Vanguard that the bus with number plate Lagos CG 415 FKJ rammed into an oncoming truck with number plate Ogun XB 170 ABG.
The truck driver, who was simply identified as ‘Nasco,’ was said to be on his way from Abeokuta to Ibiade in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state when he met his untimely death.
The eye witness further said that the truck subsequently hit a Toyota Prado SUV, with number plate Lagos EJ 57 LND, travelling on the same lane.
It was learnt that the military men were returning to Abeokuta after attending an undisclosed assignment in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
They were said to have been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta and when Vanguard visited the accident scene, officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, and some sympathisers were seen trying to recover the remains of the dead driver who was trapped behind the wheels.
A middle-aged man, who identified himself as the motor assistant to the deceased said they were transporting medical supplies from Abeokuta when the bus suddenly crashed into their truck.
One of the survivors, Josephine Ojo, told Vanguard that she was inside the SUV with two other occupants when the incident happened, attributing the incident to the high speed of the bus conveying the soldiers.
According to her, “We were heading to Lagos from Abeokuta when the bus conveying the soldiers suddenly veered off the lane and swerved to our own side of the road.
“The bus collided with the truck which in turn swerved to our side and rammed into our vehicle. It was a miraculous escape for us.”
An official of FRSC, who spoke with Vanguard at the accident scene, disclosed that an unidentified woman, who was also inside the truck, had been taken to an undisclosed hospital after sustaining injuries in the crash.
The official added that efforts were on to tow the vehicles away from the scene.
When the FMC Public Relations Officer, Segun Orisajo, was contacted on the fate of those that were taken to the hospital, he confirmed the accident, saying “some soldiers were brought in this afternoon and they are being attended to.”
