Hosni Mubarak sentenced to life in prison


Hosni Mubarak has been sentenced to life imprisonment by an Egyptian court.The former Egyptian president was charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the killing of 225 anti-government demonstrators and wounding of more than 1,800 between 25 and 31 January last year.
Nearly 900 protesters were killed during the 18-day popular uprising pushed that Mubarak from power in February 2011, ending his 30-year rule.

On the final day of six months of hearings, the 84-year-old former president refused to address the court.

The deposed Egyptian president was wheeled into court on Saturday to hear the verdict in the case against him on charges of corruption and ordering the killing of protesters last year.

His two sons, Gamal and Alaa, who are standing trial on corruption charges, also arrived in the court, where they stood alongside their father in the cage reserved for defendents.

Both his sons were cleared of corruption charges.

Mubarak's former interior minister, Habib el-Adli, also charged over the deaths of protesters, was also among the defendants in the cage.
