Contrary to what the Nigeria Police spokesperson told Nigerians last week, credible legal luminaries have insisted that there is more than enough evidence to prosecute and convict the embattled chairman of the House of Reps committee on Fuel Subsidy scam, Farouk Lawan.
Newsmen gathered that Justice Mustapha Akanbi, former Chairman of the ICPC and Prince Bola Ajibola, former Attorney General of the Federation, have said no one should deceive Nigerians with the false impression that there is no evidence.
They said the country's Penal Code is there to aid them with what they already have to drag Farouk to court and secure conviction.
While Justice Akanbi, a former President of the Court of Appeal, said Lawan should be charged based on his confessional statement with the police that he collected the money from Mr. Femi Otedola, Prince Ajibola said the “court could force Lawan to bring out the money.”
“I am sure his statement is with the police.
If he did admit receiving the money, without making other statements, that statement is enough. They can hold him to what he has said. It is an admission that he received corrupt money" Justice Aknbi said.
“The law has all the provisions in the Criminal Act. If the police are prepared to do their job, they can do so," said Prince Ajibola.
The two legal giants spoke in separate interviews with ThePunch against the background of the drama between Farouk and the Police Special Task Force investigating the $620,000 bribe.
It would be recalled that Farouk and one Boniface Emenalo had collected $620,000 from Otedola to remove the name of his company, Zenon Oil, from a list of marketers that secured FOREX for fuel import but never applied it accordingly.
