Robbers, not terrorists, behind Nigeria mosque killing'

The Nigeria police have said Sunday morning's attack on Muslim worshipers by gunmen in Dogon Dawa village in the country's northern Kaduna state, which left at least 21 people dead and many others injured, was likely perpetrated by armed robbers.

'We are suspecting a reprisal attack by a gang of armed robbers who lost some of their members after a recent raid on their hideout by the combined effort of the police, villagers and some vigilance group (in the village),' the local media quoted the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, as saying in Kaduna, the state capital.

He said the poor telecommunications network in the area, located some 120 kms from Kaduna, had prevented him from getting the full details of the attack, but promised to reveal more details when the officers he dispatched there returns to the state capital.

The police boss' statement effectively ruled out speculations that the killing was perpetrated by the Islamic sect Boko Haram, which has been active in the state and its environs.

During the attack, several gunmen fired on the worshipers as they were returning from the mosque where they had gone for their early morning prayers.
