Two buses collided head-on and burst into flames in northern Nigeria’s Yobe state on Friday, k*lling at least 29 people, police said. “Two Toyota Hiace Buses… travelling in opposite directions had a head-on collision and thereafter went off in flames.

Twenty nine persons — eleven of them burnt beyond recognition — have so far been confirmed dead,” national police spokesman Frank Mba said in a statement, adding that 16 people were also injured.

Kogi State Lays Claim To Anambra's Oil Well

As President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday inaugurated the first oil refinery in Anambra State, the Kogi State government stepped forward same day to stake a claim to the oil wells that will serve the refinery. President Jonathan opened the refinery being built by Orient Petroleum at Aguleri Otu in Anambra East local government area and declared Anambra an oil producing state.

But moments later across the border in Kogi State, Governor Idris Wada said in a statement: “Kogi will be a major stake holder in the refinery, considering the fact the oil wells that will service the refinery are in Odeke Community in Ibaji Local Government Area of the state.”

Wada made the claim in a statement issued from the office of his deputy Yomi Awoniyi, a day after a community group issued a public notice saying that the oil deposits claimed by Anambra State are within the Odeke community of Kogi State. Governor Wada said in the statement yesterday that the state “is doing everything humanly possible to resolve the issues surrounding the location of the oil wells with the contending states.”

The statement ended on a note of optimism: “Kogi State will soon join the league of oil producing states in the country.” But speaking yesterday at the ceremony to kick-start his company’s oil refinery in Anambra State, Orient Petroleum chairman Chief Emeka Anyaoku said the controversy over ownership of the oil deposits has been resolved and that the ‘bulk’ of the deposits are within Anambra territory.

He however added that any state where oil was found and drilled by Orient Petroleum would be accorded due recognition. “There was misconception that the oil well was not entirely in Anambra, that has been resolved through the map of Nigeria. Let me quickly state that the two oil blocks encompassed parts of Enugu, Kogi, Delta and Edo states but bulk of it is in Anambra,” Anyaoku said.

He said in addition to the private shareholders, other bodies that have shares in the company include Anambra, Rivers, Kogi and the 21 local government areas of the state. Speaking at the commissioning of the refinery, President Jonathan said the Federal Government was committed to oil exploration in all the sedimentary basins and commended the oil company for pioneering the inland crude oil production in the country.

“The good news is not Orient Oil and Anambra basin alone, the good news is for all our sedimentary basins all over the country,” Jonathan said. He said it would give confidence to other investors to invest in other inland sedimentary basins. Jonathan urged operators in the oil industry, especially those at the upstream sector, not to think only about exporting crude oil but should also add value to it and export refined products.

“We have a lot of gas resources in Anambra Basin from meteorological records,” he said. “Orient Petroleum has helped us not just in producing the crude oil but adding value to the crude oil. As a nation, we should not continue to think that we will be exporting crude oil materials abroad.

“The vision of Orient to diversify into refining and power generation, among others is the way to go. People who refine crude oil make more money than us who export the crude commodity,” he added. Anyaoku said crude refining by the company would commence by next year, and that when the refining facility was completed about 20,000 litres of crude would be refined daily.

In his remarks, Governor Peter Obi, assured that he would continue to partner with the company to develop the oil sector of the state. ‘The oil belongs to Kogi’ Meanwhile, a group called Ibaji Development Association (IDA) warned that the oil wells OPL 915 and 916 are located in Kogi and not Anambra State as claimed by Orient Petroleum which is carrying out exploration in the area.

In a message to President Jonathan ahead of his visit to the area yesterday, IDA said “the area where the current productive oil well is located is in Odeke community in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi state and not in Anambra State.”

“Oil exploration activities leading to the successful access to crude oil were carried out in Kogi state within Odeke, Echeno, Ehile, Anocha and Omabo communities by Orient Petroleum Plc. Workers of this company actually rented houses in these communities as quarters for their staff for the final phase 1 of oil well production testing of these wells.

Phase 2 is due at the end of September 2012 in Uchuchu, Ikah, Iregwu and Ujeh also within Ibaji local government area of Kogi state,” the group said. IDA said Ibaji area was in conflict with the people of Agulere and Otuocha in Anambra State over ownership of the oil wells since 1994 which led to loss of lives and property.

The association called on President Jonathan to officially declare Kogi as an oil producing state saying “our non-resistant stance should not be misconstrued to mean cowardice, even in the face of glaring provocation from Anambra state, whose communities are already head over heels over the benefits of the oil wells that do not belong to them.”

President Barrack Obama Vs Revelation 13:15-18 (A "MUST READ" FOR ALL)

President Obama Vs Revelation 13:15-18

The US Senate has passed the Obama Health Care' bill into law. The implementation would commence on 23/03/ 2013.This bill would require all Americans to be implanted with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip in order to access medical care.

The device will be implanted on the forehead or on the arm. This is to fulfill the prophesy in the Book of Revelation 13:15-18 concerning the MARK OF THE BEAST! Are you still in doubt concerning the ENDTIME? GET READY!

The rapture is near!
Be prepared so you are not caught unaware. Live a good life, pray
more, preach the GOSPEL to others and save souls.

Revelations 13 is being played out right before us.

Many are still unaware.

(1) Why is the chip being implanted exactly where the Bible
says it would be. Why on the hand and forehead. Why not anywhere else?

(2) Why is it being connected to your bank account?

Remember the Bible says you won't be able to buy or sell without the mark. And guess what! The chip is connected to your financial details. What breaks my heart the most is that many people in the church will not make it if Jesus comes now? Many are unaware that the end is near.

Don't tell me that its a developed world process, technology or
something fancy. If any area of your life is not in sync with God's
word, its time to make a quick u-turn NOW...

Repent and be converted. If you miss heaven you can never miss hell...think about it.

Hell is not a pretty place, the worst part is that it is for eternity...Please rather than post and forward senseless messages and publish those Boko haram's devilish accomplishments, join me to sound the alarm.

Payment To Tompolo,Asari Dokubo And Others Is Illegal

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday said the $ 40 million being paid annually to some ex- militants to guard the country’s pipelines is illegal, unconstitutional and indefensible. National publicity secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement that the main causes of the overheating of the polity today is the reckless manner political power is exercised and monopolised by a few individuals.

He “We state again emphatically that it is totally unacceptable and unconscionable, even unprecedented especially in a fragile federation like ours, for any government to hand over the security of its entire maritime domain to a private firm a group of ex-militants for that matter given the far reaching implications of such a decision for trade, security, ports and shipping of the country.

“What is the agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan in allowing this to happen? Why would a government so willingly abdicate its responsibility of ensuring the security of its maritime domain? What were the ministers thinking when they approved this dangerous memo.”

He added that it is self serving, irresponsible, untenable and illogical to defend the federal government action, saying, “It is outrageous decision to hand over the security of not only our entire maritime domain but also the responsibility of protecting our pipelines to ex-militants. In the first instance a decision as momentous as this ought to have been a subject of rigorous national debate.

The entire transaction lacks transparency and due process and finally it passes a vote of no confidence in our armed forces and security agencies that are constitutionally mandated to provide these services.” He therefore urges the National Assembly to immediately wade into the matter and stop the arrangement due to its national security implications.

Oil companies abandon 26 radioactive sources

Oil companies operating in Nigeria have abandoned at least 26 radioactive sources in the Niger Delta region from year 2000 to 2011, the Nigeria Nuclear Regulators said.

The incidence of abandoned radioactive sources in Nigeria is among the highest in the global oil and gas industry, the regulator said. The oil companies accounted for about 90 percent of radioactive material which made them highest importers of radioactive materials in the country.

“They (oil companies) use radioactive materials in laying pipelines and oil wells drilling among others” said Director of Enforcement at the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), Dr Yau Idris, while speaking yesterday at the 3rd National Workshop for journalists on Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection. Researchers believed that there is high environmental risk associated with radioactive wastes that lead to cancer, injuries and d*ath.

Chelsea fc owner Abramovich faces $6 billion court ruling

After a legal odyssey stretching from the gilded corridors of the Kremlin to the offshore enclaves favoured by Russia’s richest tycoons, Judge Elizabeth Gloster will rule on whether Berezovsky was extorted out his business empire by Abramovich.

Berezovsky, a fast-talking former mathematician who became a Kremlin powerbroker under late President Boris Yeltsin only to fall foul of Vladimir Putin, says Abramovich used the threat of Kremlin retribution to intimidate him into selling out of Russia’s fourth biggest oil company at a knockdown price.

Abramovich, the world’s 68th richest man with a $12.1 billion fortune, denies that and says he merely paid Berezovsky money for political cover and protection – known in Russian bandit slang as “krysha” or “roof”. “I am a genetic optimist but I shall not say anything more until we see the verdict,” Berezovsky told Reuters by telephone on Tuesday.

Judge Gloster will spend about an hour reading out a summary of the decision at the High Court’s modern Rolls Building, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The final judgment will be published after September 17. Abramovich spokesman John Mann declined to comment until the ruling was handed down, though either party could appeal in the case, which has cost tens of millions of pounds in legal fees.

Besides the personal drama of a public battle between two of Russia’s most dazzling businessmen, one of the biggest private litigation cases in the world has detailed the treacherous business world of post-Soviet Russia: Ownership means nothing, offshore cash is king and while Yeltsin granted favoured tycoons control over the oil and metals producers of a former superpower, President Putin can wrestle assets back from errant oligarchs no matter how powerful.

Cynthia's murder: Press release from the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria

This concerns the two pharmacists arrested in connection with Cynthia Osokogu's murder. Read it below

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) joins millions of Nigerians to empathize with the family of the late Cynthia Osokogu who was lured by friends she met on facebook to Lagos where she was brutalized and eventually k*lled.

We also commend the Nigeria Police for the professional investigation that led to the arrest of the two young men who admitted openly to have committed the heinous crime.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) is interested in a diligent and focused investigation of this murder which continues to attract so much interest from Nigerians to the extent that all found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law, while innocent people are not unjustly arraigned, prosecuted and punished.

We note with concern the arraignment of two young Pharmacists who were charged along with the confessed suspects for rape, armed robbery, murder and administering of obnoxious substances. These are weighty charges that reflect the gravity of the offences that led to the d*ath of this promising lady. We at Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) indeed perceive this loss as a great one to the Osokogus, friends, colleagues and all Nigerians.

The PSN after a critical appraisal of all issues at stake wishes to reflect thus:
1) Pharmacists as responsible professionals and as legitimate custodians of medicines would continue to champion safe, responsible and rational use of medicines in Nigeria. Our projects and programmes in the last few years have always been geared towards the promotion of safe use of medicines. Having said this, it is important to realize that all medicines are poisons with inherent tendencies for abuse and misuse.

Pharmacists have always exercised due diligence, caution and professional judgment in dispensing and sales of medicines. But beyond this, it is difficult to know what a person intends to do or does with the medicine after purchase especially for a premeditated criminal act that involved use of chains, padlocks, tape and other dangerous weapons.

Information available to us indicate:
a. Pharmacist Chukwunonso Maduakor was on duty in Oxpharm in the morning of Monday August 20, 2012. A gentleman approached him and requested to buy Rohypnol. Nonso asked him for a prescription and he said he does not have one. The gentleman begged and pleaded with him that he really needed it with paracetamol.

Pharm. Nonso considered his request on compassionate grounds and dispensed to him one (1) card of 10 tablets of flunitrazapam along with one (1) card of Paracetamol. The gentleman goes out of the pharmacy, and then came in again with other persons, arrested Nonso and accused him of selling drug without prescription. They then took him to the Police station, he made statement and was detained for six (6) days in Festac Police Area Command.

On the 7th day they transferred him to Panti from where he was taken to a Magistrate Court and was charged for conspiracy, murder, armed robbery, rape and administering obnoxious substances to Miss Cynthia Osokogu who was k*lled by two known persons a month earlier in July 2012.

b. The second Pharmacists, Pharm. Osita Orji is a Locum Pharmacist with Oxpharm and works evening shifts. The police visited Oxpharm on 21 August 2012 and requested to see Osita. When he got to the station, they alleged that he was the Pharmacist on duty when the suspected killer of Cynthia claimed they bought Rohypnol from Oxpharm. Osita made statement that he did not know the murderers, could not recall meeting them or selling Rohypnol to them and if they ever bought the Rohypnol from him while on duty that they must have presented him with a prescription. Osita was detained in Festac Police Area Command for two (2) days, then transferred to Panti from where he was taken to a Magistrate Court and charged

2) If the liability of the two pharmacists is limited to the sales or alleged sales of rohypnol to clients they do not know and never collaborated with in this condemnable crime then it is logical to believe that at best there might have been breaches of professional ethics. The law provides that such matters are dealt with by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria a regulatory agency of the Federal Government established by Cap. P.17 LFN 2004.

3) The drug in question Rohypnol is an intermediate acting benzodiazepam similar to diazepam (valium), nitrazepam (swidon) and bromazepam (lexotan).

Rohypnol is the brand name of the medicine flunitrazepam and is one of the benzodiazepine class of sedatives or tranquilizer drugs, of which valium or diazepam is perhaps the best known. It is used in the management of anxiety and sleep disorders (short term treatment of insomnia).

Rohypnol is made by Roche in Switzerland, registered with NAFDAC (Reg. No: 04 ? 0150) and distributed in Nigeria by Swipha Nigeria Ltd. It is not a rare drug as being reported. It is available in Nigeria.

4) The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) counsels Nigerians to monitor the use of internet facilities by youths and children particularly because of volume and nature of information available.

5) We urge the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution in the Ministry of Justice in Lagos State to immediately review the cases of these pharmacists with a view to advising the relevant authorities on how best to tackle this matter and to ensure that the innocent is not persecuted albeit unjustly.

CONCLUSION
Gentlemen of the Press, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) assures Nigerians that it will continue to work with stakeholders including relevant regulatory agencies to evolve a National Strategy that will improve the use of medicines in Nigeria. In line with this, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has dedicated September 25, 2012 to continue the dialogue on safe medicines by collaborating with the National Human Rights Commission, Regulatory Agencies, Media and other stakeholders.

One of the salient lessons inherent in the discourse is that our youth while trusting must verify the relationship they make through the social media given the abuse potential.

Once again, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the entire Osokogu family. We pray that God will grant the family the fortitude to bear this loss.

Thank you.

This 3 Year Old Girl Was R*ped At Adeniji Adele Lagos Yesterday(PHOTOS)

This incident happened yesterday afternoon at Adeniji Adele, Dolphin Estate, Phase 2. A little girl ran into a woman's shop crying. The woman asked her why she was crying, but the little girl couldn't really express herself.

She just kept pointing at a particular direction, and crying. Then a few minutes later, the shop owner saw a man approaching her shop and calling on the girl to follow him.

The woman asked the man who he was and why he was after the girl. The man probably realized the women wasn't going to release the girl to him, so he tried to run. The woman raised an alarm immediately shouting ole ole, thinking he was a kidnapper, not knowing he had done something much worse.
THE RAPIST
Youths in the area thinking the man was a thief descended on him. The man kept saying he wasn't a thief that the little girl was known to him.

They turned to the girl and pressured her to tell them what the guy had done to her; the 3 year old told them that the man had taken her to the last floor of a 3 story building and hurt her.

They checked the girl's panties and saw blood all over her priv*te area. The blood had even dropped to her legs but nobody noticed on time.
THE POLICE CAME TO ARREST HIM
On hearing this, the youths descended on him once again, this time more brutal. They stripped him n**ked, and beat him with stick, stones, bottles, etc until someone called the police who then took the man away.

Jonathan Pledges Revitalisation Of Railway System

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday in Onitsha, Anambra, said plans were underway to open up other River Ports and revitalise the railway system across the country. Jonathan made this known while inaugurating the rehabilitated Onitsha River Port in Anambra.

He said the measure would help in the transportation of goods and services through water and reduce the overuse of land in conveying heavy goods across the nation. “We noticed that transporting heavy goods on land help make our roads tear and get bad by the day. “So when rail system and water transportation are revitalised, it will reduce the use of land in transporting heavy goods across the country,” he said. Jonathan said he was happy with the security situation in the zone.

He commended the Chairman of Orange Drugs Groups, Chief Tony Ezenna, for building a gigantic soap manufacturing industry in the commercial city of Onitsha. He dubbed Ezenna as a partner in progress, while describing SABMiller Breweries as a critical project with great impact on the economic life of the state. In his address, Gov. Peter Obi, said the president’s visit was critical to his administration’s resolve to industrialise the state.

“We have been admitted into the league of oil producing states and we want to assure you that the economy of this state and entire country would receive great boost,” he said. He also said that Onitsha remained the biggest and most important city in the country with very big market in the entire country.

He pointed out that the state was safe for investors and called on other investors to invest in the state, while assuring them of the State Government’s assistance. The Minister of Transport, Sen. Idris Umar, said the port would help reduce the sufferings importers face in the cause of importing their goods.

He said the port would also boost the economic viability of Onitsha in particular and the entire country in general. Umar said his ministry would soon embark on the construction of other river ports across the country and build more railway systems, which he said, would create job and enhance productivity. The Senate Committee Chairman on Maritime, Sen. Zainab Kure, described the ceremony as an epoch making event.

He called for a synergy between the executive arm and the legislature to achieve the desired effect. “History is being made today and we are happy to be part of it, but there are still much to be done in building synergy between executive and legislature. “We must work together in 2013 Budget to ensure that many other ports are built,” she said.

The Group Executive Chairman, Orange Group, Ezenna said the company had fully automated saponification plants with 12 finishing lines to produce raw materials locally for the production of soap. Ezenna thanked Mr President for finding time to be in the state to inaugurate several projects. He said the projects would help reduce the high rate of youth unemployment in the state by providing job opportunities for them.

Ignore Boko-Haram Leaflets & Posters

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in Maiduguri has called on the public to disregard the leaflets and posters being distributed by Boko Haram terrorists urging people not to pass information to the JTF on the locations and activities of the sect.

In a statement issued today by its spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, JTF stressed that the publications are simply part of the propaganda of the terrorists to keep the civil populace in captivity and perpetual fear with a view to unleashing more terror on innocent citizens.

In a separate statement, JTF drew attention to two recent incidents in the area in which, following search operations in which JTF recovered some arms and ammunition, members of Boko Haram arrived at the same market and coerced people to pay compensation for the seizure—without the incident being reported to JTF.

“JTF wishes to alert and warn individuals or group to desist from such unpatriotic acts as both the giver and receiver of such monies would be treated as terrorists and be seriously dealt with,” the statement said, reiterating its commitment to the maintenance of law, order and the protection of lives and properties of law abiding citizens.

It reminded the public that security is a collective responsibility rooted in information sharing and collaboration, and that members of the public can reach JTF on phone numbers 080-64174066, 080-85464012 and 080-54429346.

The oracle and Oshiomhole

THE oracle spoke and Edo people voted in a manner that comprehensively defeated the rivals of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in his race for the second term as governor of Edo State.

In the course of the campaign, the rivals put their reasons why Oshiomhole should not be returned and the articles of John Ainofenohkai - The tragedy of governance in Edo and Callistus Omoregie - Why must Edo people be impoverished" in the Nigerian Tribune of Tuesday, 26 June, 2012, gave the impression that Oshiomhole was a non-performer who should be rejected at the polls.

Of course, the supporters of Oshiomhole also had their stints at claiming that the Edo people have never had it so good. In the propaganda battle, it was even portrayed as if the Oba of Benin, Omo N'Oba Erediauwa, snubbed the President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) delegation that paid a courtesy call on him.

We were later made to understand that the President was received in private because the gods prevented the Oba from receiving the delegation. When the President later addressed the PDP rally, he alluded to an event when the Oba refused to see a former Minister of State for Works who was on an official visit to Edo State on the grounds that government had done nothing about the poor state of roads in the state.

Even at that point in time (June 30, 2012) getting to Benin by road took about seven hours because of the bad stretch between Ore and the Edo State border. So bad was the situation that there were announcements that those travelling to Benin and beyond should avoid that area and instead travel via Akure. Oshiomhole's opponents saw his efforts at improving the roads in Benin area as cosmetic but people saw them as improvements hence they could not be convinced otherwise.

The campaigns also featured the pictorial advertisements of the Edo Agenda Movement which tried to debunk the claim by Oshiomhole's government that Edo is working. Add to this is the publication of Fast Track that opinion polls put PDP ahead of ACN and ANPP in the guber race (Tribune, Tuesday, 10 July, 2012).

Now that the race is over and the postmortem is what follows, it is certain that the Edo people all along had confidence in their Governor though he too was shaken by the PDP propaganda. But what excited me most was the stance of the Oba's Palace that stated that the oracle had spoken in favour of Oshiomhole.

I eagerly awaited the results to see if the oracle might have got it wrong, but, alas, the accuracy of the prediction was such that the PDP as a party easily conceded defeat. What happened is now clear to all: the people of Edo State did not fall for the PDP propaganda and they viewed Oshiomhole as an action governor that is transforming the state.

The likes of Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, Rev. Peter Obadan, Admiral Mike Akhigbe were practical enough to appreciate what Oshiomhole had achieved during his first term. But party loyalty forced them to plod along with the Chieftains when in their heart of hearts they sympathised with Oshiomhole.

Standing by one's conscience is not an act of treachery and this is where I disagree with the submission of Uchechukwu Olisah in his article "How Edo governor election was won and lost". Charles Airhiavbere as the PDP candidate forced the sidelining of people like Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, Kenneth Imansmangbon and Julius Ihonvbere.

Airhiavbere's godfathers might not have calculated the risks of having a retired general as their gubernatorial candidate in a society that is attempting to be as much civilian as it can possibly be. The PDP heavyweights will have to get to the drawing board if they hope to do better in future elections in Edo State and elsewhere as the ACN will capitalise on this victory.

There is no doubt that Oshiomhole has won a landslide having captured the 18 local government areas but he has to look into allegations of reckless spending on projects. Some have accused his administration of construction of roads at an average of one billion naira a kilometre. This should be disproved with facts. In doing so, Oshiomhole will be demonstrating that he is transparent and accountable to the people who have resoundingly expressed a vote of absolute confidence in him.

What really is Fashola doing in Lagos?

Lagos, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria, prides itself as the Centre of Excellence. It is a name that the city preferred to the other, State of Aquatic Splendour, suggested in the earlier days. Notwithstanding the tag Lagos gives itself, no Nigerian or foreigner alike who has to do business in Lagos would deceive himself as to the grim nature of life and living in the congested city.

Besides the ever-present aquatic splendour and the beautiful skyscrapers that dot the landscape of Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki axis, there are the practical slums of Makoko, Ajegunle and other areas fast wearing the toga of notoriety, including Ojuelegba, Mile Two, Mile 12, Ojota and Kirikiri canal.

To residents of the city, life is barely liveable in some areas, including Agege, Iju, Agbado, Akowonjo, Alimosho, Surulere and even Apapa, as residents contend with poor road networks, stifling traffic and unending commotions on the streets and major arteries. To those who experience life in the Nigerian former capital, the report of the survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit in its 2012 Global Liveability index would not come as a surprise.

The report, which surveyed 140 cities of the world, listed Lagos as the 138th, making it the third world’s worst city to live in. According to the report, Lagos actually dropped from the 137th position it held in 2011 to clinch the unenviable slot. Lagos, according to the survey beat Port Moresby which took the 139th position and Dhaka, Bangladesh, which took the 140th position.

In keeping to its standards, the survey x-rays and assesses the best or worst living conditions and scored them on the basis of political and social stability; crime rates and access to quality healthcare; diversity and standard of cultural events; the natural environment; education (school and university); and the standard of infrastructure as well as public transport. It reported that while Lagos and others breathe the rear, Melbourne in Australia, Vienna and Vancouver in Canada ranked the first three.

The report indicated that while Melbourne showcases the best living condition with an overall rating of 97.5. Vienna, Austria and Vancouver, in Canada ranked second and third best cities to live in third. Other notable cities ranked in the survey include Johannesburg and Pretoria, both in South Africa which came 92nd and 96th respectively, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, also shares the 92nd position with Johannesburg, while London, in the United Kingdom is ranked 55th. Expectedly, the report of the survey is being received with mixed feelings in Nigeria.

While those at the political front would easily politicise the report, others in the business line who have particular attachments to the city would also not want such negative projections about the city they do business in. But the facts as provided by the EIU should ordinarily create the avenue for further introspection on the level of service delivery in the Centre of Excellence.

There is the need for proper examination of the deliverables, commonly called dividends of democracy, beyond the media colourations, to determine whether there is actually a backward train as reported by the EIU. Incidentally, Lagos has been under the leadership of the Nigerian acclaimed progressive politicians since the dawn of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic in 1999.

How it all started In 1998, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu was persuaded to contest for the governorship of Lagos by the leaders of Afenifere who, even though they accommodated the late Chief Funsho Williams in the Alliance for Democracy(AD), did not feel comfortable enough to hand over the reins of Lagos to the former civil servant and former Commissioner for Works in the state. Williams had then unarguably emerged the most visible governorship candidate in Lagos, following the structure he had erected as a frontrunner in the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) during the transition programme midwifed by the late General Sani Abacha.

At the start of the General Abdusalami Abubakar-led transition of 1998-1999, the indication was that Tinubu, who only returned from exile shortly after Abacha’s death, would contest the senatorial seat, but the Yoruba elders, under the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, headed by the late Senator Abraham Adesanya, felt Tinubu could do the job as governor of Lagos. They felt that Williams had been tainted by Abacha politics and that the pro-democratic profile of Tinubu during the despotic Abacha years should earn him the governorship seat.

Thus, the gubernatorial primaries of the AD went in a way that showed that Tinubu was clearly favoured and he went ahead to win the election. A great expectation lay ahead of the Tinubu administration in Lagos and many agreed that he started well. There was the promise of the Fourth Mainland bridge, a new hotel concept around the Bar Beach/CMS corridor, the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), mega school projects and reconstruction of major roads.

Within the first anniversary of his administration, Tinubu had inaugurated the Simbiat Abiola Way, former Oregun Road, which was dualised in his first term. He also delivered on the Igando road dualisation work. The Public Works department was kept busy, especially during the dry season, such that pot holes on major roads were minimised. But along the line, the lure of politicking took the better of him and he was to take a decision which has continued to define his politics till date.

Tinubu decided to carve a political empire for himself, while jettisoning what was termed Babasope (the elders said so). It was a design aimed at taking away the shine off the Afenifere leaders as the Babakekeres (the new fathers) moved to set themselves away from the politics and shadows of the known Afenifere leaders, who incidentally made way for their election into public office.

Tinubu then empowered the Justice Forum (JF) to rival Afenifere in all the 20 local governments of the state and thereby created a political structure separate from the all conquering Afenifere, which scooped the six South-West states in 1999. It was a development that practically reduced the extent of deliverables at the government front as much energy was then devoted to playing politics and entrenching the political structure.

That era also witnessed constant squabbles between the rising JF and the Afenifere structure in Lagos. It was around that period that the rivalry between Tinubu and the late Alhaji Ganiyu Dawodu, commonly referred to as the GOD of Lagos Politics, crystallized, leading to a total breakdown of relationship and the political confrontation of 2003. At a stage, Tinubu had stopped attending the regular meetings at the Ijebu Igbo residence of Pa Abraham Adesanya and it was apparent that the Lagos governor was out to midwife a new political structure.

By the time he won his re-election in 2003, it had became clear that the then last man standing of the South-West would take his politics to higher grounds. What observers saw between 2003 and 2007 was more of attempts to consolidate the Tinubu politics, while some efforts were tailored towards service delivery. It had been said that the praises that were heaped on Babatunde Raji Fashola, who took over from Tinubu in 2007, were as a result of the fact that the state had become rotten at the time he took over.

Fashola and the Lagos conundrum Notwithstanding the growing rot that had set into the service delivery process in Lagos at the end of Tinubu’s administration in 2007, the man was credited with a good sense in picking Babatunde Raji Fashola as his successor. Fashola, a former Chief of Staff to Tinubu, had started preparing for a return to his law chambers when Tinubu vested the gubernatorial ticket of the Action Congress in him. The man had no choice than to take Lagos higher than he met it. He cleared the rubbish Oshodi had become and started some road woks.

He also modernised the BRT transport system and kick-started the ambitious Eko Atlantic project. Notwithstanding his shyness in the media, Fashola became the toast of many for “doing something” in Lagos. Even the opposition parties recognised the efforts Fashola put in to rescue the rot in Lagos and in some quarters, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) actually scouted round for an opponent against him in 2011.

A leader of the PDP told The Friday Edition that he advised a friend of his, a former senator in the state, to stick to his present assignment rather than contesting against Fashola. Indeed, the PDP at a stage prayed that the crisis being orchestrated against the governor by suspected Tinubu’s associates who wanted to deny him of a second term shoulad fester so that the party could snap Fashola from Tinubu’s hands and get an unbeatable candidate for the 2011 race. However, to many in Tinubu’s camp, Fashola wasn’t doing anything fantastic.

He was said to be merely executing the blueprint put in place by Tinubu. Somehow, Fashola scaled the huddle within his own camp and secured a second term in office in May 2011. Incidentally, the question since his re-election had been whether he has slowed down from performing. In recent interviews, Fashola had defended the fact that his administration has not slowed down and that it was keeping faith with its development agenda. But analysts would claim that the fact that the man has to defend himself against non-performance was an indication that he might have stopped working.

It was said that he did not advertise his accomplishments in the first term before the media blew them out of proportion. Again, those who affirm that he has slowed down observe that the man could be getting worried of what some called “lack of apparent political future.” it was said in some quarters that the governor could have lost his motivation because his party seemed not to have a future role for him after his current job.

So, could the verdict of the EIU be a correct assertion of the true state of life in Lagos? Not a few of the millions of Nigerians who come face-to-face with the grim realities of Lagos on a daily basis would agree. While Fashola was credited twith having done something in his first term, the local governments and the Local council development areas under his watch have been turning in dismal performances. Those who live in Lagos would say that there is hardly a council that can boast of having tarred one kilometre of road in Lagos in the last 12 years. Many also query the performance of the Fashola administration itself as apparently overrated.

An analyst said that with over N22 billion in Internally Generated Revenue(IGR) monthly and about N8 billion from the Federation account, Lagos should come forward with far more achievements than what Fashola and Tinubu have on the ground in their combined 13 years of administering Lagos. One of the criticisms against Tinubu and Fashola is their preference to carry out more repair works on roads in Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki axis, while neglecting the thickly populated Alimosho, Ikorodu, Agege and Amuwo Odofin axes.

A commentator said that Capitol Road in Agege, which is less than three kilometres, has been under construction in the last three years, while the just completed Iju Road, which terminates at Iju Waterworks, took more than four years to complete. Thus, whatever commentaries would trail the EIU report on Lagos, the situation that daily confronts many in the most populated Nigerian city would indicate that the survey is not far from the truth and this should serve as a wake up call to duty for those saddled with service delivery in the state.

Boko Haram: Christians will take up arms if …

CATHOLIC Archbishop of Owerri, Imo State, His Grace, Most Reverend Anthony J.V. Obinna, has said if the k*lling of Christians in the North by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, continues unabated, Christians would take up arms to protect themselves.

He made the statement in a press briefing to announce the annual Nkuzi Odenigbo lecture, scheduled to hold on Saturday in Owerri. According to him, despite all provocations against Christianity by the Islamic sect, Christians had continued to remain quiet.

He said though it was the responsibility of every government to protect the life and property of its citizens, if the Nigerian government failed to do so, it would be held responsible. He, however, lauded the Federal Government over the planned negotiation with Boko Haram, as a way to return peace to the country.

The 4 Wives (A MUST READ)

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He's very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.

He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant's confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.

Now, the merchant's 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, "Now I have 4 wives with me. But when I die, I'll be alone. How lonely I'll be!"

Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.

The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant's heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is so good over here! I'm going to remarry when you die!" The merchant's heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help and you've always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I di*, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.
Then a voice called out : "I'll leave with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go." The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, "I should have taken much better care of you while I could have !"

Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives

a. The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it'll leave us when we di*.

b. Our 3rd wife ? Our possessions, status and wealth. When we di*, they all go to others.

c. The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we're alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

d. The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.
Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it's a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we're on our deathbed to lament
