Nigerian Army Confirms Boko Haram Leader Shekau Is Dead - Report

The Defence Headquarters, today, released a statement claiming to have killed a man posing as the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, or his impersonator in an attack (both land and air) in Konduga Borno state between 12nd to 17th September. Read DH's press statement below, signed by spokesperson, Maj. Gen Chris Olukayode:

"Nigerian troops have been conducting coordinated air and land operations in furtherance of efforts at containing the terrorists in the North East part of the country. Somehow, it became apparent that the terrorists in continuation of their campaign of terror were determined to take over communities around Maiduguri which is their prime target.

There was therefore the need to ensure that communities such as Konduga were protected. It is noteworthy that the terrorists made not less than four attempts between 12 and 17 September 2014 to violate the security and enter Konduga to perpetrate their atrocities. Air and land forces were subsequently deployed to handle the situation.
The convoy of combat vehicles typical of terrorists’ mission that involves their top commanders, were fiercely engaged by the land and air forces. Several of the terrorists including some of their commanders lost their lives in the encounters which lasted an average of about 5 hours each.
The troops captured some of the terrorists and their equipment. In the course of those encounters, one Mohammed Bashir who has been acting or posing on videos as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as leader of the group died. Since the name Shekau has become a brand name for the terrorists’ leader, the Nigerian military remains resolute to serve justice to anyone who assumes that designation or title as well as all terrorists that seek to violate the freedom and territory of Nigeria.
On restoring normalcy after the encounter, inhabitants of the community who were victims of terrorists activities corroborated information on the identity of Bashir Mohammed alias Abubakar Shekau, alias Abacha Abdullahi Geidam alias Damasack etc. Indeed, the recent devastation on the leadership of the insurgents is attributable to the renewed commitment to the mission of eradicating terrorism in our country.
Meanwhile, a total of 135 terrorists have yesterday evening surrendered along with equipment to troops around Biu Local Government Area. A group of 88 submitted themselves at Mairiga/Bun – Yadi while another group of 45 terrorists were taken in around Mubi – Michika. They are all being interrogated and processed in conformity with the dictates of standard best practices.

The Defence Headquarters applauds the gallantry of the Nigerian troops who have remained undaunted and professional in prosecuting this campaign against terror. The keen interest exhibited by our neighbours and allies is commendable and we appreciate them. All allies in the war against terrorism are hereby assured of the Nigerian military’s resolve to maintain momentum in the efforts to decimate and defeat terrorists. The invaluable efforts toward achieving sustainable peace and victory against the terrorists are highly appreciated." Source

Boko Haram Leader Claims Responsibility For Abuja Nyanya Bomb Blast In New Video

Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau has claimed responsibility for the Abuja bomb blast that killed not less than 75 people via a video message.

“We are the ones that carried out the attack in Abuja,” Shekau said in the 28-minute video, referring to the deadliest attack ever in Nigeria’s capital which targeted Nyanya bus station packed with morning commuters.

Seated with a kalashnikov resting on his left shoulder and dressed in military uniform, the insurgent commander spoke in both Arabic and the Hausa language that is dominant in northern Nigeria. The message was delivered to AFP in a manner consistent with previous videos from Boko Haram.
Shekau indicated that Boko Haram has fighters based in the capital. Referring to President Goodluck Jonathan, he said:

“We are in your city.”

The bombing at the Nyanya bus terminal on the outskirts of Abuja was the first major attack in the capital in two years. Most of the insurgents’ violence in recent months had been concentrated in the group’s remote northeastern stronghold, where the military is waging an 11-month-old offensive.
Shekau has been declared a global terrorist by the United States, which has put a $7 million bounty (5.1 million euros) on his head.

Boko Haram Leader Shekau, Boasts In New Video, Claims October 24 Massacre

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video released Sunday that he led an October 24 attack in which 35 people found in military uniform were killed in the Nigerian city of Damaturu.
“Look at what happened in Damaturu (capital of northeastern Yobe state),” the head of the Islamist group said in the video obtained by AFP through the same intermediary as previous clips.

“Since we killed them with our hands — in fact I was the commander of the operation — so, you cannot say I’m making conjecture,” he said. The authenticity of the video clip — in which Shekau spoke for about 11 minutes in Arabic, Hausa and Kanuri — could not be independently confirmed.
“This is a brief message to the world. We carried out the Damaturu attacks with Allah’s help, with Allah’s might, with Allah’s glory and with victory from Allah, the Creator,” he said.
The video was titled “Battle of Damaturu” in Arabic.
Thirty-five bodies in military uniform were brought to a morgue in Nigeria’s restive northeast after a coordinated assault by Boko Haram targeting the security forces, a hospital source had said.
Contacted by AFP on October 28, Yobe state military spokesman Lazarus Eli did not deny reports that dozens of soldiers were killed during the clash.

It is disheartening to see that a man can boast of wicked and terrible things in a the name of  Allah. If boko Haram followers are mostly Muslims, then the truth be told, this people think they are fighting for the right course even if innocent people's lives are destroyed. This is the time Muslim leaders need to get across to their subjects or followers the true will of Allah.

It will be a national disgrace if Shekau is alive- Dr Bode

The Director of Advanced Centre for Sustainable Development, Dr. Bode Olaonipekun, on Thursday declared that it will be a national disgrace to Nigeria and the military if the leader of the Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau is still alive.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Olaonipekun said the military was too quick to speak on the issue when it didn’t recover the dead body or had enough evidence to show that the leader was actually dead.

He said: “The Federal Government has not done too badly in the fight, but I will quickly add that not too well. There are two aspects to this issue of terrorism, from my own point of view. Firstly, I think our attitude of talking too much is taking its toll on the issue of security. Before anything happens everybody is talking, the security chiefs are talking, the special advisers to the government are talking, meanwhile these are issues that should be regarded as security information.

“Handling security information is not just saying everything, because when you give all the information to your enemy, the battle is as good as lost. They might have the strategies they are reserving, but giving hasty or too much information might not help matters and now if not a disgrace to us as a nation, with all apologies to the security operatives it might be a disgrace to them on the long run if truly Shekau is alive.”
