Dangote Makes Bloomberg's 50 Most Influential People in The World

Nigeria/Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, has been named among the 50 most influential personalities in the world by Bloomberg, a business and financial news media in the US. The list consisted of CEOs, world leaders as well as religious leaders.

According to Bloomberg, those who made the list are businessmen & women who "build companies and assemble fortunes. They run banks, or hope to disrupt them. They shape economies and spread ideas. They manage money and wield the clout that goes with the billions of dollars they invest.” Read what was written about Dangote after below...

He’s feted like royalty. He has businesses ranging from cement to sugar to energy in a dozen sub-Saharan countries. He’s a fixture at elite gatherings such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. No
African has ridden the continent’s halting march out of poverty toward potential prosperity as spectacularly as its richest person, the Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote.

Dangote’s clout extends beyond the boardroom and the high-flier dinner circuit. In March, as votes were tallied in Nigeria’s presidential election, Dangote, 58, served as an intermediary between the camps of the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan, and his ultimately victorious rival, Muhammadu Buhari. “There’s no question that he is quite an exceptional person—not only in Africa but globally,” says Mark Mobius, chairman of the emerging-markets group at Franklin Templeton Investments.

Today, Dangote is seeking to export his business empire and his influence beyond his terror-racked and corruption-riddled home country. Nigeria is responsible for about 85 percent of his fortune, which stood at $13.9 billion as of Sept. 9, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He’s planning new cement factories across Africa and as far afield as Nepal and Brazil.

He’s considering taking Dangote Cement public on the London Stock Exchange and has even floated the idea of buying his beloved Arsenal, a top-ranking soccer club in the English Premier League. “I’m surprised I’m getting even four hours of sleep a day,” Dangote says. “We’re going ahead full steam.” The wealth Dangote has amassed is particularly conspicuous in a country as poor as Nigeria, which the International Monetary Fund ranked 122nd in the world in gross domestic product per capita last year. “You
really see the inequalities,” then-president Jonathan said in May last year at a World Economic Forum conclave in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. Citing Dangote by name, Jonathan said, “Income distribution is skewed toward a few people.”

Dangote says his critics are being churlish. “Instead of studying how Dangote succeeded, they’re busy complaining,” he says. When he says that, he’s speaking above the thrum of his private jet as it makes its way back home to Lagos from Addis Ababa after an hourlong meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. But compared with the lifestyles of some tycoons, Dangote’s is understated. Divorced from his wife, the mother of his three adult daughters, he lives on Lagos’s Victoria Island. It’s one of Africa’s most expensive neighborhoods, but the home is far from lavish. Adjacent to a Mitsubishi dealership, the house is sparsely decorated, with a modest half-moon-shaped swimming pool set in a small garden.

Dangote grew up in the city of Kano on the edge of the Sahara, raised by his maternal grandfather, a wealthy rice and commodities trader. In his early 20s, he left for Lagos in search of fat profits buying and selling sugar, textiles, and cement in the fast-growing city. Soon, he was earning enough “to buy a Mercedes 200 every day,” he says. These days, he’s fallen on what are for him hard times. His net worth has tumbled by some $10 billion in the past two years because of the crash in the price of crude and unrest in Nigeria. Even so, he remains characteristically upbeat. His setback? “An accident,” he says. “I’m very confident that in the next two years, you won’t even remember it.”.

Supers Eagles To Smile to the Bank As Aliko Dangote Is ready to redeem $1million promise

All it takes is a little reminder and the millions will roll in. Billionaire, Aliko Dangote says he is ready to redeem his promise of awarding $1m to the Super Eagles for winning the 2013 African Cup of Nations last year in South Africa. He said this a few days after goal keeper and Super Eagles vice-captain Vincent Enyeama begged him and others who pledged various things to the team to fulfill their promises.
"We understand the busy schedule of Alhaji Dangote, we are just asking his aides to help remind him of the promise to us. It’s just a reminder to patriots who are very busy and may not have been prompted after they made their pledges, because the players are determined to bring more honours to fatherland at the forthcoming World Cup” Enyeama said
Speaking with BBC Sports, Dangote said the only reason he hasn't redeemed his promise was because nobody from the team or NFF had contacted him
"We’ve been waiting for Nigerian officials to collect the money but nobody has written to us. We will write to them, asking for the account numbers of the players, then we’ll make the transfer immediately.”

Africa Richest Man gets $3.3 billion Loan to build Oil Refinery

When it comes to huge investments, only this can makes things happen. He has shown to have magic fingers when it comes to investing. No fewer than 12 local and international banks have loaned Africa's richest man and foremost industrialist Aliko Dangote $3.3 billion to build Nigeria’s biggest petroleum refinery and petrochemical/fertilizer plants.

The banks are: Standard Chartered Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank, Fidelity Bank, Ecobank Nigeria, United Bank for Africa, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, Standard Bank of South Africa, Diamond Bank, First Bank Nigeria, First City Monument Bank, and FirstRand Bank.

Standard Chartered is the global co-ordinator, while Guaranty Trust Bank is the local co-ordinator.

According to a statement released by Dangote Group a few days ago, the factories they plan to build will create about 9500 direct and 25 000 indirect posts. These plants will cut the existing volumes of refined fuel that are imported by almost half which will end the importation of fertilizer in Nigeria.

As a result, several African nations will be less reliant on importing fuel and fertilizer from foreign markets, reducing the negative impact of negotiating terms within increasingly turbulent international markets.

PhD, MBA Holders Apply as Truck Drivers at Dangote Group

The Chairman and Chief Executive Director of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has made a shocking disclosure that PhD and MBA Holders were among over 13,000 applicants who applied for the recent Graduate Executive Truck Driver in his company.

Dangote disclosed this Thursday evening during a mentorship chat with World Bank Youth Forum (WBYF) Coordinator, Mr. Rotimi Olawale with the support of the World Bank Country Director, Ms Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly.

Speaking to the surprised youthful audience, the business mogul said that the company only needed 100 drivers but was surprised to receive over 13000 graduate applicants and amongst them were about six Phd, 65 MBA, 649 Masters and over 8, 460 Bachelor degree holders.

He said what surprised him most was not the sheer number of the applicants but the quality and calibre of those that applied who equally graduated from reputable higher institutions.
"All these things are verifiable, and they all graduated from reputable institutions which is satisfactory; and our plan is to eventually make them self dependent", he said.

"Despite the fact that the drivers get trip allowances on each trip along with their salaries, the arrangement is that they will own the trucks at no interests or repayments after they must have reached 300, 000 kilometres, which is about 140 trips from Lagos to Kano and a hard working driver can complete in two years, while lazy ones can take maximum of four years", he explained.

Speaking further, Dangote stated that his company is already one of the largest conglomerates in Africa, and disclosed that the group's five-year target is to reach a net-worth of $75 billion capitalisation and among the top 100 companies in Africa.

He assured that the group, which have diversified into various trading and manufacturing subsidiaries can achieve the set target with just three of them including Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugars/Salt, and Dangote Flours.

The business icon used the opportunity to advise the youths to be focused, forthright and that determination to succeed with integrity is the key to a sustainable wealth.
