Angry Church Worshipers kill fleeing church bomber
Angry worshippers at the headquarters of Church Of Christ In Nations (COCIN) in Jos on Sunday killed one of the two suspected bearers of the explosives that hit the Church in the morning.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bomber and one other, who both wore army camouflage, drove into the church and beat the security before hitting the building.
NAN's correspondent, who was at the scene, reports that the suspect appeared to be in his early 30s.
The suspect, who wore a neatly carved moustache, looked well-fed.
But probably afraid of dying, the bomb carrier jumped out of the vehicle just before the blast went off and attempted to run but could not move as he was affected by the blast.
The angry worshipers, however, descended on him and clubbed him to death.
An eyewitness and a worshipper in the Church, Joyce Dalyop, told NAN that there were arguments among the worshipers over what to do with the bomber before he was finally killed.
"Immediately they (bombers) entered the Church, one of them jumped out of the black jeep but luck ran out of him as the explosion affected him and so he could not run very fast before he was caught.’’
"Some people even pleaded that he should not be killed; they suggested that he should be handed over to Police for further investigation, but others argued that the police could not be trusted and opined that the suspect may be released,” she said.
Another worshipper in the Church, Elder Bulus Haruna, said that the other bomber, who drove the vehicle, was blown into pieces together with the vehicle that was reduced to only the engine.
"His (bomber) body parts were scattered everywhere – the legs and hands were charred and had become roasted by the fire from the explosion,” he said.
Jos suicide attacks : Victims narrate experiences
As rescue workers continue to search and evacuate victims of the bomb blast that rocked the COCIN headquarters Church in Jos on Sunday, victims have continued to give account of what they witnessed.
“I only saw fire coming toward me,’’ Mr Denis Choji, who was rushed to Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, said on his hospital bed.
“In my confusion, I started running. I didn’t even know the time I jumped the huge fence of the Church and scurried away.’’
Choji’s face, hands and laps were terribly burnt, and doctors were struggling to treat the first-degree burns on his body.
“I thank God that I survived that terrible bomb blast. I give God the glory.’’
Another eyewitness, Mr Appolos Damburam, 58, whose ears were affected, said he saw the Jeep used by the suicide bombers approach the church.
“But before I could open my mouth to ask why the car was coming too close to the church, the blast occurred.
“I discovered later that I am still alive and touched the man beside me just to be sure he too is alive.
“ I have never seen anything like this before. A blast in our Church? I cannot believe such wickedness,’’ lamented Damburam, who looked tired, weak and was covered with dust.
Mrs Helen Nerle, a worshipper, said that the new pastor of the Church, Rev. Stephen Vongdip, told the congregation on arrival in January that he had a dream of a bomb attack on the Church.
“The dream was in November when he was still in Lagos. On arrival here in January, he told us of the dream, and assured us of God’s mercy.
“He told us to pray and not be afraid. That dream came to true today.
“We give God the glory for protecting his own and ensuring that the casualty figure is minimal.’’
BREAKING NEWS:3 killed as suicide bomber attacks church in Jos
A suicide bomber drove an explosives packed car into a church in the volatile central city of Jos on Sunday and killed three people, church leaders told AFP.
The attack is the latest in a country grappling with what have become almost daily assaults, most of them blamed on the Islamist sect Boko Haram.
Church workers said a car forced its way through the gate during an early morning service.
“We were in the church during the time of worship and a suicide bomber forced himself into through the gate, into the church and the bomb exploded,” John Haruna, the reverend of the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN), told AFP.
Another church member who is also an activist with the Christian human rights organisation Stefanos Foundation gave a similar account.
“It was suicide bomber, he drove his car into the church, approaching the pulpit and it exploded. Three members of the church died and 10 are injured,” Mark Lipdo, said.
He said pieces of human flesh littered the church premises.
Boko Haram has been blamed for a wave of increasingly bloody gun and bomb attacks in several parts of Africa’s most populous country in recent months, mostly in the Muslim-dominated north.
Incidents of attacks are also growing in the central region, the so-called middle belt which divides the predominantly Muslim north and the mainly Christian south.
Last Sunday several people were wounded in an explosion near a church outside the capital, Abujba.
Boko Haram has targeted Christians on several previous occasions, notably with a series of coordinated blasts on Christmas Day
