Death toll of Lagos building collapse rises to seven

At least seven persons have been confirmed dead in the uncompleted four-storey building belonging to  Iru/Victoria Island Local Council Development Area which collapsed on Monday afternoon in Victoria Island area of Lagos State. Rescued operations ended at about 6pm on Tuesday.
TG gathered that the victims who lost their lives were construction workers and the architect, Oyedele, who designed the building and was supervising the building which collapsed at 8, Muri-Okunola Street, Iru/Victoria Island Local Council Development Area.
The General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed that seven lifeless bodies have so far been recovered, said 25 others mostly construction workers were also rescued from the rubbles of the collapsed building.
He said the rescue officials worked through the night, adding that his men had to relocate from the Great Nigeria Insurance building fire disaster scene to the scene of the collapsed building to save lives.
“At least seven dead bodies were recovered while 25 people have been rescued from the collapsed building. Most of them were artisans and the architect that designed the building,” he stated.

Church building collapse: Death toll rises to 40

Death toll has risen to 40 in a Catholic church building that collapsed on them at Adamgbe Village, Mbayongo in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State, last Saturday. Daily Sun gathered the worshippers had gathered around 9:00 p.m. for the Easter Mass when the building collapsed, killing many of them on the spot while others sustained various degrees of injury. 

The worshippers of the St. Roberts Catholic Church Adamgbe, Mbayongo were said to be in the middle of the Easter night vigil when the church wall fell, crushing several people to death. A survivor, Michael Tyokyaa described the incident as tragic, adding, it took long before help could came their way. 

Tyokyaa revealed further that police officers from Vandeikya township in the local government managed to arrive the scene almost an hour after the collapse of the building.

 State Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Jonathan Zathsy who is a native of the village, told Daily Sun on phone that as soon as he got the news he sent his local government party chairman to the village.“My party chairman told me that over 20 corpses were removed in his presence before he left the church.

 It is very sad indeed. The people gathered for the Easter Mass when the building collapsed on them.” Mbayongo Vandeikya is a community in Benue State that borders Obudu in Cross River State. The church attendance provides some sort of spiritual and psychological comfort to many.

5 trapped as Lagos govt building collapses

No fewer than five persons, including a ministry official, were trapped, yesterday afternoon, as a one-storey building collapsed at Alausa, Ikeja, close to the Governor’s Office.

At press time, no casualty was recorded in the incident.

The building, being built by the Ministry of Environment and still under construction, caved in at exactly 2:30 p.m.

The building is about 10 metres away from the main building of Lands Bureau, on the same premises, with a commercial bank adjacent Alausa Millennium Park.

Vanguard gathered that the site engineer, Mr. Oki, was rescued at exactly 3:55pm, after over one and half hours.

One of the onlookers, told NEWSMEN that the building belongs to the state Ministry of Environment.

“The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development came here to mark the building insisting that it lacked approval and that work should discontinue, but the Ministry of Environment insisted on going on with the work,” a worker who did not want to be mentioned, told NEWSMEN

In a statement, Director, Public Relations,Ministry of Environment, Mr Fola Adeyemi, explained that Governor Babatunde Fashola had earlier ordered the demolition of the structure when it was observed to be defective.

”In the process of the pulling down, a section of the structure caved in and trapped some of the demolition squad, who were eventually rescued by Lagos State rescue team comprising Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Fire Service and Lagos State Ambulances Bus Services, LASAMBUS,” he said.
