President Mills said he knows how it has affected ordinary Ghanaian s but had no option because the amount of subsidy and the current price of oil which is more than 100 dollars and other consideration gave the government no alternative.

President Mills served notice that Ghanaians are likely to smile when the crude oil prices are reduced.

He assured Ghanaians that a time will come when prices will come down drastically.

Ghana latest in Africa to cut fuel subsidies

Ghana has cut fuel subsidies following an increase in crude oil prices and the depreciation of the Ghana cedi currency, the head of Ghana's National Petroleum Authority (NPA) said in a statement on Thursday.

Ghana, which joined the club of oil producers in West Africa last year, has come under increased pressure from the International Monetary Fund to remove the fuel subsidies.

The IMF has urged countries across West and Central Africa to cut fuel subsidies, which they say are not effective in directly aiding the poor, but do promote corruption and smuggling.

The past months have seen governments in Nigeria, Guinea, Cameroon and Chad moving to cut state subsidies on fuel.

Alex Mould said the cumulative effect of the rise in crude oil prices this year and the about 5.7 percent depreciation of the cedi meant a 25 percent increase in cedi terms in the cost of procuring crude oil and petroleum products since January.

Mould, the Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, said Ghana has spent about 450 million cedis on fuel subsidies in 2011.

The price change effective from December 29, will see the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) increase by 30 percent while petrol and diesel will go up 15 percent at pump.

Mould said the NPA would be monitoring crude oil prices and will not to increase or decrease pump prices if the average crude price stay within the $107-110 per barrel range.

Brent crude rose 4 cents to $107.60 a barrel by 0933 GMT on Thursday after falling nearly $2 the day before, while the Ghana cedi was trading at 1.6370/95 to the U.S. dollar.

Ghana's Minister for Finance Kwabena Duffour said the removal of subsidies would have a positive impact on Ghana's economy.

"Subsidising fuel is not sustainable," Duffour told Reuters. "It is the right thing to do so we can sustain our fiscal consolidation."

Ghana to sell electricity to Nigeria

Ghana’s ruling government has concluded plans to begin export of electric power to Nigeria and other West African countries by 2015.

The country’s Vice President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, who unfolded the plan in Accra, on Tuesday, said the government has already embarked on extensive expansion of power infrastructure to enable them achieve the project.

Mahama explained that a key motivation for the investment was that Ghana presently has competitive advantage in the area of power supply over other neighbouring countries, including Nigeria, which is still grappling with massive power deficit for its estimated 150 million citizens.

The vice president, who spoke at a summit on Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Compact Two in Accra, said the country intends to consolidate on its existing energy infrastructures by exploring alternative sources of supply, including solar power and biomass resources, to ensure that the target of selling power to other West African countries was achieved by the next four years.

Mahama, who underscored the imperative of stable energy in the economic development of his country said Ghana was partnering the United States Government to realize the dream, stressing that raising the nation`s power generation would in addition create wealth and alleviate poverty among her citizens.

It was in the light of that initiative that the Millennium Challenge Account Compact two was organized to seek ways of funding power generation and transmission and uninterrupted power supply.

Under the arrangement, the country intends to increase her current 2000 megawatts of electricity to 5000 megawatts with the hope of selling surpluses to needy countries including Nigeria. Also speaking, Ghana’s deputy minister of Energy, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini explained that the country would require about $1.7billion to meet its quest for universal access to power supply, pointing out the President Arthur Mills government had already received about $966.55million from bilateral and multilateral institutions in that regard.

Alhaji Fuseini said there was a` shortfall of about $729million against which background it considered MCA compact two was considered useful. IT would be recalled that Ghana has one of the largest dams in the world had in 2009 celebrated her ten years of uninterrupted power supply.

Authoritative sources say that the Akosombo Dam built by late President Kwame Nkrumah has the potential to supply the entire West Africa with electricity if fully utilized. It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan had shortly after being sworn-in in May reviewed the nation’s power roadmap, raising fears that Nigeria may continue to live with power shortages in the foreseeable future.

Ghana's President says he'll never legalise homos*xuality

Ghana's President John Atta Mills said on Wednesday his government would never legalise homos*xuality, weighing in for the first time on an issue that has led to talk of possible aid cuts by the United Kingdom.

Homos*xuality is illegal in 37 African countries, where rights groups say gays are often the targets of violent hate campaigns.

Mills said Ghana, seen as one of Africa's most stable and successful democracies in recent years, was committed to upholding human rights as provided by the constitution.

"(But) I as president of this nation, I will never initiate or support any attempts to legalise homos*xuality in Ghana," he said.

Britain has warned it will review aid to countries that persecute homos*xuals. It has suspended £19 million in aid to Malawi because of concerns including its treatment of gays. Ghana and Uganda have also been linked to the threat.

Ghana, a former British colony, receives around £90 million a year from DFID, Britain's development agency, according to the agency's website.

"Britain made these statements that reflect (its) societal norms and ideals but (it) does not have the right to direct other sovereign nations as to what they should do, especially where their societal norms and ideals are different from those which exist in Prime Minister Cameron's society," Mills said.

In Ghana, the minister in charge of the oil-producing Western region called in July for the arrest of anyone found practising gay s*x following local media reports of a supposed increase in homos*xuality in the region.

Mills said Ghana recognised the assistance his country received from donors but he said it could not accept it coming with strings attached.

Nigerian Students in Ghana Pay N155 Billion as Tuition Annually

According to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Malam Lamido Sanusi, 71,000 Nigerian students in Ghana currently pay an annual tuition of N155Billion to Ghana.

Meanwhile the whole government budget for all Federal universities in Nigeria annually is a N121Billion.

The CBN Governor was drawing attention to the on-going serious capital flight from Nigeria.

Doesn't this call for a sober reflection? They only mentioned Ghana, what about the thousands of students in Malaysia (I hear there are so many of them there) in Europe, in India, in the US etc, paying trillions of Naira to get quality education.

Meanwhile, you will hardly find foreign students in Nigeria. Obviously there's need to reform the education system in Nigeria. So instead of complaining about money leaving Nigeria, they should do something about improving the quality of education in this country, so parents will stop sending their kids abroad.
