Synagogue Building Collapse: Lagos State Government Moves Against T. B Joshua - Report

The Lagos State Government has moved against the popular Synagogue Church of All Nations, at Ikotun, after one of its buildings collapsed last week killing at least 80 people including a 10-year-old kid with many others left critically injured.

The structure, which was under construction, was initially a two-storey building before the addition of four new floors which were under construction. As of Thursday, after NEMA announced that rescue work has ended, the death toll in the building collapse hit 80. Among the dead were 67 South Africans.

According to Punch, the Lagos State Building Control Agency has, therefore, marked the main building of the church, asking for relevant documents to prove its structural integrity.

The General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun-Odunayo, who confirmed that the building had been marked by the agency in a phone interview with Saturday PUNCH, said it had requested that the church provides some documents, adding that a structural integrity test would be carried out on all the buildings in the church complex.
She said:
“X’ (the mark on the building) does not mean demolition; it is for structural integrity test to be carried out on the building and the church is expected to provide all the documents for approval and the church has three months to do this.”
Asked if the building would be demolished in case the church failed to meet the requirements within the time frame, Animashaun-Odunayo declined to make further comments.

“Look, it is still under investigation; I can’t say more than that. I don’t even know who I am talking with on the phone,” she said.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions between South Africa and Nigeria have escalated as the SA government struggles to get answers about the building collapse that killed the largest number of South Africans outside the country since the downing of the Helderberg airliner in 1987.

Pretoria’s diplomats are reportedly contending that “Nigeria is obsessed with its competitive attitude towards South Africa”. Here's what a disgusted senior South African government official involved in the mission to bring the bodies of their citizens home said to Mail & Guardian:
“The Nigerians have flatly refused our search and rescue missions, the same way they initially refused international assistance during the search for the missing girls. They feel that this could send a politically worrying message that they don’t have capacity. The reality is that our search and rescue teams and sniffer dogs are the best on the continent.

Making matters worse is Nigeria’s culture of secrecy and superstition. You find even government officials believing in the cult of this prophet and not asking questions during such disasters. It’s unbelievable. But there is also an element of cover-up by [preacher TB] Joshua, because there is a possibility of litigation cases against him for negligence.

The worst thing to note [is that] the Nigerian government has not issued any statement: no condolences to our government, nor to the families.”

SA's Department of international relations and co-operation spokesperson Clayson Monyela confirmed that South Africa has identified most of the bodies through passports, and that the government will work with family members to identify the remains of their loved ones. Source

Lagos Ranked World’s 4th Worst City

Everywhere I turn its either Nigeria this or Nigeria that, well it shows we're meant to be doing better than our current form, truth is we all need to improve in the country, every individual in the country.

Lagos is the fourth worst city in the world, Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU, an independent forecasting and advisory business within the Economist Group has said. And its top worst cities, are scattered around Africa and Asia.

Lagos, the fourth on the list, shares its 137 position with Port Moresby, in Papua New Guinea on 38.9 per cent. The report made available yesterday described it as the second-fastest growing city in Africa and the fourth worst city on earth.

“Rapid growth is not always a good thing because Lagos is now a magnet for two perpetual threats to peace: pirates and Islamist warriors. Boko Haram have a problem with cities like Lagos and also lots of weaponry. Pirates threaten trade and use kidnapping as a method of funding. Islamist terrorist groups such as Boko Haram (“Education is forbidden”) want to create their own version of heaven on earth by destroying cities such as Lagos and imposing strict sharia law.

Lagos has enormous potential but as yet little to show for it – hence its poor ranking,” the report said. EIU in its 2013 annual survey of the world’s 140 major metropolises, said Lagos has a long way to go politically, socially and economically before it joins the emerging market club.

Deported Igbo's Sue Lagos State Government To N1 Billion Lawsuit Over Unlawful Deportation

The Lagos State Government says it is unmoved by the N1 billion suit filed against it by seven of the Igbo destitute relocated to Onitsha, Anambra State, southeast Nigeria, in July this year.

Seven of the destitute, namely, Joseph Aniebonam, Osondu Mbuto, Osondu Agwu, Nnenna Ogbonna, Emily Okoroariri, Friday Ndukwe and Onyeka Ugwu, sued on behalf of others, the Attorney-General of Lagos State and the Commissioner of Police and Lagos State Government to the tune of N1 billion.

Responding to the suit, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye said the government was not moved by the N1 billion suit as it would appropriately respond to the challenge.

Ipaye said the state government had been served the court papers and government was ready to meet them in court.

He stated that the suit could be politically motivated but that government was going to respond to it appropriately.

“We are not moved by the N1 billion suit. The suilt could be politically motivated or not. We are going to respond to it as we have been served the court papers,” he said.

Interim Lagos State Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Joe Igbokwe said: “we will meet them in court,” adding that the suit was politically motivated as those relocated could not have garnered the power to sue the government.

According to Igbokwe, those behind the suit should also sue Peter Obi for deporting several Igbo in his state to Ebonyi State in 2011, while accusing the Anambra State Government of being behind the suit because of the coming governorship election.

In the motion filed on behalf of the destitute, through their legal counsel, Barrister Ugo Ugwunnadi, an Onitsha-based legal practitioner, the applicants are praying the court to declare that they, as Nigerian citizens, are entitled to the enjoyment of their fundamental rights as provided for in Sections 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 41 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

They applicants are also seeking a declaration of the court that their arrest and detention in various camps, Oshodi rehabilitation centre, police cells and prisons, within Lagos State for no offence known to law and without trial and conviction by a court of competent jurisdiction, amounted to a serious breach of their rights as provided for in the relevant sections of the constitution, saying such action was illegal, null, void and unlawful.

The victims also sought an order of the court to declare that their deportation from Lagos State of Nigeria to Anambra State of Nigeria on 24 July amounted to a gross violation of their rights and a breach of the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

They noted that the court should mandate the first respondent to re-absorb and accommodate the applicants within Lagos State of Nigeria since they are Nigerian citizens and are entitled to reside in any part of Nigeria, including Lagos State.

The applicants equally sought a perpetual injunction restraining the respondents, their agents, privies, subordinates, workers and officers, howsoever called, from their further deportation or refusing them free entry into Lagos and free exit therefrom, as well as an order mandating the respondents to tender a written apology to them by publishing the apology in the following newspapers: Thisday, Vanguard and Daily Sun continuously for 30 days, from the date of the first publication, for unlawful and gross violation of their constitutional rights.

They added that the issue for determination is whether the action of the respondents in arresting, detaining and their subsequent deportation from Lagos to Onitsha, Anambra State is justified in law, in view of the supreme provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, adding that if the issue is resolved in the negative and against the respondents, the applicants are entitled to the reliefs sought.

The Lagos State Government had on 24 July, 2013 relocated at least 67 Igbo destitute to Onisha, Anambra State, an action that had generated serious controversy for several weeks.

Governor Babatunde Fashola has since apologised to the Igbo over his action, saying he had no strained relationship with the Igbo people.

Okada Robbers Burnt to D*ath

It was a sad end for three suspected okada robbers who were alleged to have been terrorising the residents of Ikotun area of Lagos State, Nigeria; they were caught and set ablaze by an angry mob.

The suspected robbers were k*lled after their robbery operation was foiled by a member of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, vigilante group in the same area.

The robbers, who allegedly operated with the aid of motorcycle, met their demise when they attempted to rob a woman, a wholesales recharge cards seller, at Governor’s Road, Ikotun at about 7 pm, on Wednesday.

According to an eye witness, on the fateful day, the suspected robbers parked their okada in front of the woman’s shop.

While one waited outside, the other two suspected robbers went inside the shop to rob the trader.

It was alleged that one of the robbers pointed a gun at the woman and demanded for her bag containing recharge cards and sales proceeds for the day.

The woman refused and insisted that she will not hand over the bag to them.

The argument between the woman and the suspected robbers alerted some of the residents of the area who fled when they saw the gun pointed at the woman.

This caused commotion in the area and drew the attention of the OPC member.

An eyewitness said, “When the OPC member confronted the robbers, one of them shot at him but the bullet did not enter his body.

The robbers were afraid and attempted to escape with their motorcycle.

But as they attempted to zoom off, a motorist hit their motorcycle.

They fell down and were rounded up by the residents” According to the eyewitness, before the police could intervene the mob had gathered the suspects together and burnt them beyond recognition along with their motorcycle.

“The mob set them ablaze with the petrol they got from their motorcycle.

Although the police were informed about the robbery, before they got to the area, the suspects had been burnt by the angry mob,” the eyewitness said.
