Accidental Discharge Punishable By Death Penalty, NSCDC Boss Warns Armed Squad

The Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Olu Abolurin, on Thursday in Lagos warned that accidental discharge was a capital offence. Abolurin, therefore, warned officers and men of the NSCDC to avoid accidental discharge with their weapons.

The commandant general, who was represented by Mr Laggard Osemwigie, the Assistant Commandant-General, Zone A of the company, gave the warning at the passing-out parade of 146 officers, trained by the Nigerian Army in arms handling and other combatant drillings. “Accidental discharge is a capital offence.

In NSCDC, there is nothing like accidental discharge. You have been trained on arms handling, this should guide you in the discharge of your duties. “The four weeks training is meant to help corps members to discharge their responsibilities as expected of them. “Since the constitution of the nation empowered NSCDC to carry arms, we have been improving ourselves on the necessary skills needed to discharge our duties.” The command general, who commended the army and the Lagos Government for their assistance, however, requested more help from the State Government.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, retired Maj. Tunde Panox, described the job of the NSCDC as noble and commendable for securing government property. Fashola urged the officers to serve the interest of the people, saying that they should not aid crime where ever they were posted to, stressing the need for synergy among security agencies.

Lt.-Col. Mohammed Ahmed of the 192 Battalion, who represented the army, noted that the NSCDC operatives were yet to be proficient in gun handling, stressing that more of such training would assist the operatives to do well in their jobs. “You should continue to improve on what you have learnt.

If need be, some of you may be lunched into usual combat. You all must be loyal to your superiors; you must not oppress those that you should guard,” Ahmed said. The police, Akran of Badagry, Navy, Prisons, Immigration, NDLEA, EFCC, SSS, NAPTIP and FRSC were represented at the event. (NAN)

NSCDC, Others To Blame For Oil Theft – Chief Of Naval Staff

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Dele Ezeoba, has blamed the rising spate of pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft on lack of diligent prosecution of suspects by relevant agencies.
Ezeoba, who spoke on Sunday in Brass, Bayelsa State, after a tour of the creeks and military formations in the Central Naval Command, observed that while security operatives, including the Navy had performed their duties by arresting suspected oil thieves, prosecution agencies had failed to discharge theirs diligently.
Ezeoba noted that there would be reduction in the breach of pipelines and stealing of petroleum products if agencies vested with the power of prosecution arraigned suspects and got them jailed.
The agencies vested with the power of prosecuting oil thieves are the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Police.
The Navy chief said, “The law enforcement agencies that have responsibility for prosecution should ensure that those culprits who have been caught charged to court are prosecuted and jailed.
“That will serve as a deterrent for would-be perpetrators. What we find is that there is more of the surveillance and response but that of enforcement is negligible. This kind of frustrates the efforts of the officers and men, who put their lives on the line to fight this scourge.”
