Zaccheus was arraigned before Mrs. D.N. Wanjoku, who ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody for lack of jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court to adjudicate on matter. The magistrate said since the court lacked the legal powers to hear the case, the suspect could approach the High Court for bail. She subsequently adjourned the case till 30 May for the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP’s advice on the case.

Sources said the suspect had told his interrogators that trouble started when he could not provide an undisclosed amount of money to procure an abortion of her deceased girlfriend’s three-month old pregnancy. 22 Years Old Beautiful Hotel Waitress Dies During Abortion

hen Joy Endurance, a middle-aged lady became pregnant, she chose to terminate the unwanted pregnancy. However, her efforts to that effect - by patronizing a quack - backfired and despite robust efforts made by well-wishers to save her life, the debacle eventually resulted in her death. The tragedy which occurred on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, has since plunged her family, friends and co-workers into great mourning.

Before her death, Endurance, a staff of a popular hotel in Igando area, a far-flung suburb of Lagos State, was described by a colleague as an outstanding staff who put the interest of the hotel above hers. The source explained that her selflessness and commitment to duty was the reason the management of the hotel put up a spirited effort towards her treatment at the General Hospital where she later died.

Narrating the events that led to her untimely death, the source said that the deceased was desperate to keep the pregnancy a secret. In desperation, she confided in a friend who assured her that abortion was the only way out, and thereafter, took her to a quack. Although, he was highly recommended, the quack’s handling of Endurance’s unwanted pregnancy ended in a mortal tragedy. Initially, there was no cause for alarm. Few days after the abortion, however, the deceased suffered a life-threatening complication.

Her deteriorating condition caught the attention of her bosses and she was subsequently rushed to a private hospital located at Egan, an extension of Igando. The hospital tried to salvage her situation without success and consequently referred her to the General Hospital. At this point the management of the hotel cross examined her and she made a clean br*ast of it. Her confession consequently led to the arrest of her accomplice friend and the quack, who have since been cooling their heels at the Igando Police Station.

At the General Hospital where she was admitted, the late lady responded to medication but gave up the ghost on a Wednesday afternoon. One of her colleagues who preferred anonymity avowed: “Endurance’s death is a big blow to the hotel. If anybody had told me that she would go so soon and in this manner I would have called the person a prophet of doom. She was always bubbling with life and ever motivating people around her”. Continuing, she recapped the plot of the tragedy: “We didn’t know she was pregnant until she had gone for abortion and began to have some complications.

When we found that her life was in danger, we took her to a private hospital at Egan. After a failed attempt to improve her condition, the hospital directed us to take her to the General Hospital. At that point we thought it was imperative to know the doctor that handled the abortion and the friend that led her to him. Luckily for us, she could still manage to speak at that point in time. She gave us the address of the friend and the doctor along Iyana-Iba. We informed the police who followed us to the doctor’s office and got him arrested.

We also got the friend arrested the same day.” She continued, giving more details about how the story ended on a sad note.”While she was admitted at the General Hospital, the management went all out to get money to buy every drug prescribed by the doctors in order to save her life. Despite all the efforts, she unfortunately passed away on Wednesday afternoon.” Ironically, as soon as information reached the doctor in his cell that his patient had died, he slumped and had to be taken to the same General Hospital.

The source continued: “The police handcuffed him to the bed where he was receiving treatment to prevent him from running away. Endurance’s friend is still there in the police cell. All we want is justice because what the doctor did was a criminal act punishable under the law”, she concluded. When Entertainment Express visited the hospital, the embattled doctor was found handcuffed to a stretcher on which he was receiving drip.

Efforts to speak with his relations who thronged the hospital proved abortive as they were engrossed in the arrangement on how to get an ambulance to take the remains of the late Endurance to Isolo, Mortuary. Speaking under condition of anonymity, a nurse at the maternity section where the late hotel worker passed away attributed her unfortunate death to poor handling of the abortion by the doctor. “Doctors are meant to save lives and not to destroy them”, she averred.

The police in the Garu-Tempane district of the Upper East Region have arrested Duut Nawang, a nurse at the Kpikpira Health Centre in connection with the death of a 20-year-old female student of the Tempane Senior High School, Georgina Kombat.

The 29-year-old male nurse, according to a DAILY GUIDE source at Garu, was arrested following a confession by a friend to the deceased, Afia, who revealed to the parents of the deceased that she and Georgina went to the suspect, Duut Nawang, for an abortion to be carried out for the deceased.

According to the source, Georgina allegedly collapsed after she was injected by the nurse and died soon after.

After a failed attempt to dump the deceased in a septic tank close to the health centre, the suspect allegedly carried the deceased on a bicycle and rode about five miles through the dark from Kpikpira to Tempane and dumped the body some 100 metres away from the girls’ hostel of Tempane Senior High School.

The police are still investigating the incident to ascertain the level of involvement of the suspect.

The Garu-Tempane Police Commander, Richard Ebo Appiah, could not be reached on phone at the time of filing this report.

Georgina’s body was found at the school around 3am on Wednesday, March 21, 2012.

Georgina Kombat’s father said his daughter left school to collect money from him at Kpikpira, a Bimoba community in the Garu-Tempane district, over the weekend, but had to stay home until Tuesday evening when he was able to raise the amount required for her.

According to him, he asked Georgina to stay and go to school on Wednesday morning since it was too late and dangerous for her to travel from Kpikpira to Tempane, about five miles away.

While the deceased was at home that Tuesday evening, she had a call on her phone from one Daniel.

A brother of the deceased’s received the call instead of Georgina herself, but the caller immediately hung up.

The phone was later handed over to the deceased by the brother and she left home to collect a book from one Bismark that evening.

As soon as she left, Afia came to the house to ask of her but was told she had left to collect a book from Bismark.

Nothing was heard about her throughout the night until the body was found on Wednesday, March 21 on the school compound.

Argentine court allows abortions in rape cases

Argentina's Supreme Court has upheld a ruling that will decriminalize abortions in cases of rape.
Tuesday's ruling will ease what has been a very strict interpretation of the tough anti-abortion laws on the books.

"The statute has been on the books more than 80 years. However, there were contradictory interpretations by lower courts throughout the country, and these interpretations, in some cases, said that women who were raped are only permitted an abortion if they are mentally challenged or demented, which is what the statute says," said Alvaro Herrero of the Association of Civil Rights. "The court made a clarification about this issue and said that in all cases in which there was rape there exists the right to an abortion."

Abortion is illegal in Argentina. As interpreted, in addition to cases of mental incapacity, the law only permitted abortions in some instances in which the mother's life was at risk.

The original case involved a 15-year-old girl who became pregnant after being raped by her stepfather. A lower court ruled in March 2010 that an abortion was permissible in cases of rape, but that decision was appealed to the nation's highest court.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court clarified that Argentina's Constitution and human rights treaties would not allow such a prohibition in cases of rape.

"On the contrary, they forbid punishing all victims of rape in accordance to the principles of equality, personal dignity, and legality," the country's center for judicial information reported.

The ruling also specified that judicial authorization is not needed before performing an abortion. The only necessary declaration is the patient's statement that she was raped, the court ruled.

Despite the country's tough anti-abortion laws, the health ministry estimates that some 460,000 abortions are performed each year in Argentina. The ministry estimated that about 100 women die each year because the procedures were not carried out with the required medical expertise.

Roberto Castaneda, a member of an Argentine pro-life group, said despite the ruling, there are other options besides abortion.

"A woman who has difficulties must have assistance. Legal, medical, psychological assistance. We have to promote the adoption system. There are thousands of couples in Argentina without children and who can't have children. It is a much more humane situation than killing," he said.

The head of Argentina's bishops conference, Monsignor Jose Maria Arancedo, said he was surprised to hear of the court's decision.

"Abortion is the suppression of an innocent life, and there does not exist any motive or reason that justifies the elimination of an innocent life, not even the unfortunate case of a rape," he said.

For deceiving his girlfriend to take abortion pills that have landed her in critical condition at the hospital, a 25 year old mechanic, Idris Oke, was on Monday arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court.

In the matter before Chief Magistrate Okeagu Azubike, Idris was charged with conspiracy and aborting the pregnancy of his girlfriend, Miss Janet Onah. The police prosecutor, Philips Akogwu, told the court that Miss Janet, a resident of Kuruduma village, Abuja, reported the case at Asokoro Police Station on February 21.

According to court document, the accused and a pharmacist deceitfully administered some drugs to Miss Janet which led to her miscarriage on February 18. "The pharmacist administered some drugs to her on the pretence that it would make her sleep," Mr. Akogwu said.

The police prosecutor informed the court that Onah had since been on admission at the National Hospital, Abuja, due to the effect of the drugs.

He told the court that the offence contravened sections 79 and 232 of the Penal Code.

On his part, Idris pleaded not guilty. He admitted that he took Miss Janet to a pharmacist but added that it was done with her consent.

"She was the person who begged me to take her to the pharmacist to get some drugs that would abort the pregnancy because she is a student and did not want the pregnancy to hinder her studies," he argued.

Following his plea, the chief magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum. He then adjourned the case to March 26 for hearing.

The KUNTANASE police have mounted a search for the arrest of Bright Appiah, a primary three teacher of Konkoma D/A primary, for his alleged role in the death of an SHS three Business student, Theresa Boakye.

Appiah reportedly impregnated the girl and later administered a substance believed to be a herbal concoction to terminate the pregnancy, resulting in her premature death.

Theresa Boakye, 19, was a native of Asisiriwa, a farming community in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti region, and a student of Beposo SHS in the same district.

According to reports, the suspect asked her to terminate the pregnancy so that she could continue her education but luck eluded the two when she passed away on October 24, 2011 after bleeding profusely.

Daily Guide gathered that the deceased was four months pregnant when she attempted to commit the abortion. It was also learnt from the deceased’s uncle, Kwame Owusu, that she failed to disclose who was responsible for the pregnancy until when she was about to die.

Daily Guide also learnt that the deceased moved from her apartment and went to stay with the suspect in his room where some of her personal belongings were found by her relations.

When contacted, the Kuntanase District Police Commander, ASP Edward Osei, confirmed the story and said the deceased’s uncle had lodged a complaint at the station.

According to him, the deceased complained of severe abdominal pains and started bleeding profusely from her private parts and was admitted to the Kuntanase General Hospital for treatment.

At the hospital, it was established that when the deceased was interrogated by a medical staff, she confessed that the suspect administered a traditional medicine to her to terminate the pregnancy.

It was however alleged that the deceased was referred to the Pramso St. Michael’s Hospital because the doctors and nurses were on strike at Kuntanase General Hospital at the time but died soon after. Meanwhile, Theresa’s body is still being kept at the Pramso St. Michael Hospital while the police are making efforts to arrest the run-away lover man
