Edo community denies backing Oshiomhole

Agbado community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State has thrown its weight behind a native of the area, Major General Charles Airhiavbere, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the next governorship election in the state.

Addressing a press conference in Benin yesterday, spokesperson of the community, Pa Wilfred Airhiavbere denied reports in the media that the community is backing the aspiration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, stressing that the report put the community in bad light.

He said the Agbado community is proud of its heritage and would never sell its conscience.

“Major General Charles Airhiavbere is an illustrious son of Agbado community. He is a great grandfather. The late Pa Airenmwangbon alongside Chief Agho Obaseki, the Iyase of Benin kingdom were the co-founders of Agbado community. And since the death of Pa Omonoyan Airhiavbere in 1985, the community has not produced another Odionwere”, he said.

The spokesman said General Airhiavbere is held in high esteem by members of Agbado community, and that they are solidly behind him on his political ambition.

Edo State Governor Employs All Female Driver For State Buses

The state governor surprised not a few persons, having mandated that ladies should be engaged as drivers for the state's public transport system, known as Edo City Transport Services (ECTS)

When Governor Oshiomhole informed the ECTS boss, Mrs Edugie Agbonlahor, early last year that he wanted a crop of girls to drive the Daewoo Luxury Buses plying the city, she was surprised, although pleased.

Without hesitation, she set to work instantly, advertising for applications. But since such a development has never been seen anywhere in Nigeria, people did not take them seriously, and this resulted in the low turnout of girls.

One other factor that brought doubts into the minds of Edolites, as Edo people are fondly called, was the fact that the advert said that they wanted girls without experience. I laughed when I heard it, and that was why I never bothered to apply. I may have got the job too, since I was qualified too , says Efemena Agbodo, a passenger at Ring Road in a voice laden with envy at the lucky ladies driving the buses.

It was fascinating to see these young women, most of them between 22 and 25 years of age, driving the long, heavy, airconditioned buses as if they were driving small cars. One of the drivers who simply identified herself as Blessing, told Sunday Mirror that though the job is stressful, she was never scared of driving on the highway.

She explained that the type of training she received has given her all the confidence she needs: Initially, I would be wondering what if something goes wrong, but as time went on, my confidence increased. I can now drive without fear.

A 28-year-old man, Kelvin Osagie, who allegedly masterminded the kidnap of his grandmother, Madam Victor Aiwerioghene, has been arrested by men from the Intelligence Unit of Zone 5 Command of the Nigeria Police, Benin, Edo State.

The suspect, police report said, colluded with others and abducted the woman from her home in Ikpoba Hill area of Benin last July.

Osagie’s arrest was made possible by information obtained by police from one of the kidnappers, Fred Omoruyi, who was earlier arrested.

Omoruyi, who had since been charged to court on a two-count charge in connection with the crime, reportedly told police investigators that Osagie made the arrangement to kidnap his paternal grandmother.

According to police sources, Omoruyi was said to have confessed to the crime, insisting that it was Osagie who contacted him and another suspect, now at large, to execute the plot.

According to a statement: “The police went after the said Kelvin Osagie, got him arrested and will charge him to court after investigation had been concluded.”

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State , yesterday, rolled out palliatives that would cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government in the state and admonished political leaders in the country learn to set aside personal political calculations in the larger interest of the polity.

The Governor in a state Broadcast, abolished all fees and levies including PTA in all public secondary schools, reduced school fees by N15,000 for under graduate students of the state-owned Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma both for indigenes and noen indigens, adding that te total value of this reduction will be paid to the University by the Edo State Government en bloc in addition to the N210 monthly subvention.

Other palliatives put in place includes, free medical treatment for pensioners and senior citizens at the age of 70 and above, 50 per cent reduction in transport fare to pupils and students, purchase of more buses and others.

Oshiomhole who noted that Nigerians rejected the removal of fuel subsidy because the public does not trust that the proceeds will be utilized judiciously, assured the people of the state that We are determined to ensure that the pains arising from the partial removal of subsidy translate to concrete gains for the generality of our people.

While appreciating the people of the state for their support and their unflinching trust, understanding during what he described as the challenging events of the past two weeks, I am deeply gratified by the appreciation of my position and role in the resolution of the crisis arising from the subsidy reduction.

For me, there are no easy solutions to the problems that confront our nation. However, to meet the multi-facetted challenges of good governance, I believe that leaders at all levels need to set aside personal political calculations in the larger interest of the polity.

Therefore, whereas it was convenient for me at this point to exploit the current issue to orchestrate my political interests, especially as elections are around the corner, the overriding interest of our country was utmost in my mind he said.

TRAGEDY struck, when not fewer than 10 persons lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident after Okada town, Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

NEWSMEN gathered that the accident, which occurred at about 12.45pm, involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus, which was said to have skidded off the road following a burst tyre.

Eye witness account said the bus lost its tyre while on high speed causing the driver to lose control of the bus, which eventually somersaulted.

According to the eyewitness, “the bus was coming from Lagos, and just after Okada town, it became uncontrollable, skid off the road and fell into a valley. This was followed by a loud noise and by the time we rushed to the scene, we found out that the bus was mangled already.”

ACN youths protest against Oshiomhole’s running mate

OVER 1000 Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) youths in Edo State, under the aegis of Edo South ACN Coalition newsmen, yesterday, staged a protest at the palace of the Oba of Benin, expressing their rejection of Dr Pius Odubu as the running mate to Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the forthcoming 2012 governorship election in the state.

The youths who also protested at the Palace of the Itsekhure (Chief Priest) of Benin Kingdom, Chief Nosakhare Itsekhure, alleged that Odubu, who is incumbent Deputy Governor of the state, had not provided any meaningful assistance to Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the past three years and therefore it would be wrong to have him as running mate to Oshiomhole in the next four years.

It would be recalled that the entire leadership of the party in the state had endorsed Oshiomhole for a second term but failed to endorse Odubu as his running mate.

However, Barr. Sunday Ogbomo, who led the protest at the palace, asserted that “the people of Edo South senatorial district have rejected Odubu as running mate to our action Governor. Throughout his eight years as member of the Federal House of Representatives, he never employed anybody even though he had the slot to employ four persons.”

“He never executed any constituency project. And when the leaders of the ACN picked him as running mate to Oshiomhole in 2007, we allowed that because we thought may be he will change. What he did was a borehole in his own father’s house in the village and nothing else. We recalled that our father the Oba of Benin sent some chiefs to plead with him to allow Etiosa Ogbewe go back to the House of Assembly for a second term but Odubu did not let him go.Even though he won the primaries.

“The head of Odubu’s community is the Okaevbo, the Okaevbo even pleaded on behalf of Etiosa but Odubu refused. Even the road project in Orhionmwon the project has been abandoned yet we have him as Deputy Governor. Apart from that, it is an open secret that each time the Comrade Governor travels, he cannot not even act on behalf of the governor. So we need a Deputy Governor that is vibrant and one that can help the Comrade Governor move the state forward” he stated.

Oshiomhole’s marks 3rd yr, dismisses N3bn claim

THE 3rd year anniversary celebration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state kicked off yesterday with an interdenominational service with Oshiomhole assuring the people of the state of more transformation in the years ahead.

Speaking at the service held at Idia College, Benin City, Oshiomhole stated that he would also ensure that there are no abandoned projects, asking the people of the state to continue to support the government in its developmental efforts.

But in a swift reaction, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr Tony Iyare, dismissed the PDP allegation that the governor earmarked N3b for the event. “Do you know what N3billion is? If the Governor has that amount of money, he will immediately think of another road to tar or build another hospital or school.”

While commending the three years of Oshiomhole, the Bishop urged the Governor to continue in his efforts, calling on the people of the state to eschew violence so as to enjoy the developmental efforts of the Governor. He however admonished the Governor to shun praise singers who according to him, were only around to see what they can benefit from the system.

1,000 ACN, CPC members join PDP in Edo

BENIN-no fewer than 1,000 members of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and Congress of Progressive Change, CPC, including a former Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. David Iyoha, weekend, dumped their parties for Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

State chairman of PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, who received the decampees at a well-attended rally in Benin City, carpeted the ACN-led government in the state over what he described as its “insensitivity” to the plight of the people by alleged “over-taxation and increased school fees” adding that the party will reduce school fees if voted into power next year.

Some of the party leaders at the rally were former Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, Senator Odion Ugbesia, Paschal Ugbome, Mr. Matthew Urhoghide and Bisi Idaomi. Others include three governorship aspirants of the party, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere(rtd.) and Mr. Jacob Idinye.

Orbih said: “The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, recently listed states that are broke and Edo State was one of them. After one year of Oshiomhole’s government, we came out to tell our people that the state is heavily indebted. CBN’s Governor had confirmed our position.

“This state had generated more money than any government internally and also received more from the Federation Account more than past government. So why are we broke?”

“Today, the state is heavily indebted because we had borrowed so much. The situation in Edo State must be redeemed. By 2012, we will have a PDP government in the state Government House. There is recklessness in the management of our resources.

“When he came into office, he promised employment for 10,000. But today the reverse is the case. Three years into ACN government, no project had been commissioned. Things must change come 2012 in this state.”

Oshiomhole’s weapon against the PDP

As the July 14, 2012 governorship election approaches in Edo State, Governor Adams Oshiomhole will be testing his political might again with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His assumption of office as governor in 2008, after a protracted legal battle, has changed the politics of the state. Ahead of the election, Oshiomhole recently got the endorsement of the leadership of his party, the ACN, for second term and also that of chairmen of the party in the 18 local government councils of the state.

The revered Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, equally commended him for his developmental efforts and tacitly expressed his support for his second term ambition.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, visited the palace of the Oba of Benin, during which he solicited the support of the Oba towards the re-election of Oshiomhole. While responding, the monarch recalled:”The last time you were in my palace, it was with the governor (Adams Oshiomhole), who then was your president.

Since then, he (Oshiomhole) has gone on to what he is today, and he has transformed the state. The rest all of you can see. Labour has offered a lot in the past and I ask you to continue being good ambassadors of the people”. Apart from that occasion , Erediuwa has persistently commended the governor while urging ACN members to reciprocate the support Oshiomhole gave during their own elections by ensuring that he was voted back to office.

Though the PDP is strategizing on how to oust the governor from office, it seems he has been able to endear himself to the hearts of the people through his developmental strides across the three senatorial districts of the state. So far, some persons have indicated interest under the PDP to battle Oshiomhole in the guber election.

Amongst them is the former governor of the state, Prof.Osarhiemen Osunbor, who was ousted by the Appeal Court ruling. Others include the former Commander, Corps of Army Finance and Accounts of the Nigerian Army, Maj.Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, Prof.Julius Ihonbvere, Barr.Ken Imasuagbon and a presenter with the African Independent Television (AIT), Mr Jacob Idinye.

However, Oshiomhole’s popularity continued to grow in the wake of the construction of roads, hospitals, schools, beautification and other developmental projects which the PDP failed to achieve while in power in Edo. As a matter of fact, the PDP credibility problem took the upswing when the people saw that development was possible in the state after all.

It was not surprising, therefore, that the comrade governor bagged four awards within a space of three weeks recently. The awards include the Leadership Newspapers ‘Governor of the Year’ and Nigerian Union of Teachers’ (NUT) ‘Best Governor’s Award’ for his outstanding contributions to the development of the education sector as well as his commitment to enhancing the welfare of teachers.

He also won the Nigeria Social Enterprise Report and Awards (the SERAs-Nigeria CSR 2011 Awards) for his strides in education, healthcare and infrastructural development which constitute the core areas of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Etsako Club 81 Award of Excellence during the activities marking the 30th anniversary of the club. With awards such as these coming when the governor is celebrating his third year in office, come November 12, 2011, it is a clear declaration that he is battle ready for the 2012 poll.

While giving an insight into how he intends to defeat the PDP in the forthcoming poll when over one hundred members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) defected to the ACN, Oshiomhole declared: “ACN represents progressive movement because it is about service rather than sharing opportunities, it is about challenges and not sharing. The dream we all share is our state must be rebuilt and our people regain their pride of place. Thank you for reinforcing our strength and the 2012 politics will be defined by issues and development.

People will vote on the basis of what they have seen and know and we will remind them of those who destroyed our dream”. He added: “ACN is a political movement for change and sustainable development. As members from one of the oldest parties in the state, join us to redefine politics and governance in our state. You have taken the right decision and we assure that you will not regret”.

The governor disclosed that his government “is determined to remain focused and play politics of development in which the people come first, second and third as against the regime when the godfather come first, second and third and when the godfather gets richer and the people get poorer”. Oshiomhole’s camp was also boosted with the entry of Henry Idahagbon, a former member of the National Executive Council of the PDP; and the former Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Nosa Adams, and their supporters into the ACN.

However, the issue of who becomes the governor’s running mate has been a subject of controversy as some leaders of the ACN, led by the South South Vice-Chairman, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, have kicked against any move to pick the current deputy governor, Dr Pius Odubu. That is why despite all the endorsements of the governor, his deputy has failed to receive the support of the leaders, which is an indication that Oshiomhole may source for another deputy.

And tactically, the governor has remained neutral in the factional war between loyalists of the deputy governor and those of Ize-Iyamu. newsmen gathered that he displayed his neutrality during a recent meeting with national and state assemblies members, when two lawmakers at the meeting openly described the rancor as regards the deputy governorship issue as unnecessary and urged Oshiomhole to pick the incumbent since he and Odubu have enjoyed a cordial relationship.

It was however learnt that the governor became furious and asked the lawmakers to stop causing confusion in the party since the reason for the meeting had nothing do with the issue of deputy governorship. He urged them to stay off the matter and allow the leadership of the party to make the decision at the appropriate time. However, while appreciating the awards bestowed on him by Etsako Club 81, Oshiomhole said: “This honor has shown that a prophet can be honored by his own people. I appreciate the honor by your award.

In 2003, I was given an award obviously for causing so much trouble for the government of the day and I told my wife (late Clara) that should I ever do it and arrested, tell them the people encouraged me to do so and I am being awarded by that. I am humbled at our modest contributions to the development of Edo State including Etsako land. That prophets are not appreciated at home is no longer true. I like to dedicate this award to my late wife whose support is unquantifiable.

I like to remember her on this occasion for her commitment and encouragement. I also want to dedicate this award to the very ordinary people; men and women across the three senatorial districts because they voted for me not on the account of my place of birth but because of my antecedents at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Many people emphasize the infrastructural developments in the state by this administration but, to me, the most achievement is the restoration of the peoples’ confidence that only them alone can entrench genuine democracy; One Man, One Vote. And that the son of a cassava farmer can rise to become anything that God has destined him to be.”

He added: “My story in government is that only God can determine the life and success of a man not any godfather. When a society runs a system where only one man decides if vacancy exists or not, that society cannot grow. Development cannot occur by miracle but in the realm of entrenching One man, One Vote. Without the fear of the electorate, good governance is impossible”.

Also in a paper entitled, “2011 elections: A post mortem”, at his investiture as the ‘Governor of the Year’ by the Leadership Newspapers, Oshiomhole appreciated the newspaper group for the award which he noted would further spur him to do more for the society. The governor, who took the audience through the nation’s democratic journey since 1999, insisted that only credible polls can guarantee the future of the country.

While acknowledging that the 2011 elections were not perfect, he, however, submitted that the exercise recorded a substantial improvement over those of 2007. To sustain democracy, Oshiomhole posited that key players must be mindful of their utterances, while there is need for the overhauling of the Independent National Electoral Commission to make it a truly unbiased umpire.

Many injured in Edo drivers’ clash

Ten persons were injured yesterday in Benin City, the Edo State capital, when members of the Drivers’ Welfare Scheme (DWS) and a revenue collection team, headed by Comrade Tony Kabaka, clashed with members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

There was sporadic shooting. Many traders hurriedly closed their shops and fled to safety. The clash disrupted activities around Mission road and the New Benin Market. Live bullets were brought in cartons and loaded into double barrel guns.

A source said trouble started when RTEAN members went to motor-parks to collect dues from their members, but were resisted and beaten up by Kabaka and DWS leaders. Kabaka said RTEAN had been banned from collecting revenues in the state and they were surprised when RTEAN members came to the motor-parks yesterday morning to collect money from drivers.

He said they had reported to security agencies in the past, but nothing was done. DWS President Comrade Henry Okaka said they were protesting the return of RTEAN to motor-parks and would resist any attempt by RTEAN to impose dues on drivers.

A source at Oredo Local Government said RTEAN has not been authorised to collect revenue for the local council. RTEAN Publicity Secretary Chief Ben Okpokunu said they went to the parks to collect dues from their members as enshrined in their constitution, and not to collect revenue for Oredo local council.

He said: “We have never stressed that we must collect revenue for the local council. The claim that we invaded motor-parks is untrue. If we decide to retaliate this unprovoked attack on our men, there will be blood-bath in Benin.” Leaders of all parties in the dispute were invited for questioning at New Benin Police Station. Soldiers and policemen later restored peace in the area

ACN endorses Oshiomhole for 2nd Term

BENIN— Leadership of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in the three senatorial districts of Edo State, weekend, backed Governor Adams Oshiomhole for the 2012 gubernatorial election in the state.

Party leaders in Benin City, led by the state chairman, Mr. Thomas Okosun, at a meeting, endorsed the governor for a second term after reviewing his achieve-ments.

He stressed the need to return Governor Oshiomhole to office in the July 14, 2012 governorship election. Other leaders at the meeting were Dr. Pius Odubu, Deputy Governor of the state; Chief Tom Ikimi, former Foreign Affairs Minister; Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, ACN South-South Vice-Chairman; Senator Ehigie Uzamere; Deacon Domin-go Obende; Mr. Pally Iriase, House of Reps member and former Secre-tary to the State Govern-ment; and Mr. Charles Idahosa, among others.

Okosun said: “The governorship election is around the corner. We have two Senators, seven members of the House of Representatives and 19 members in the state House of Assembly. It means that we have a challenge to return the Governor in the next election.”

Mr. Iriase and former Speaker of the House, Mr. Bright Omokhodion, spoke on behalf of the people of Edo North and Central, respectively. On his part, Chief Ikimi urged the people to shun the rumour of infighting and quarrels in the CAN. He urged everyone to work towards reconciling aggrieved members.

Edo voters sing new song ahead 2012

EDO State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has received commendations from a cross section of editors from both the print and broadcast media across the country for having the will power to open up the rural communities with the construction of several networks of roads barely two years and ten months in office. “What we saw is a different Edo State all together.

The governor has succeeded in distributing roads to the rural communities,” the editors who were in Benin City for the 7th All Nigeria Editors Conference disclosed after a tour of road projects embarked upon by the state government. There is no doubt that the people living in the rural communities in Edo State now have a different story to tell. In the past, it was a story of despair and disappointment, due to decades of criminal neglect, marginalisation and deceit by previous administrations.

As at this moment, the former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Oshiomhole is putting smiles on the faces of the people, particularly the rural folks who have not been taken into consideration in the developmental plans of previous administrations. The office of the governor, according to Comrade Oshiomhole, must be used to touch and change the lives of the people and he believes that when the various communities are linked with motorable roads, their economy is integrated into the national and state economies.

In all sectors of the economy, education, tourism, health, water, electricity and the civil service, the Oshiomhole-led administration has succeeded in making a positive statement. Take Benin City, for instance, the capital of the state has been transformed into a modern city from its unenviable status as a neglected ancient city. The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN) who was in Benin City for the 7th All Nigeria Editors Conference, on arrival, said he saw from the air before landing at the Benin Airport that there were remarkable changes in the landscape.

“From what I have seen so far, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has done well. The essence of democracy is for people to benefit from the dividends, which the governor is providing for the people in the state,” the NBA president disclosed when he paid a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House. During his first year in office, the governor had concentrated development projects in Benin City, the state capital, with a promise that after the first year, focus will be shifted to the entire state, which will be transformed, into a construction site.

And, true to his promise, no area of the state has been neglected, especially in the construction of roads and provision of those basic amenities, such as schools and water. Edo State governor had consistently reiterated that his administration is people- oriented and there is no doubt that the rural folk is overwhelmed with the rapid road transformation that has taken place in their communities. They could not conceal their joy seeing bulldozers, tippers and heavy-duty earth moving equipment in their communities for the construction of their roads that were hitherto abandoned.

You could see the excitement in their faces, apparently because when these roads are commissioned, they will link and integrate the remote communities with the city centres and thereby facilitate trade and development. The people have seen, for the first time, reputable contractors like Skaaf Construction Company, RCC, Hartland Construction, Borini Prono and Company Nigeria Limited, and a host of others working day and night to complete their assignments for which they have already been paid.

The comrade governor who led the editors on a tour of some of the road construction sites in the state took a long walk down the dualised Auchi Polytechnic Road in Etsako West and they saw the excitement of the people who showered encomiums on the government for transforming the town into a mega city. They also visited the Usogun Primary School in Auchi, which was reconstructed, by the state government, the Jattu-Auchi road, Jattu-South Ibie road, Jattu-Afowa-Iyora-Apana road, the Iyamho-Iyora road and the Jattu Ayua roads, as well as the Iyamho Primary School.

The construction of the Iyamho and Iyora roads was the best thing that had happened to both communities because with the construction of the roads the movement of goods will become easier, the relationship between them will be strengthened. In the words of Comrade Oshiomhole, the reason the village people are poor is because they are not integrated with the cities and they also lack educational institutions. He has therefore ensured that modern secondary and primary schools are built across the state, because, according to him, “any government that cannot provide education for the young ones is doomed.”

The people in the rural communities have expressed appreciation to the State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for opening up their villages with the construction of several networks of roads, which were hitherto abandoned by past administrations. At the Afowa- Iyora- road in Etsako West, a trader, Madam Florence Agono said the road will enhance commercial activity, which was lacking in the past and she prayed for the governor for long life for remembering them.

In the words of Alhaji Sule Braimah, from Jattu - Ayua, “we have never seen this kind of government presence and we can now take our farm produce to the markets with ease, because the road was terribly bad in the past.” The state governor who told the Editors that government is determined to link the rural communities with the urban towns through the construction of network of roads said the people were informed in the past that due to the difficult terrain nothing could be done on some of the roads.

The governor noted that he is satisfied with the extent of work done on all the roads going on in the three senatorial districts of the state, especially those that are newly constructed, to provide access to the rural communities. Comrade Oshiomhole who expressed total commitment to the development of all parts of the state said the joy in the faces of members of the communities where the projects are sited shows that they appreciate what God is using him to do.

According to Mr. Steve Ayorinde, Managing Director of National Mirror Newspapers, while expressing his satisfaction with the efforts of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in the transformation going on in the State, the developmental strides achieved by the governor are impressive. ”We have visited the rural communities in Edo State and we are happy with the way the governor is opening up the communities.

It is apparent that if there have been other leaders like Oshiomhole, Nigeria would have been a better place,” he noted. According to him, if the governor does not go for a higher office, then his second tenure will witness tremendous transformation. In the words of Mr Femi Adesina, Deputy Managing Director of the Sun Newspapers, the roads are of high quality, noting that what they had seen was a true reflection of the dividends of democracy in Edo State.

The governor was commended by a cross section of the Editors including the Editor of Sunday Sun, Funke Egbemode, for having the will power to open up the rural communities. ”What we saw is a different Edo State all together. The Governor has succeeded in distributing roads to the rural communities,” they added.
