My Pikin Syrup was produced with deadly chemical

THE National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said on Tuesday that investigations showed that Batch No 02008 of ``My Pikin’’ teething syrup was produced with a deadly chemical.

NAFDAC’s Director of Establishment Inspection, Mrs Hauwa Keri, spoke while testifying at a Federal High Court, Lagos, in the case filed by the agency against the owner of Barewa Pharmaceutical Industries, Kola Okunlola.

Okunlola, with two of his employees, Adeyemo Abiodun and Egbele Eromosele, as well as Barewa Pharmaceutical Industries, had been dragged to court in March 2009 on a six-count charge based on the production of the fake teething syrup, which led to the death of some children.

In her testimony at the resumed trial, Keri told the court that the syrup contained a deadly chemical called Dithylene Glycol.

She said that batch number 02008 of the product was contaminated and was produced at the time a school certificate holder employed by the pharmaceutical company purchased a keg of Dithylene Glycol and wrongly labeled it as Prophlene Glycol.

'We also established that the quality control officer of Barewa did not carry out the mandatory identification test for all raw materials before production as required by law.

'Even worse was the discovery that the production manager went ahead to produce batch Number 02008 with only a verbal clearance from the Quality Control Officer,'
she said.

Keri said that she was asked by the then Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili, to investigate the matter when the Chief Pharmacist of the Ahmadu Bello University, Mr Salisu Ibrahim, called to inform the agency that some children had died after taking the syrup.

'I immediately dispatched a team of investigators who interviewed the chief pharmacist, and brought back remains of the syrup and then sent my officers in Kaduna to buy the teething syrup off the shelf, which was then sent to the laboratory.

She said she also sent staff members to University College Hospital, Ibadan, and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital to get samples of the syrup before proceeding to test the samples.

`The first result from the laboratory had us coming from Abuja to Lagos, to Baruwa Pharmaceutical Industries and made us to take specific action of sealing off the factory,” she said.

Keri also told the court that investigations showed that the children who died after taking the drug had similar symptoms of renal failure which was characterised by their inability to pass urine, resulting in their death.

Counsel to the defendants, Mr Osaro Eghobamien, asked the court to order the witness to furnish him with results of the laboratory test to enable him to conduct his cross-examination.

Justice Okechukwu Okeke granted his prayer and adjourned the case to Feb. 16 for continuation of the hearing.

Pen removed from woman’s stomach after 25 years

A bizarre doctor’s visit turned up a 25-year-old pen in the pit of an elderly woman’s stomach – and when it removed, it was still usable.

The 76-year-old woman, whose story was reported in the British Medical Journal Case Reports, was seeing a gastrointestinal specialist for stomach-related problems, including weight loss and diarrhea.

She was diagnosed with severe diverticulosis, but it wasn’t until after her diagnosis that her doctor noticed “a linear foreign body” in an X-ray of her stomach. Upon questioning, the patient remembered she had once accidentally swallowed a black felt-tip pen.

She was using the pen to poke her tonsils, examining them with a handheld mirror as she stood on stairs, a report from gastroenterologist Dr. Oliver Walters explained.

While doing this, she lost her balance and stumbled down a couple steps, swallowing the pen in the process. At the time, X-rays didn’t show any evidence of the object in her stomach, and the issue was forgotten.

Deadly bird disease trichomonosis 'spreads to Europe'

A disease that is killing greenfinches and chaffinches in the UK has now spread to Europe, scientists report. A paper in the journal Ecohealth confirms that the disease has been found in Finland, Norway and Sweden and is at risk of moving further afield.

The disease, called trichomonosis, is caused by a parasite and was first seen in finches in the UK in 2005. Since then, the country's greenfinches have declined by 35% and chaffinch populations have fallen by 7%. Becki Lawson, a wildlife veterinarian at the Zoological Society for London (ZSL) and lead author of the paper, said:

Trichomonosis has emerged as a very serious threat to these birds, so it is very important that vets and ornithologists collaborate to determine whether we might see further spread and to monitor the impact of the parasite on wild bird populations across Europe." Overdose of Acetaminophen causes liver failure-J&J Cuts Maximum Tylenol Dose

Johnson & Johnson said, July 28, 2011, that it's reducing the
maximum daily dose of its Extra Strength Tylenol
pain reliever to lower risk of accidental overdose.
Johnson & Johnson said Thursday that it's reducing the maximum daily dose of its Extra Strength Tylenol pain reliever to lower risk of accidental overdose from acetaminophen, its active ingredient and the top cause of liver failure.

The company's McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division said the change affects Extra Strength Tylenol sold in the U.S. — one of many products in short supply in stores due to a string of recalls.

Starting sometime this fall, labels on Extra Strength Tylenol packages will now list the maximum daily dose as six pills, or a total of 3,000 milligrams, down from eight pills a day, or 4,000 milligrams. Beginning next year, McNeil will also reduce the maximum daily dose for its Regular Strength Tylenol and other adult pain relievers containing acetaminophen, the most widely used pain killer in the country.

Besides Tylenol, acetaminophen is the active ingredient in the prescription painkillers Percocet and Vicodin and in some nonprescription pain relievers, including NyQuil and some Sudafed products. It's found in thousands of medicines taken for headaches, fever, sore throats and chronic pain.

But people taking multiple medicines at once don't always realize how much acetaminophen they are ingesting, partly because prescription drug labels often list it under the abbreviation "APAP."

Two years ago, a panel of advisers to the Food and Drug Administration called for sweeping restrictions to prevent accidental fatal overdoses of acetaminophen.

"Acetaminophen is safe when used as directed," Dr. Edwin Kuffner, McNeil's head of over-the-counter medical affairs, said in a statement.

Excessive use of acetaminophen can cause liver damage. In the U.S., it's blamed for about 200 fatal overdoses and sends 56,000 people to the emergency room each year.
Extra Strength Tylenol is manufactured at a J&J factory in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, where production has been decreased for months because the FDA, concerned about manufacturing and quality problems, is requiring additional reviews and approvals before medicines can be shipped. J&J said shipments of Extra Strength Tylenol should ramp up in the latter part of this year and throughout next year.(www.todaysgist.com)
