CYNTHIA’S M**RDER: Lawyers hail FG plan to ban `r**pe drug’

Lawyers and social critics on Friday commended the Federal Government’s move to ban the sale of the ‘date rape drug’, allegedly used to k**l Miss Cynthia Osokogu.

They gave the commendation in separate interviews in Lagos.

The Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday in Abuja resolved to ban the sale of rophynol drug.

`Rohypnol’, clinically known as Flunitrazepam, a sedative with hypnotic effect was used to lure late Osokogu to complacency and later k**lled.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the government planned to ban the drug because of the need to curb its disastrous use.

He said that the Act No. 43 of 1989, which established the National Drug Formulary and Essential Drugs List, empowers it to prohibit importation and manufacturing of any drug not on the list.

A Lagos based lawyer and founding member of the African in Democracy and Good Governance (ADG), Mr Edwin Nebolisa, said the decision appropriate.

He said that the ban was informed by the ugly trend of the abuse of the drug by the youths, and stressed the need to check the excesses of youths, which was becoming worrisome.

He also said that pharmacy stores and hospitals should be discouraged from dispensing such drugs because it had become a means of facilitating incidence of r**pe.

A facilitator with the Legal Defence and Assistant Project (LEDAP), Mr Noel Brown, also aligned with the decision of the government and advocated the ban of other sedative drugs.

Brown described as alarming made in which youths take to drugs in quest for adventure.

“R**pe, by its nature, constituted an act of gender violence. Employing the use of sedatives is simply devilish and must be treated with the highest level of disdain,’’ he said.

He advised parents to watch the types of company their wards keep, stressing that evil acts pollute good manners.

Mr Spurgeon Ataene, a lawyer, said that it was rather inconceivable that teenage boys had formed the habit of luring girls with the use of sedative.

“They do this to weaken their victim and get away with the heinous acts. Eventually, some of these drugs end up claiming the lives of their victims,’’ he said.

He, therefore, called for full implementation of the ban, adding that government should decisively deal with offenders who go against the policy.

In August, four accused persons, Echezona Nwabufo 33, Ejike Olisaeloka, 23, Orji Osita, 32, and Maduakor Chukwunonso, 25, were paraded by the police in Lagos for the murder of Osokogu.

They told the police, how they met, drugged and strangled their victim, in order to steal her money.

The accused, currently in prison custody, were arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ court in September for the offence.

Arowolo: Murdered banker was stabbed 76 times

Lagos State Chief pathologist, Professor Oladapo Obafunwa Monday disclosed before an Ikeja High Court that he discovered more than 76 stab wounds on the body of the late Skye Bank staff, Mrs. Titilayo Omozoje, allegedly m***dered by her husband, Akolade Arowolo last year.

Obafunwa who was testifying before Justice Lateefa Okunnu on his observations while carrying out autopsy on the late banker, told the judge that she had “minimum of 76 stab wounds that were inflicted on her body, including injuries on the face, chest, left and right upper limbs.”

Led in evidence by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Mrs. Olabisi Ogungbesan, Obafunwa who doubles as the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, revealed that there was concentration of stab wounds from her chest to her abdomen on the left side.

According to him, Titilayo’s remains were identified on July 4, 2011, but the autopsy which lasted more than five hours took place on July 6, adding that during his internal examination of the body, he found “various wounds consistent with wounds from sharp weapon with a single edge blade as well as a double edge blade.”

He noted that the wounds affected the “left eye, right eye, upper chest area, right chest and collar bone left armpit. It also included a 10 x 5cm rectangular area that has multiple individual injuries on the left side of her chest and breast over lying the heart.”

Obafunwa who gave graphic account of his observations through slides of still images that was burn on a Compact Disc stated that the autopsy revealed a gaping wound which was “revealed as a black hole in the chest region.”

Some of the still pictures showed deep cuts on the “stomach wall” after the inside of the stomach was pushed to a side to allow for the autopsy.

He further said the forensic investigations revealed that the injuries could not have been self inflicted as the penetration was from the chest to the back and there were stab wounds to the stomach wall.

According to him, “the chest wall was lost due to multiple stab wounds, there was a damage to the diaphragm, left side of the liver, breast area and repeated stab wounds to the lungs and intestines”.

He eventually summed up his autopsy report and concluded that “her death was caused by multiple injuries in the chest and abdomen due to multiple sharp wounds and long forced trauma”.

On his examinations on the deceased’s husband, the pathologist said that there were wounds on his hand and abdomen and he also had a “limping gait which he admitted may be because he jumped to the ground from the fourth floor of his apartment”.

He  explained that the 12 injuries he examined on him were not penetrating but superficial, adding that two of the wounds might fall into the category of defence wounds, adding the 12 injuries he examined were not penetrating but superficial and two of them might fall into the category of defence wounds though not all the injuries fall into the time frame the incident was said to have occurred as they might have been on the body earlier.

In  his response, Arowolo’s counsel, Olanrewaju Ajanaku, during cross-examinations said that it was the pathologist that inflicted  new stab wounds on the deceased when the corpse was in his custody, which was denied by the witness.

Further hearing was adjourned till October 22, 2012 when the prosecution is expected to take its last witness.

We Are Not Responsible For The K**llings In Mubi –Boko Haram

The dreaded Islamic sect wrecking havic in the North, Boko Haram has denied k**lling about 40 students in Mubi, Adamawa State.

“We have no business with students or student politics. If students are our target we would have k**lled them randomly on sight and in their school and not sneak on them in the creeping darkness in an area occupied by both students and residents.”

A man, who claimed to be a senior member of the Islamic sect, told Premium Times on Tuesday that his group had nothing to do with the k**llings. He said if the sect wanted to attack educational facilities, it would have gone for structures and not students.

The Boko Haram man said, “What would have been our target as far as I am concerned would have been the building and property of the institution, since it is owned by the government. At least, by now other students elsewhere would have been attacked if students are our concern.”

He said the mode of attack was not characteristic of the sect’s numerous attacks.

“Several statements by our spokesman and Imam in the past have made it clear who our enemies are. I don’t have to repeat it here. I don’t think anybody among us has the time to draw up a list or read it out before executing the students.”

The group’s denial throws another controversy into the likely perpetrators of the dastardly act. Some of the murdered students were shot while others were slaughtered. Security agencies are already investigating the criminal act.

It would be recalled that Gunmen had last week invaded the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi and the state university located in the town and k**lled 40 of the students in a gruesome attack.

Ugo Ozuah allegedly shot dead by police just 5days after his wedding

Ugo Ozuah was allegedly shot by men of the Nigerian police force in front of the UPS office on the Gbagada Express way on Thursday September 20th. He died early this morning at a hospital in Lagos.

Ugo just got married last Saturday September 15th, 2012. Details as to what really happened that Thursday night are sketchy but according to friends of the late businessman, he was at the expressway with another friend trying to flag down a taxi around 9 at night, when policemen pulled up and shot him twice in the chest at close range.

They said he was not resisting arrest, he wasn't arguing with the police, he was not asked to identify himself, he was just standing there with a friend and got k**lled for no reason. Sounds crazy to me!

The IG of police has said the men that k*lled the newly married man were not policemen...but they were wearing police uniform, so who were they? This is truly sad, and quite unfortunate! I can't even imagine what his wife would be going through now. Hopefully, Ugo's family will get justice for this senseless k*ll*ng!

Wickenedness – Chef Admits to Slow-Cooking Wife’s Body for four days After K**lling Her

A California chef has admitted to the m*rder of his wife and, even more gruesomely, to disposing of the body in an appropriate fashion: by slow-cooking her for four days. That’s what a jury is hearing in the Southern California trial of David Viens, who is accused of k**ll*ng his 39-year-old wife Dawn on October 18, 2009. Investigators were never able to find her body, and new audiotapes being played for the court shed light on the reason why they may never be able to.

According to NBC , the 49-year-old chef at the former Thyme Contemporary CafĂ© in Lomita, Calif., reportedly confessed to two detectives in March 2011, detailing how he allegedly used his kitchen skills to butcher his wife’s body. He then allegedly put the 105-pound woman’s remains in a metal drum, added water, and turned up the heat.

“I took some, some things like weights that we use and I put them on the top of her body, and I just slowly cooked it and I ended up cooking her for four days,” Viens said on the tape. Dawn allegedly died when her husband, after an argument, tied up her arms and legs and put duct tape over her mouth.

He said he had no idea what to do when he found her dead the next morning – so he seems to have taken a page out of his cookbook. “I cooked her four days, I let her cool, I strained it out,” he explained in the confession. His confession notes that he mixed her remains with cooking grease at restaurant.

He said he stuffed other body parts into garbage bags and tossed it out with the trash. The only part remaining, he stated on the tape, was her sk**ll, which was supposedly stashed in his mother’s attic, though investigators were unable to find it after a search. Viens has pleaded not guilty to k**ll*ng his wife. But the tapes, recorded in March 2011, reveal Viens’ confession to the murder.

He gave the interview to two detectives while being treated at a Los Angeles hospital after an alleged suicide attempt. In February 2011, Viens jumped off an 80-foot cliff on the Pacific coast after evidence was released that implicated him in his wife’s death. Still ailing from the jump, he has attended the trial in a wheelchair.

LATEST UPDATE OF THE MAN CAUGHT WITH D*AD BABY IN SUITCASE

On Sunday September 16th I put up a story about a man who was caught with a d*ad baby in a suitcase .

Now the police is saying that dead child found inside the man's suitcase was actually the man's son.

The man has been identified as an Abuja-based welder named Usman Inuwa and the d*ad baby as Goodluck Inuwa.

Usman admitted k**lling the child but didn't say why other than the child's mother left them a few weeks before the murder. Neighbours think he might have k**lled the little boy by mistake or while high on drugs. The police are investigating. Truly sad!

58 Year Old Woman Strangles Friend To Death For Snatching her lover 16 years ago

A 58-year old woman, Josephine Jacob, has been arrested and charged to a Lagos court for allegedly strangling her friend, Mrs. Margret Ndidi, 59, in their home at Shasha, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

This happened 16 years after Josephine’s bitter experience of losing a lover to Margret whom he married. Josephine reportedly went inside Margret’s one room apartment at 19, Omo Olore Street, Mosalashi Bus Stop, Shasha, when she was sleeping and strangled her.

She was arrested and arraigned before YabaMagistrate’s Court where she is facing murder charge. We gathered from the residents that Josephine bore grudge against her over what happened 16 years ago between them. It was learnt that the marriage of both Josephine and the late Margret later broke down and they both became divorcees.

“ She has been blaming Margret for her condition because she snatched her lover 16 years ago,” a source said. Though they later reconciled and became friends again and started living together at their two-room rented apartment they shared, unknown to Margret, her friend was still nursing the pain and had not forgiven her.

So, in August this year, Josephine allegedly went inside Margret’s room where she was sleeping and chocked her neck and strangled her. When the woman died, she started shouting for neighbours to come and help her, saying that Margret had died on her bed.

After Margret was rushed to a hospital, a doctor certified her dead. But the hospital management discovered that her neck had bruises and wound. It was suspected that she was strangled. The matter was reported at Shasha Police station and Josephine was arrested and detained.

The police preliminary investigation also revealed that she was strangled. The matterwas transferred to SCID, Panti, Yaba and Josephine’s two daughters were also arrested.

She was charged to court for murder under Section 221 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011. Her plea was not taken. The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. J. Ugbormaikoordered that her file should be duplicated and sent to DPP for advice. No date was fixed for hearing.

In another incident, a 22-year old man, Afeez Oyewole, has been arraigned before aTinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, for allegedly stabbing Taiwo Adeyemi whom he claimed was having affairs with his wife. Oyewole was said to have committed the offence on 9 September, 2012 at 92, Old Aroloya Street on Lagos Island.

We gathered that Oyewole confronted Adeyemi when he got wind of his alleged amorous affairs with his wife. This resulted in a fight.Oyewole in the process, allegedly took a broken bottle and stabbed his wife’s allegedlover in the face.

Adeyemi subsequently lost one of his eyes as a result of the severity of the stab on his face.Arraigning the defendant before Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, police prosecutor, Superintendent of Police, Augustine Orji, informed the court that Oyewole alleged that the complainant had been pestering hiswife for an affair for quite a while.

The prosecutor said the offence is punishable under Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011. When the charge was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by Magistrate Martins Owumi inthe sum of N200,000 with two sureties. The case has been adjourned till 26 September, 2012 for further hearing.

CYNTHIA: Growing apprehension over social media freedom

Following the recent gruesome murder of Cynthia Osokogu by people she met on a social media platform, many Nigerians have canvassed the need to regulate the unlimited freedom people have to social networking media.

THE emergence of social media like Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry Messenger and YouTube have changed the face of media practice by making information sharing easier, faster and quicker. But this is not without its demerits. Social media has become a threat to the ethics of media practice and good governance because of its accessibility and absolute freedom. Every freedom carries a responsibility.

Even in advanced democracies where we all believe good governance is practised, there is no absolute freedom. I, therefore, believe that there must be a measure to check the negative tendencies of the social media in our country.’’ Cynthia…lured through Facebook and murdered and murdered and Facebook founder: Mark Zukerberg It was on this note that the Senate President, Senator David Mark kicked off a two-day retreat for Senate Press Corps in Umuahia, Abia State two months ago.

The Senate President said the check became necessary because people now use social media to demean their leaders. He added that there was no opportunity for retraction of information in such media. The position of the Senate President, however, attracted criticisms from various quarters, especially from those, who noted that social media platforms are a mechanism for ordinary citizens to assess the performance of their leaders. On the heels of the condemnations, were several posts on Facebook, which called for an Occupy David Mark movement, as a way of checkmating the suggestion. For instance, a particular post on Saharareporters read thus: “ATTENTION: Occupy David Mark.

The Senate President must be stopped from his moves to restrict the use of social media in Nigeria, as it has been done in militarised countries of the world. He has been quoted as saying the social media is being used to insult leaders.

We are not in North Korea, this is a democracy. Occupy his telephone line and help save our only freedom of expression”. Another social media platform, Nairaland also had a post which read: “We now have citizen journalists. To me that’s a big improvement for the masses. The revolution in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya would have been impossible to organise without the social media. If someone commits what could pass for a crime, by all means get the person and sue him. They do it all the time in US and UK.

Nothing is wrong with that. There is a difference between slander and personal opinion. I can say Mr President is silly based on my personal observation of his conduct but I should be ready to prove it if I say that he embezzled 10 billion naira. Now, let me ask, why are they so concerned.

“Are we doing them any real damage? Are they not still stealing our monies despite our Nairaland and other nonsense web where we helplessly vent our anger? Do your torturers have the right to tell you not to scream and cry?’’ Barely two months after the call by the Senate President, the nation was faced with the bizarre murder of Cynthia Osokogu, made possible by a social media platform, Facebook.

For those, who had attacked and even supported the Senate President’s position, the Cynthia saga was a reminder of earlier calls, by Mark and others, for a law to regulate the social media. The late Cynthia, it would be recalled, was the last and only daughter of Major General Frank Osokogu and his wife Joy.

A business woman and student, the 24- year-old was declared missing on July 22, a few weeks to her 25th birthday. She came into Lagos to purchase goods for her boutique and also keep a date with a few Facebook friends who had allegedly paid her air fares. She was allegedly lured to a hotel in FESTAC where she was killed.

Her alleged killers were said to be her Facebook friends who were part of a syndicate which lures young women to Lagos, robs them of their possessions and murders them. Cynthia was their sixth victim. She was allegedly drugged, robbed and strangled. All forms of identification were taken off her at the time of her death. She was even reported to be a call-girl who died in the ‘line of duty’.

Police the social media platforms With the trial of Cynthia’s alleged killers still on-going, Vanguard Features investigations reveal a growing concern over the use of social media networks and the need to regulate the use of social media in the country. Only recently, the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, lamented the mischievous use of the social media by some Nigerians.

He spoke at the 20th anniversary of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC in Abuja, He decried the unwholesome information and pictures of teenagers posted on Facebook, which are sometimes used to tarnish the image of some innocent Nigerians. Also corroborating Maku’s call for a regulatory framework, Chief Emeke Ndige, told VF that it is regrettable that the merits of social media are being consumed by its disadvantages.

He called on the regulatory bodies to check the trend, adding that concerned agencies should come up with laws regulating the freedom in social media usage. “It is a sad development, and we should all rise to do everything within the ambit of the law to checkmate this trend. It was unfortunate that the young lady ended in such manner. But it has come with a purpose because the law would now become so responsive to the need to police the social media platforms.

They have to be policed in order to create order in its usage, because there is so much freedom there, ‘’ he stated. Continuing, Ndige said: ‘’I am not against any form of liberty; as a lawyer we support people’s inalienable rights, but that right should not infringe on other people’s life. So NCC and other concerned agencies should come in.

But that is not all, the law enforcement agencies and the judiciary should ensure that any social media suspect is prosecuted to a logical conclusion to serve as a deterrent to others. In other countries, cyber criminals are prosecuted by the law’’. Also speaking on the need for cyber security in the country, the Managing Partner of Okoro&Okoror Chambers, Chief Eidonogie Isiwele, told VF, that there was nothing wrong with the unlimited freedom in social media.

He explained that what is needed is to create a secured future for the youths. ‘’I am not holding brief for anyone, but you will agree that most cyber related crimes in Nigeria are driven by poverty and state of hopelessness. A lot of people have no future in this country because of the collapse of the social system, hence surviving in Nigeria, to them, becomes survival of the fittest.

The situation made the people to embrace internet crimes, but that notwithstanding, the law should be preventive on social media crime,” he said As far as Isiwele is concerned: ‘’Relevant laws should be put in place, but the people’s right to social media should not be stopped like what obtains in few countries where their laws are draconian as regards to social media.

“I know that the Federal Government made attempts to curb the excesses of social media and its growing influence early this year; it is in order because it would reduce the soaring rate of cyber crimes in the country,’’ he posited According to him: ‘’Cyber criminals are already exploiting vulnerabilities and loopholes in national and regional legislation, there is evidence that they are shifting their diverse operations to countries where appropriate and enforcement laws are not yet in place’’.

A 2008 report by the President of Global Network for Cyber Solutions, Dr. Chris Uwaje, stressed the need for government to seek the advice of experts in the field of information technology. ‘’If Nigeria knows IP and cyber security issues, they should domicile them at the footstep of the professionals in the CPN, the NCS and ATCON.

These are people who have been trained in the area of informatics and information technology development; they should be the experts advising government,’’ the report said Continuing, Uwagie declared : ‘’ How can we have a nation that does not have an IT adviser to the President? And you want to safeguard your country from digital attack.

There must be a Special Assistant to the Office of Mr. President, who would be a senior adviser on information technology. These are the things that need to be put in place in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is very strategically imperative that we need to do as fast as we can’’.

According to him: ‘’ There is no reason why we should not have an Institute of Cybercrime Monitoring; there is no reason why we cannot have Cyber Engineering in our institutions; there is no reason why we should not inculcate the cybersecurity curriculum from primary school upwards.

Just the same way we used to have the civic lessons of old, cybersecurity and cybercrime can be introduced at the primary and secondary schools levels’’. Vanguard Features recalls a recent report on Aljazzeera titled: “Dutch boy sentenced in Facebook murder case”.

According to the report, the 15-year-old Dutch boy was sentenced to a year in juvenile detention after he confessed to killing a schoolgirl over a row that appears to have begun on Facebook, the social-networking site. Jinhua K was 14 when he fatally stabbed Joyce “Winsie” Hau at her home. Jinhua was further convicted by the court for attempting to kill his victim’s father. ‘’The case, known in the Netherlands as the Facebook murder, caused widespread debate about the role of social media in violent crimes.

The court said the boy did not know the victim and had murdered her “at the request or instructions of others”. Dutch media reported that the 15-year-old victim had argued for weeks with two friends on the social-networking site before they allegedly asked the defendant, who was 14 at the time, to kill her. He was offered a 1,000-euro payment, the media reported.

Cynthia's murder: Press release from the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria

This concerns the two pharmacists arrested in connection with Cynthia Osokogu's murder. Read it below

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) joins millions of Nigerians to empathize with the family of the late Cynthia Osokogu who was lured by friends she met on facebook to Lagos where she was brutalized and eventually k*lled.

We also commend the Nigeria Police for the professional investigation that led to the arrest of the two young men who admitted openly to have committed the heinous crime.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) is interested in a diligent and focused investigation of this murder which continues to attract so much interest from Nigerians to the extent that all found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law, while innocent people are not unjustly arraigned, prosecuted and punished.

We note with concern the arraignment of two young Pharmacists who were charged along with the confessed suspects for rape, armed robbery, murder and administering of obnoxious substances. These are weighty charges that reflect the gravity of the offences that led to the d*ath of this promising lady. We at Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) indeed perceive this loss as a great one to the Osokogus, friends, colleagues and all Nigerians.

The PSN after a critical appraisal of all issues at stake wishes to reflect thus:
1) Pharmacists as responsible professionals and as legitimate custodians of medicines would continue to champion safe, responsible and rational use of medicines in Nigeria. Our projects and programmes in the last few years have always been geared towards the promotion of safe use of medicines. Having said this, it is important to realize that all medicines are poisons with inherent tendencies for abuse and misuse.

Pharmacists have always exercised due diligence, caution and professional judgment in dispensing and sales of medicines. But beyond this, it is difficult to know what a person intends to do or does with the medicine after purchase especially for a premeditated criminal act that involved use of chains, padlocks, tape and other dangerous weapons.

Information available to us indicate:
a. Pharmacist Chukwunonso Maduakor was on duty in Oxpharm in the morning of Monday August 20, 2012. A gentleman approached him and requested to buy Rohypnol. Nonso asked him for a prescription and he said he does not have one. The gentleman begged and pleaded with him that he really needed it with paracetamol.

Pharm. Nonso considered his request on compassionate grounds and dispensed to him one (1) card of 10 tablets of flunitrazapam along with one (1) card of Paracetamol. The gentleman goes out of the pharmacy, and then came in again with other persons, arrested Nonso and accused him of selling drug without prescription. They then took him to the Police station, he made statement and was detained for six (6) days in Festac Police Area Command.

On the 7th day they transferred him to Panti from where he was taken to a Magistrate Court and was charged for conspiracy, murder, armed robbery, rape and administering obnoxious substances to Miss Cynthia Osokogu who was k*lled by two known persons a month earlier in July 2012.

b. The second Pharmacists, Pharm. Osita Orji is a Locum Pharmacist with Oxpharm and works evening shifts. The police visited Oxpharm on 21 August 2012 and requested to see Osita. When he got to the station, they alleged that he was the Pharmacist on duty when the suspected killer of Cynthia claimed they bought Rohypnol from Oxpharm. Osita made statement that he did not know the murderers, could not recall meeting them or selling Rohypnol to them and if they ever bought the Rohypnol from him while on duty that they must have presented him with a prescription. Osita was detained in Festac Police Area Command for two (2) days, then transferred to Panti from where he was taken to a Magistrate Court and charged

2) If the liability of the two pharmacists is limited to the sales or alleged sales of rohypnol to clients they do not know and never collaborated with in this condemnable crime then it is logical to believe that at best there might have been breaches of professional ethics. The law provides that such matters are dealt with by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria a regulatory agency of the Federal Government established by Cap. P.17 LFN 2004.

3) The drug in question Rohypnol is an intermediate acting benzodiazepam similar to diazepam (valium), nitrazepam (swidon) and bromazepam (lexotan).

Rohypnol is the brand name of the medicine flunitrazepam and is one of the benzodiazepine class of sedatives or tranquilizer drugs, of which valium or diazepam is perhaps the best known. It is used in the management of anxiety and sleep disorders (short term treatment of insomnia).

Rohypnol is made by Roche in Switzerland, registered with NAFDAC (Reg. No: 04 ? 0150) and distributed in Nigeria by Swipha Nigeria Ltd. It is not a rare drug as being reported. It is available in Nigeria.

4) The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) counsels Nigerians to monitor the use of internet facilities by youths and children particularly because of volume and nature of information available.

5) We urge the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution in the Ministry of Justice in Lagos State to immediately review the cases of these pharmacists with a view to advising the relevant authorities on how best to tackle this matter and to ensure that the innocent is not persecuted albeit unjustly.

CONCLUSION
Gentlemen of the Press, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) assures Nigerians that it will continue to work with stakeholders including relevant regulatory agencies to evolve a National Strategy that will improve the use of medicines in Nigeria. In line with this, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has dedicated September 25, 2012 to continue the dialogue on safe medicines by collaborating with the National Human Rights Commission, Regulatory Agencies, Media and other stakeholders.

One of the salient lessons inherent in the discourse is that our youth while trusting must verify the relationship they make through the social media given the abuse potential.

Once again, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the entire Osokogu family. We pray that God will grant the family the fortitude to bear this loss.

Thank you.

New facts emerge on how Facebook friends strangled ex-Major General’s only daughter to death

Cynthia Osokogu, the only daughter of Major General Frank Osokogu (retd), who reportedly went missing on July 22, 2012, newsmen gathered, was strangled by students in a hotel in FESTAC, Lagos. Miss Cynthia, who was a postgraduate student in Nasarawa, went to Lagos to purchase "cheap" goods for her boutique , not knowing that she was dealing with a deadly syndicate.

A senior police officer, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the case, said the deceased was drugged, bound hand and foot and then strangled by her assailants. The source said, “According to the confession obtained from two of the suspects, they met the deceased on the internet and lured her to Lagos to purchase goods at a cheaper rate.

“On getting to the airport in Lagos, the suspects took her to a hotel, drugged her, and bound her by hand and foot. They confessed to inflicting pains on her and strangling her before stealing her money, phone and identity card. “The suspects confessed that their modus operandi is to lure young females to Lagos for such purpose. They said they had done it before.”

The police officer said when Cynthia's corpse was discovered by employees of the hotel, the matter was reported to the police but because her phones and identity card had been stolen, there was no way the police could ascertain her identity so her corpse was moved to Isolo General Hospital. There are indications that an employee of the unnamed hotel was complicit and had been arrested.

Also, the pharmacist who gave the rare drug which was used to paralyse the deceased, had been arrested. He is suspected to be a member of the syndicate. The source said the police embarked on an undercover operation which led them to Ogun State to arrest one of the suspects. “The last suspect was arrested at about 3am on Tuesday and we have almost completed investigations.

However, only two of the suspects have confessed,” the source said. When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said “the Commissioner of Police for the state Police command, Mr. Umar Manko, will hold a press briefing on Wednesday (today) on the issue. The girl was killed but all details will be disclosed during the briefing.”

wicked! Woman beats foster son to death for stealing N50

Tragedy struck at 8, Amosu Street, Ijegun, Lagos, on Sunday as a woman identified simply as Iya Anu, allegedly beat her foster son, Seubow, to death for allegedly stealing N50.

It was learnt that Iya Anu, a mother of four, usually inflicted injuries on Seubow, her husband’s nephew and her children whenever they erred.

Trouble started when 16-year-old Seubow misplaced a N1, 000 note given to him for an errand on Saturday.

The development, it was learnt, irked Iya Anu who starved the teenager throughout Saturday. When Seubow could no longer bear the hunger, he sneaked out of the house at night to buy Gala.

When Iya Anu knew about it, our correspondent learnt that she became furious, accused him of stealing her N50 and gave the teenager the beating of his life.

A neighbour who identified herself simply as Balikis said the accused must have used a hot object to batter the boy as his body was full of burns.

She said, “Iya Anu began to beat him on Saturday night. The beating continued till about 9am on Sunday when her husband and the other children had left for church.

“She battered him till he gave up the ghost about noon.  When she realised that the boy had lost consciousness, she cried for help but it was already late.  At a point, she wanted to run away but she was promptly rounded up.”

Another resident, Modinatu, said Iya Anu, had in June battered the boy resulting in her being invited to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division for questioning.

She said, “Seubow joined them in December 2011 and this woman has made life so unbearable for him just the way she does to her children too. In June, the boy was battered to the extent that she was quizzed by the police.

“Also, she has in the name of discipline used a knife to injure her first daughter, Anu, on her shoulders over issues bordering on misdemeanour.

“She is so violent that she even fights neighbours with objects at the slightest provocation. She was sent packing from her former place of residence on Jimoh Aigbe Street, which is just some few streets away from here when she injured her landlady with a knife.”

Corroborating Modinatu’s claims, Alexander Akinnurun, the Proprietor of Alex Group of Schools, Ijegun, the school Seubow attended before his death, described her as a troublemaker.

He said, “She has been perpetrating those acts for quite some time now and reports of her heinous deeds abound. In June, Seubow who happened to be one of my pupils came to school with a disfigured face and wounds on his body.

“I was so moved by this that I reported the incident to the police. I don’t know how far the police went with the matter but I never expected that such an ugly incident would still repeat itself.”

When our correspondent visited the area on Monday, it was learnt that she had been arrested by the police.

It was also learnt Iya Anu was a serial divorcee and is at present with her third husband.

When contacted on the phone, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, said she could not reach the Divisional Police Officer of Isheri Oshun.

Tragedy struck at 8, Amosu Street, Ijegun, Lagos, on Sunday as a woman identified simply as Iya Anu, allegedly beat her foster son, Seubow, to d*ath for allegedly stealing N50. It was learnt that Iya Anu, a mother of four, usually inflicted injuries on Seubow, her husband’s nephew and her children whenever they erred.

Soldiers Beat 61 Years Old Motorist To Death For Driving With Broken Mirror

Soldiers attached to the Flag House, Force Road, Lagos, have been accused of k*lling a 61-year-old man, Adewale Olupitan-Hazzan. It was learnt that the soldiers who were driving in a military convoy on Ikorodu Road on July 15 went on the rampage and brutalised Adewale, a road user, for allegedly breaking the side mirror of one of the vehicles in their convoy.

It was gathered that Adewale was bundled out of his Toyota Camry and thoroughly beaten by the soldiers at the Obanikoro end of Ikorodu Road. Adewale’s younger brother, Adedotun, said his brother even up till the time of his death, insisted that he did not do anything wrong to warrant such brutality.

He said, “He said when he heard the sound of the siren, he slowed down and adjusted to pave the way for them but was taken aback when the last car in the convoy, a Peugeot 407, marked NA 01AO, parked beside him. “He said before he knew it, the soldiers bundled him out of his car beat him up and hit him repeatedly with the butts of their guns.” Adedotun said a military officer identified simply as Capt. Peter, who was just passing by was moved by his predicament and urged the rampaging soldiers to release him.

Adedotun said, “But unfortunately Peter’s intervention could not secure his release, they insisted that he must follow them to their base to see one of their superiors. They also took his car with them. “However, Peter followed them to the Flag Staff House and eventually secured his release on the condition that he replaced the side mirror.” Adedotun said though Adewale, who retired as an assistant director, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency in 2006, did not break the side mirror of the vehicle, he replaced it to allow peace to reign and later got his car released on July 16.

He said when his brother got home, he complained about nagging headache and later had a swollen head. He said, “He received treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, before he was moved to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and later referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. “A brain surgery was carried out on him on July 29 after X-ray examinations revealed that he had a head trauma. He died some few hours after the operation.”

A death certificate issued by LUTH dated July 29, indicated Adewale suffered from subdural hematoma following a head trauma. The certificate signed by Dr. Alagbe, stated the primary cause of Adewale’s death was “Subacute Subdural Hematoma,” the secondary cause was “Cardiopulmonary failure.” It added that “the disease had continued till his death.” A doctor, who craved anonymity, said the death certificate showed that there was “bleeding into the space between the dura (covering of the brain) and the brain itself.”

The deceased first son, Omololu, whose wedding ceremony billed for October 20 has been suspended, said his father could not have argued with the soldiers because he had always warned them not to argue with armed men. He said, “The brutality meted out to my father which eventually led to his death was unwarranted. I wonder why they threw caution to the wind and pounced on an unarmed civilian in such a manner. “He always says ‘try and avoid them, because they are troublesome and dangerous. They can go to any length to get what they want. Whenever they stop you, give to them whatever they demand for.”

The deceased’s elder brother, Ademola, said Adewale was an easy-going man. He said, “He was a pillar of support for many members of the family. It’s very unfortunate that his life was cut short abruptly in such a wicked manner. He was not a trouble maker.” Adewale’s wife, Adedoyinsola, who spoke with our correspondent, said the soldiers had taken away her joy. She said, “My husband’s death is a big blow. He toiled day and night and now that he should be eating the fruits of his long years of labour, the soldiers took away his life for no just cause.

“This is an irreparable loss. The Nigerian Army authorities must not cover up the perpetrators of this wicked act. They should be fished out and they should allow justice to prevail.” However, the deceased’s driver, Aduragbemi Soneye, said he could identify the soldier who led the attack. He said, “My boss, myself and two of the soldiers that led the onslaught against him (Adewale) went to replace the mirror of the vehicle on July 16. My boss pointed the ring leader to me. I can identify him and one other if they are brought before me.”

In a petition written by Adedotun on behalf of the family and addressed to the Special Investigation Bureau of the Nigerian Army, Arakan Barracks, Apapa, Lagos, the family demanded that the army authorities should investigate the incident. The petition dated August 2 and titled, ‘Death of Adewale Olupitan-Hazzan’ reads in part, “From the result of the X-ray examinations and death certificate as well as the chain of events, it is obvious that the deceased who had no history of a terminal ailment died from the beating of the soldiers.

“In this circumstance, we, the family members of the deceased, are crying out for justice. We demand that the matter be thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to book.” When contacted on the phone, the spokesperson for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Kayode Ogunsanya, said he was not aware of the incident. “I am not aware of it. I would have to contact the Special Investigation Bureau of the Nigerian Army to get the details of the incident,” he said.
