Plane From Abuja Crash-lands In Ilorin - Report

 An Overland plane carrying 59 passengers and 4 crew members crash landed this evening Saturday November 29th in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

 The plane, coming from Abuja, was said to have overshot the runway after it landed.

 Below is a statement from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, about the incident

"An Overland flight 1186, an ATR 72 aircraft with Registration number 5N-BPG from Abuja airport to Ilorin, carrying fifty nine passengers and four crew members,veered off the runway at low speed after a normal landing at the Ilorin Airport.

 The incident which occurred today Saturday, November 29, at 4.45pm, has no casualty recorded. However, the Accident and Prevention Bureau in conjunction with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has begun an investigation into the cause of the incident. The authority wishes to use this medium to reassure Nigerians that safety of the traveling public is still paramount and cannot be compromised.” the statement read...

Family Struggle To Recover Body Of Nigerian Who Died In Algerian Plane Crash

 Family members of the only Nigerian who died in the ill fated Air Algeria AH5017 plane crash that killed 110 passengers and crew on July 24th in Mali say they are struggling to retrieve his body from the Malian government. 

The family is now pleading with the Federal Government to help them retrieve his body so they could give him a proper burial.

Late Emmanuel Osita, a professional footballer with a club in Burkina Faso, was on his way to Dubai to sign a new football contract when he met his untimely death.

Speaking with Channels TV, Emmanuel's father Ogbu Osita said his son had called him few minutes before boarding the flight and asked that he prayed for him which he did.

"He entered the plane by 10.30pm Nigerian time and 10 o'clock in Burkina faso. He asked me to pray for him for success and journey mercy, I prayed for him and after I prayed for him, he boarded the plane and I urged him that as soon as he gets to Dubai, he should call us to know that he has reached. The President of the club he played for in Burkina Faso called me to tell me that the plane Osita Emmanuel entered had been declared missing. From that moment, we know that Osita Emmanuel, my son, is dead." he said.

The father revealed that the family has written to the Federal Ministry of Foreign affairs to help retrieve the body of their late bread winner for burial but no word has come from the Ministry. He said they are financially incapacitated if not they would have done so themselves.

"If they help us to bring the dead body to Nigeria, then we can go and bury him because as I told you before, we are financially incapacitated to do so" his father said

Meanwhile the Director Consular of the Foreign Affairs Minister, Abdul-Aziz Dankano, said the Federal Government is waiting for the conclusion of the investigation being carried out by the Malian government into the crash, adding that bodies of the crash victims have not yet been released.

He said they would get in touch with the family of late Osita to know what the government can do for them. Source

Sad : Over 50 Dead As TransAsia Airways Crash Lands

 Over 50 people have been confirmed dead after a TransAsia Airways passenger plane crashed on one of Taiwan's Penghu islands today Wednesday July 23rd. 

According to Taiwan's Central News Agency, at least 9 other people were seriously injured in the crash of the twin-engine turboprop plane, which happened outside Magong airport at about 7 p.m local time.

The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known but the region has been dealing with powerful typhoon.

50 people die in Russian plane crash today Including Son of Tartarstan President

A Boeing 737 crash landed at Kazan airport in central Russia killing all 50 people on board.

The son of the president of the province of Tatarstan and the regional head of the FSB intelligence service were named among those who had died after the passenger jet exploded in a ball of fire when it hit the runway.

The plane took off from Moscow’s Domodedovo airport just before half past six in the evening local time and crashed over an hour later.

Pictures taken at the scene showed charred wreckage spread over a wide area. Forty-four passengers and six crew were on board.

The plane was 33 years old. According to the International Air Transport Association Russia and the former Soviet Republics combined have one of world’s worst air-traffic safety records.

We Nigerians sympathise with the families of the deceased but we are shocked countries we look up for avaition success to can still endanger the lives of their citizens with old planes. Isn't 33 yrs too old for a plane to be flying??

'I Saw A Man Walk Out With His Legs' - Witnesses Reveal Shocking Details Of Plane Crash

 An airport taxi driver, identified as Mathew Babatunde who witnessed the plane crash narrated how it happened:

“I was just passing the toll gate with passengers in my car when I saw the aircraft coming down. I even thought the plane will crash on my car the way it was bent.

 My passengers immediately shouted at me that I should swerve the car. Immediately, I swerved my car then I saw that the plane was struggling to go back up.

It eventually hit a Mango tree behind Saraha Tank Farm. Immediately the plane hit the tree, it divided into two and caught fire.

"I saw one man walked out with his leg, he was supported by two other people. It took about 20 minutes before ambulance came and another forty minutes before fire service people arrived the scene.

 The shocked Mathew Babatunde continued “I am not working again today, I want to go and park my car now. I am no longer interested.”

Another witness, Mrs. Chidinma Nwoke who spoke while crying, said she was among the first people who got the scene of the crash.

 She said, “we tried to help the victims but the soldiers and airport officials refused.

 They said it is dangerous and that we were not wearing safety boots.

“It is horrible. I saw a woman who tried to jump out but she got hooked on the fence and she died there.

 The fire outbreak consumed most of them, including one man who was almost out.

 That man would have been alive if the fire services were on ground early enough. He was almost out of the aircraft but fire caught his trousers and that was how he got burnt”.

“I saw a man who wore a white trouser walked with his legs from the crash. He had only a slight injury on the head and was taken to the clinic near the toll gate”

Death toll from the Lagos plane that crashed on Thursday morning has risen to thirteen  official said.The  charter plane was  said to have 20 people on board when it suffered engine failure shortly after takeoff from Lagos on Thursday, crash-landing near an airport fuel depot and killing at least 13, an official told AFP.

“There were 20 people on board, 13 passengers and 7 crew,” said Joe Obi, spokesman for Nigeria’s Aviation Ministry. “Thirteen people (on board) have been confirmed dead, six injured, while one person is still unaccounted for,” he added.

An official from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency told Reuters the cause of the crash was engine failure

The front of the aircraft was completely destroyed, indicating it was the first part to hit the ground. The wrecked remains, surrounded by security officers and rescue workers, lay about 30 yards from massive tanks storing aviation fuel.

Local news reports said the plane was carrying mourners and the body of Olusegun Agagu, the former Ondo state Governor, who died on Sept 13.

Dati said Agagu's casket and the black box that records data from the aircraft had been recovered. He said the plane was a Brazilian-made turboprop Embraer-120.

Breaking News:At least 5 dead in Lagos plane crash

At least eight people died when a plane suffered an engine failure Thursday shortly after takeoff in Lagos, crash-landing on the runway before catching fire, officials told AFP.

"It was an Associated Airline plane. It was going to Akure (southwest). The engine failed on takeoff and it crash-landed and burst into flames. Twenty people were on board," said Supo Atobatele, spokesman for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

The Federal Ministry of Aviation has just issued a statement saying the Taraba State Governor, Danbaba Suntai, and the other five passengers aboard the crashed plane are alive.

The statement titled “Incident Involving Aircraft, Cessna 208, 5N-BMJ in Yola, Adamawa State, reads:

 “An aircraft, Cessna 208 with 6 souls on board including crew, operated by the Taraba State Government departed Jalingo, Taraba State for Yola this evening and reported contact with the Yola Control Tower (1720Z) and field in sight at 38 miles estimating landing at 1730Z. The pilot subsequently lost contact with Yola Control Tower and subsequent effort to raise the aircraft failed.”


“Search & Rescue was immediately activated and site of incident located with all victims alive with various degrees of injuries. The victims have been evacuated to the hospital for treatment pending further investigation of the incident.”

“This is the correct version of the incident; every other one that is contrary to this is incorrect.”

Taraba governor survives another plane crash

The Taraba State Governor, Danbaba Suntai, escaped death on Thursday after a plane he was flying crashed in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

The governor, his aide-de-camp and chief security officer, who were also in the plane that took off from Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, and three others, were seriously injured.

Mr Suntai, who graduated as a pilot from the Aviation College in Zaria last year, was piloting the crashed plane. This would be the second time he is surviving a plane crash.

The plane, a Cessna 208, 5N-BMJ, owned by the state government, crashed at about 7.45 pm, near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) depot, on the outskirts of Yola.

The governor, who was brought in unconscious, was first taken to Yola Specialist Hospital for treatment, but was later, moved to the better-equipped Federal Medical Centre, Yola.

A statement from the Ministry of Aviation said the aircraft had six persons, including the crew on board when it crashed.

It said the aircraft departed Jalingo for Yola and reported contact with the Yola control tower, but shortly before it landed, the pilot lost contact with the control tower, while efforts to radio the aircraft failed.

“A search and rescue was immediately activated and the site of incident located with all victims alive with various degrees of injuries. The victims have been evacuated to the hospital for treatment pending further investigation of the incident,” the statement, signed by the media aide to the Minister of Aviation, Joe Obi, said.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metu, said it was shocked by the news of the accident.

“We received the news of the plane crash with shock. We are officially awaiting the news of the true position right now and we urge all our members in Taraba and Nigerians to pray for him,” it said.

With Mr Suntai’s incapacitation, his deputy, Garba Umar, who was sworn in on October 5, following the impeachment of Sani Abubakar, is expected to take charge in the state.

The Taraba State Commissioner for Information, Emmanuel Bello, who confirmed to Channels Television that the governor survived the plane crash, said he is now receiving medical attention.

Mr Bello, who spoke to Channels Television, said: “we have a situation in our hands but to the glory of God, the governor is alive and he is already been given the attention he needs right now.”

“For now he is on bed and alive to the glory of God,” he added.

The Commissioner however refused to confirm whether the governor was the one that flew the crashed plane.

“We are getting all sorts of information but we are working to get the situation under control and there is no reason to panic” he affirmed.

The Commissioner for Information in Taraba State, Mr Emmanuel Bello has confirmed to Channels Television that the governor of the state, survived the plane crash and he is now on bed and receiving medical attention.

Mr Bello in a live phone-in on our flagship News At Ten stated that “we have a situation on our hands but to the glory of God, the Governor is alive and he is already been given the attention he needs right now.”

“For now he is on bed and alive to the glory of God” he added.

The Commissioner however refused to confirm whether the governor was the one that flew the crashed plane.

“We are getting all sorts of information but we are working to get the situation under control and there is no reason to panic” he affirmed.

Meanwhile a statement released by officials of the state government confirmed the presence of the governor on the plane that crashed in Yola , but the statement also confirmed that the governor was not dead.

Mr Suntai was reportedly flying the private jet that had five other passengers and all of them were injured, but none of them died, the statement said.

The governor is said to be currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Yola.

Atta Mills visits Ghana plane crash victims

Grieving family members gathered at a morgue in Ghana’s capital Accra on Sunday after a cargo plane overshot an airport runway and crashed into a passenger bus, killing at least 10 people.The four crew members from the Boeing 727 Allied Air cargo plane survived Saturday night’s accident, and Ghanaian President John Atta Mills visited at least two of them at the clinic where they were being treated.

The two men were in hospital beds as the president arrived, one with visible bruises on his arm and face.

“I pray that all of you have survived and wish you speedy recovery,” Mills said, but did not speak directly to reporters.

At a military hospital morgue where the bodies of victims had been taken, family members gathered to identify remains and spoke of their grief.

“My life has been destroyed,” a teary-eyed Zenab Ayesha, the wife of one of the victims, told AFP. “He was my husband, and the breadwinner of the family is gone.”

She said she heard from a friend that her husband was among the dead.

“I was waiting for him to come back from work and he did not show up,” Ayesha said.

Fred Aneba, who was at the morgue to identify his 27-year-old brother, called his death “a disaster for my family.”

“How will I communicate the death of my brother to our 80-year-old mother? I have lost my only brother,” he said.

The government meanwhile ordered the creation of a committee to investigate the crash, which saw the cargo plane barrel into a minibus in an area near the airport in the capital.

The flight operated by Allied Air, a Nigerian-based firm, had left the Nigerian economic capital Lagos before attempting to land in Accra.

The crash left the minibus destroyed and the plane badly damaged, though its body remained largely intact, allowing the crew members to escape.

Ghanaian police on Sunday sought to control hundreds of residents converging on the site of the crash to gape at the badly damaged bus as well as the plane’s wing and tail, which had broken off from the body.

Sirens blared as the police tried to contain the chaos.

“I have never seen anything like this in my life before,” John Asiedu, one of the onlookers, told AFP.

Ghana’s Vice President John Dramani Mahama told reporters at the airport in the hours after the crash that a thorough investigation would be carried out.

“No early conclusions should be drawn,” he said before heading toward the scene of the accident.

“We should allow investigations to arrive at the actual cause of the accident. But I can assure Ghanaians that the situation is under control.”

A person who answered at a number listed for Allied Air in the Nigerian oil hub of Port Harcourt identified the company as Nigerian-owned but said only officials at the Lagos office could comment on the crash.

Repeated calls to the company’s other listed numbers have gone unanswered.

Tunji Oketunbi of Nigeria’s Accident Investigations Bureau described Allied Air as a small Nigerian cargo airline but declined to comment on the crash.

Ghana’s airport operator, Ghana Airports Company Limited, said operations had returned to normal after the crash and that flights were continuing as scheduled.

Kofi Kportufe, head of Ghana’s national disaster management agency, applauded the response of the emergency services.

“We are grateful for the military (and) fire service for the quick response which averted further disaster,” he said. “We want to assure Ghanaians and the entire world that everything is under control. There’s no cause for alarm.”

Ghana, a west African nation of some 24 million people, is not known to have had any recent plane crashes.
