MALAM Rapes Three Kids, Lures Them With Sweets and Biscuits

A 45-year old Hausa petty trader, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman, has been sent to Kirikiri Prison for allegedly having carnal knowledge of three minors inside his shop at Shasha area of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria. Two of the children aged 7 and 5 are from the same parents, while the last one is three years old. It was gathered that Suleiman allegedly enticed the kids into a kiosk with biscuits and sweets and then defiled them.

Suleiman’s act was exposed when curious neighbours suspected there was strange movement of kids inside his kiosk. They moved in and discovered he was defiling the children. As the children confessed that Suleiman defiled them, the neighbours raised the alarm, leading to his arrest. The incident occurred at 7, Ifelodun Street, Shasha, while the case was reported at Idimu Police Command, Area ‘M’.

The suspect was arrested by the police but was later released as the culprit was said to be close to some powerful Hausa Serikis in the area. It was after a Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, Africa for Human Rights, AFRIRIGHTS, led by Comrade Afolabi Gbajumo intervened in the matter that the Area Commander ordered the re-arrest of Suleiman last Friday. The NGO stormed the Area ‘M’ Police Division on Monday to spur the police to arraign the culprit in court.

Suleiman was taken to Ejigbo magistrate’s court for prosecution. At the magistrate’s court, Ejigbo, the matter was referred to the Family Court 6, Ikeja, as the matter was classified as defilement and could not be entertained at the magistrate’s court. At the Family Court, Ikeja, Suleiman was slammed with a two-count charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of two children, aged 5 and 7.

Having pleaded not guilty, the presiding judge ordered that the accused be remanded at the Kirikiri Prison and brought to court on 18 June, 2012. However, the case of the third child aged three, allegedly defiled by Suleiman, was not brought to court yesterday. According to Gbajumo, her case would be filed today as the test conducted on her had just been released.

Meanwhile, the test conducted on the other two victims by the Orile-Agege General Hospital showed that the hymen of the victims had been broken, showing that they were actually defiled.

Photo: Latest rape prevention technique.

It is really a marvel that someone would think like this. A pant to prevent rape? Even though it sounds funny but logically it has been debated well, looking at the fact that of a truth any man with such sudden sight of HIV declaration would think twice before attempting to go on with such in-human act, except of course if the person is already an HIV positive individual. Would you agree this method could really wade off rapists?

The revelation was made by Mr. Paul Odimba, PRO of the Bauchi State Command of NSCDC while parading the five rapists whose names were given as Muhammad Danboloko, Abubakar Jaro, Danjuma Chindo, Muhammad Garba and Bala Ibrahim.

According to Mr. Odimba, the girls were pupils of a UBE primary school in Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state. He said the rapists were arrested following a tip-off by the Parents/Teachers Association of the school.

Lawyers seek maximum sentence for rapists

Some lawyers in Lagos on Friday urged the judiciary to apply maximum sentence against rapists to serve as deterrent to others. In separate interviews the lawyers also urged government to equip the investigating agencies to enable them thoroughly prosecute offenders. Mr Spurgeon Ataene, a lawyer, noted that proper implementation of the law would prevent offenders from getting a slap on the wrist for such a grave offence.

“There should be a political will on the part of government to ensure the implementation of all the laws relating to rape,’’ he said. Ataene noted that the evidential burden placed on victims made it difficult for them to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion. Another lawyer, Mrs Angela Onyeagwu, blamed government for not putting enough machinery in place to ensure proper investigation of rape cases.

“If the different state of the federation put enough machinery in place to be able to ensure equal and very competent investigation into any of the rape cases then of course the culprits would not go free. “But what we see in court is that they rush the cases to court without finding out the details, the condition and precedent,’’ she said.

Onyeagwu noted that many of the prosecutors lacked expertise in handling sensitive matters such as rape. “Most of the time the police come to court with charges of indecent assault, very few come direct as rape. “It is difficult to convict a suspect for rape because there are guidelines and conditions that must be met before you can establish rape. “So it is very difficult to establish and prove beyond reasonable doubt that a person had committed rape,’’ she said.

She, however, urged government to provide materials that would aid the investigation of rape cases as obtained in developed countries. In his contribution, Mr Kingsley Obikwe, said the increase of rape cases was as a result of parents’ neglect of their roles to their children.

Obikwe noted that many parents were so busy with their material pursuits thereby abandoning their duties of impacting morality in their children. “Parents should show more interest in the affairs of their children, know the company they keep, educate the girl-child on dangers of rape so that they are not caught up in the menace.

Police Arrested Four Suspected Members of The Robbery Gang That Attacked and Rape Student

The Ogun State Police Command, yesterday, said it had arrested four suspected members of the robbery gang that attacked Ekene Dili Chukwu luxury bus which was conveying 42 female secondary school students to Lagos, last Saturday, at the Oke-Odo end of Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ijebu-East Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest was made just as indication emerged, yesterday, that the attack and reported rape on the teenage students could have been averted had the driver of the bus listened to warnings by motorists that robbers were operating ahead. Consequently, the 52-year-old luxury bus driver, (names withheld) has been arrested and detained by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Elewe-Eran, Abeokuta.

Sources at the state CID told Vanguard that the driver would remain with them until he cleared the air on the matter. Driver ignored warning It was gathered that the gunmen barricaded the highway last Saturday night where they attacked motorists who slowed down on reaching the spot. Some motorists reportedly suspected danger when they saw a road block ahead and stopped before the barricaded spot as they wondered why there was a road block in spite of its ban.

Most of them reportedly remained on the spot, watching the turn out of event when it was apparent that robbers were operating ahead. Motorists flagged the driver down, informing him of an impending danger ahead. But the driver reportedly ignored them. Police sources said: “The driver is not new to robbers’ modus operandi and should have stopped to find out what the problem was.” Suspects nabbed Confirming the arrest, spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, Mr Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said:

“The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the driver of the luxury bus that conveyed the Enugu students who were attacked by some hoodlums at Ogbere along the ever busy Ijebu/Benin expressway at 11. 40p.m. on Saturday, 31/3/2012 and four others who have been suspected to have carried out the operation. “The other suspects arrested are Oni Olopari, Innocent Omule, Gbenga Adebayo and Samuel Luca. Driver of the bus has identified Samuel Luca as one of those who attacked them that night.

“In the same vein, the command was able to recover some items in the suspects’ houses at Ijebu Ife and Ijebu Imushin, including some plastic chairs contained in a broken down vehicle at the scene of the robbery, the recovery of these chairs assisted the police to focus more on the suspects who were raided in their hideout at Ijebu Imushin after a tip off.

The command is still intensifying efforts to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.” During investigation, one of the suspects, Lucas, was discovered to have been residing in a military barracks in Ilese area of the the state before he was ejected for an undisclosed offence. Transport firm blames parents Meanwhile, the management of Ekene Dili Chukwu Transport Company Limited, in its official reaction three days after the incident said although the attack by armed robbers was regrettable, it, however, blamed the attack on some parents of the students.

The company’s General Manager, Mr. Charles Obiora, in an interview with Vanguard said the second bus sent to convey the stranded students travelled in the night because some parents insisted that their children must be brought to Lagos that night by all means. He stated that the company had a record of cordial relationship with the school and Parents Teachers Association, adding that the company has a standing policy not to travel at night following the spate of insecurity in the country. …dismisses rape case The company also dismissed as baseless and unfounded rumours that some students were gang-raped by the hoodlums who hijacked the bus, challenging any parents to show evidence of such from a government certified medical report.

According to Obiora, “the incident is highly regrettable, I must say but again, it will be suicidal for any transport company to send his driver on a long journey with a dysfunctional vehicle, especially that conveying students. “On that day when we got the report that the bus conveying them to Lagos had developed fault, we promptly dispatched another one in good shape to fetch the stranded students but when we discovered that it was getting late into the night, we got through to the driver to drive them to a safe spot but some parents who were at our Fadeyi park insisted that they would not leave until they set their eyes on their wards.

“This was why the driver continued the journey to Lagos even against our policy. I want to say that the company maintains a 17-year robust relationship with the school and the PTA. Instead of engaging in a media war, parents should help the victims overcome the psychological trauma their wards have suffered from. “It is true that the bus ran into a gang of armed robbers, but about 17 of the students had disembarked on the order of the hoodlums while they were being searched and robbed of their valuables but at the sight of a patrol van that was on routine patrol of the road, one of the robbers jumped into the bus and zoomed off into the bush not too far from the scene of incident.

“The vehicle and the remaining 25 students on board were later recovered where they were abandoned. I can tell you that nobody was raped and I challenge any parent who said his or her daughter was raped to come up with a medical report from a government hospital to that effect.” Ig orders police motorized patrols on highways Meantime, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered motorised police patrol of the nation’s highways to check incidences of banditry.

He said his decision to dismantle road blocks, which gave rise to incidences of toll collection, harassment of citizens on highways and other gory tales earlier associated with Police road blocks, was part of measures to reposition the police force. However, based on fears expressed by some sections of the populace, the IG said: “All commands shall, with immediate effect, commence robust motorized patrols of federal highways within their jurisdictions to ensure safety and easy passage of road users.

Nigerians travelling on our highways must have confidence of their safety with visible Police patrols.” He said the command’s efforts would be complemented by a sophisticated Rapid Response Structure, which would be set up soon, to ensure that all federal highways were kept safe from armed robbery attacks, both during the day and at night. The IG observed that Boko Haram attacks on Police personnel and other security agencies had reduced following measures put in place by Command CPs in the North East to reduce the level of casualty among, not only security personnel, but also Nigerians.

Abubakar, who spoke while at a conference he summoned for DIGs and Command CPs, also noted that the police force was going scientific in its bid to address the daunting challenges posed by criminals and criminality, especially now that criminals in all sectors were resorting to the use of ICT and other technologies to beat detection and arrest. His words: “In the past few weeks, we have taken steps to reposition the force and provide a new direction for Police administration and operations.

“We believe that the steps we have taken so far are germane and will lay a strong foundation for a cohesive reform initiative which we hope will transform the Nigeria Police Force. “This is exemplified in the enforcement of the directives I issued upon my assumption of office for the dismantling of road blocks, fight against corruption, decongestion of cells and other initiatives we introduced.

“Today, stories of toll collection, harassment of citizens on highways and other gory tales earlier associated with the police road blocks, no longer confront us. The road blocks have disappeared and I intend the situation to remain so. “Although, the Nigerian public is apprehensive about the general loneliness of our highways with fears expressed about the possibility of armed robbers taking them over, I believe we shall keep our highways safe from armed robbers without restoring the old police road blocks.”

As reported by Vanguard, yesterday, shortly before the meeting commenced, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Administration, Mr Suleiman Fakai, asked one of the newly promoted Assistant Inspector General of Police, Philemon Leha, to step out as no AIG was expected to be present at the deliberation. Lagos lawmakers advocate return of police check-point nationwide In a related development, some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, LAHA, yesterday called for the return of police check-points on major highways nationwide.

The lawmakers said the move was necessary to prevent the heinous activities of armed robbers currently on the prowl on the highways. Mr Segun Olulade, a lawmaker from Epe II, said that the dismantling of police check-points had led to the return of more criminals. Olulade, Chairman, Committee on Information, Security and Strategy of the state assembly, said that the presence of policemen at check-points in the past had created a sort of sanity compared to the current situation after the removal.

The assemblyman said that the IG should have put an alternative measure in place before dismantling the check-points, especially in the face of current security challenges in Nigeria. He suggested the installation of security equipment and gadgets like the CCTV nationwide for easy identification of perpetrators of crimes. Also commenting on the alleged rape, another lawmaker, Mr Yusuf Ayinla, (ACN Mushin II), described it as pathetic and called on the police to track down the perpetrators.

Ayinla said that it was inhuman for anyone to rob and rape some children regarded as future leaders. On calls for the return of police check-points, the lawmaker said he was in support of advocates of the return of the police to the highway. ‘’I am in total support that the security check-points should be back in place until the Federal Government were able to put in a proper security communications gadgets network like in overseas.”

Ayinla, however, said that the police should be returned to the highways with some modifications that would allow for the comfort of motorists. In his contribution, Mr Ahmed Omisore, ACN Ifako-Ijaiye II, said the return of the police to the highways would curb incessant highway crime. Omisore said that the absence of security personnel on the road posed more threat to motorists. “Motorists are no longer safe driving from one place to another; some are harassed by hoodlums while some are robbed and raped along the highway”, he said

"Gunmen Raped My Friends; I Was Saved By Menstrual Period"

When we were dragged into the bush, we were ordered to lie down. The robbers would immediately point the flash light at you and say ‘spread your legs open.’

“The robbers defiled some of the girls but when it got to my turn and I opened my legs, they saw blood between my thighs and this was because I was on my menstrual cycle. “The robbers thought I had been raped already, left me and continued raping the other girls.”

One of the 42 female students of Holy Rosary College, Enugu, who were attacked by armed robbers in a Lagos-bound luxury bus on Sagamu-Benin Expressway said, while explaining their ordeal in the hands of the dare-devil robbers to a Punch Correspondent.

The girl, who spoke on condition of anonymity at her parents’ residence in Ajao Estate, Lagos, disclosed that that the robbers raped most of the girls because they did not find valuables on them. The traumatised girl, who spoke in a voice laden with emotion, said the robbers, who were many, dragged all the girls into the bush and began raping them one after the other.

She added that robbers were pointing the flashlight directly into the girls’ eyes so that they would not be able to see their faces. Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said patrols were being intensified in the area where the incident took place to checkmate such activities.

Robbers attack luxury bus, rape schoolgirls

A luxury bus conveying secondary school girls from Enugu to Lagos State was attacked by armed robbers at the Okeodo end of Ore-Sagamu Expressway, Ogun State on Saturday around 11:40pm.. The students numbering 42 were of Holy Cross College, Enugu and had hired the bus belonging to Ekene Dili Chukwu Group of Companies with registration number Lagos XW 875 LSR, for their travel to Lagos.

The assailants dragged the students into a nearby bush and beat them before robbing them of their belongings. Unconfirmed reports however said a few of them were raped. PUNCH Metro gathered that the students had departed for Lagos early in the afternoon on Saturday but were held up in traffic and had to continue the journey into the night. The report said the bus developed some faults along the way and had to park at Oke-Odo.

It was while the occupants of the bus were waiting for another bus from Lagos that the robbers struck, it added. It was learnt that families of the victims, who were already at the Lagos office of Ekene Dili Chukwu, to pick up their children were anxious when they learnt that the bus developed fault. Our correspondent was told that news of the robbery caused a mild protest as they panicked. Calm however returned to the terminal on Sunday morning after the distraught girls arrived in Lagos. Meanwhile, parents and relatives of the victims have threatened a show-down with the transport company.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the attack, told our correspondent that policemen had rescued victims and recovered the vehicle. He said, “Around 7:30am on Sunday, one Friday Odi, a driver working with Ekene Dili Chukwu, Nig. Ltd, who drove the vehicle with registration number, Lagos XW 875 LSR, reported that at 11:40pm, on Saturday, while conveying 42 female students of Holy Cross Rosary College, Enugu to

Lagos, armed men in Oke Odo area, along Ore-Sagamu Expressway stopped their vehicle. “The hoodlums drove them to a point in the bush where they were robbed. Policemen traced the hijacked bus, rescued and evacuated the students to their Lagos destination. They towed the vehicle to the station and released it to the owner on bond. Nobody was injured.” PUNCH Metro learnt that the matter was also reported at Sabo Police Division, Lagos.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, however told our correspondent that the case would be handled by the Ogun Police Command under whose jurisdiction the crime took place. A member of the National Union of road Transport Workers, attached to the Jibowu terminal, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the relatives of the victims picketed the Lagos office of the transport company on the grounds that some of the victims were raped.

“Some of the parents claimed that their daughters were raped. I think a 13-year-old girl was raped by the hoodlums,” he said. The police in Lagos and Ogun states, however, said that they were unaware of any rape.

Mother and daughter were beaten and raped

They perch awkwardly on an imitation rococo sofa in a nondescript room in the desert wastes of Mauritania.

And though the setting is incongruous, it is not as out of place as the horrific tale that Moulkheir Mint Yarba and her daughter Selek’ha have to tell.

Their story - of casual brutality, rape, slavery and the murder of their children - is one that does not belong to the 21st century.

But perhaps the most shocking part of their experience, told in a new CNN investigation Slavery’s Last Stronghold – is that it is not uncommon.

In 1981, Mauritania became the last country in the world to abolish slavery. Owning another person did not become illegal until 2007 and there has only been one successful prosecution.

The United Nations estimates that between 10 and 20 per cent of the 3.4million population are enslaved.

Moulkheir, who is in her 40s, was born a slave and spent her childhood tending her master’s herds. When she reached puberty, her owner took her out into the fields and raped her for the first time.

In the next few years, she was to bear him five children – all of whom were also born into slavery.

Staggeringly, the tradition is so ingrained in the Mauritanian psyche that Moulkheir did not even question the way she was treated.

Face of freedom: Moulkheir's five children were also all born slaves

‘I was like an animal living with animals,’ she told CNN’s John D. Sutter when he visited the country in December as part of the network’s ongoing Freedom Project, which was set up to fight modern day slavery.

The cataclysmic event which was to shatter her existence forever took place on an ordinary afternoon when she returned home from tending the goats.

Lying dead in the dust outside the hut was her youngest child, a little girl who had only just started to crawl.

Moulkheir’s master – and the child’s father – had dumped the baby outside to die.

He told her she would work faster without the girl tied to her back.

Moulkheir asked to bury the baby. The man refused.

‘(He told me) her soul was a dog’s soul,’ she said.

She was only able to lay her child to rest at the end of the day, in a shallow grave with no burial rites.

‘I only had my tears to console me,’ she told the anti-slavery activists who eventually helped free her.
‘I cried a lot for my daughter and the situation I was in. Instead of understanding, they ordered me to shut up.’

Girl dies after horror gang rape

An 18-year old Ukrainian girl died Thursday almost three weeks after suffering a gang rape attack by youths which shocked the nation and raised new doubts about the competence of its police.

Oksana Makar was raped by three young men in their early 20s, strangled, burned alive and then left for deView Postad in the attack in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv, investigators have said.

The victim was found by a passer-by after she was dumped by her attackers at an abandoned construction site. She was hospitalised with 55 percent burns in a critical condition, requiring the amputation of one of her arms.

Oksana Makar died of her injuries in a specialist hospital in the eastern city of Donetsk where she had been taken after her rescue, the clinic announced.

Her heart stopped beating after she suffered a pulmonary haemorrhage and she died despite three attempts to resuscitate her, the chief doctor of the Donetsk Burns centre, Emil Fistal, told AFP.

He said the fact she was able to survive for three weeks since the attack, which occured on March 9 or 10, according to the source, had only been possible due to intense treatment and therapy.

“Imagine. She was strangled and they (the attackers) thought she had died. So they burned her. She was lying there 10 hours in the freezing cold and inhaled the by-products of the burning,” Fistal said.

President Viktor Yanukovych sent condolences to her relatives while Prime Minister Mykola Azarov vowed that the attackers would be punished “without compromise.”

“Millions of Ukrainians believed that Oksana would survive and prayed for her, offering blood, buying medicine,” Azarov said. “Everyone wants that such a thing never happens again.”

The case has caused a public outcry in Ukraine, exposing incompetence by the law-enforcement authorities and the extent of social problems in industrial cities like Mykolayiv which are riddled with drugs and AIDS.

Ukrainian media had alleged that the suspected attackers — two of whom were initially allowed to go free — are the sons of parents with strong connections to leading local officials.

The mother of one suspect used to be the head of a district in the Mykolayiv region, the regional interior ministry confirmed, prompting allegations the authorities had been trying to keep a lid on the whole affair.

Meanwhile, her mother controversially posted a footage of Oksana in hospital on YouTube in a harrowing video where she shows the bloodied stump of her arm and, apparently barely able to speak, says she feels “awful”.

The three suspects were all arrested soon after the body was discovered but two were then released, prompting demonstrations by Ukrainians in cities across the country as well as the prominent feminist group Femen.

Femen staged a topless protest at the Ukrainian general prosecutors office in Kiev, brandishing slogans like “Death to Sadists!” and “Oksana, Live!” from the entrance porch of the building.

All three men were again placed under arrest on March 13. Two suspects were then charged with gang rape and one with rape and attempted murder.

Ukrainian interior ministry spokesman Volodymyr Polishchuk told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency that all three had now been charged with premeditated rape and murder.

According to the interior ministry, several officials from the police and local prosecutors were fired and reprimanded for initially letting the suspects go free.

If convicted, the three face between 15 years and life in jail, although the brutality of the crime has renewed public debate about the use of the death penalty which was abolished in Ukraine over a decade ago.

Barely two weeks after a young lady identified as Faith Akin was allegedly raped to death by a middle aged man, a similar incident has been reported at the Epe Police Station.

According to the report, 29-year-old Titus Ime raped his in-law, a 19-year-old woman identified as Blessing John, to death.

The incident occurred in a forest at Epe. The suspect allegedly trailed Blessing to her father’s farm, where he raped her to death.

Ime, reporting the incident, said he assaulted Blessing due to her refusal to date him. The rapist cum murderer blamed his dastardly act on his “great love" for the deceased.

“I just moved to Lagos from Akwa -Ibom State to look for a job when I met Blessing. She is my in-law, as my uncle is married to her elder sister," he said.

"As soon as I set my eyes on her, I fell in love with her but I kept it to myself. When I could not bear it anymore, I went to her to declare my love for her but she turned me down. I kept pestering her but she refused blatantly that she did not love me; this made me angry.”

Ime added that despite Blessing’s refusal to date him, he had to device a means to force her to have s*x with him.

“I did not intend to kill Blessing but my feeling for her was very strong. So after monitoring her movement for some time, I discovered that she goes to the farm to uproot cassava in the evening with her father. That day, I trailed her from her house to the forest. She was alone and she did not know I was following her, when she got into the dense forest and there was no one in sight, I ran ahead of her and grabbed her, and started declaring my love for her but she turned me down.

"I was very angry and I grabbed her dress. She started struggling with me but I took a big stick and hit her on her head, she slumped immediately and I bend down over her and removed her skirt and had s*x with her. All this while, she did not respond but I still had s*x with her a second time but I do not know that she was dead; I thought she was just unconscious.”

After committing the act, the suspect hid in the forest for four days. He however came out of his hiding when he could not bear the hunger anymore, and reported himself to his family who then handed him over to the police for prosecution.

Blessing’s corpse were discovered by her father and has been deposited at a public mortuary for autopsy, while the case has been transferred to the Homicide department at Panti, Yaba for further investigation.

A 15-year-old student at Bechem Presbyterian Senior High School (Bechem Presec) in the Tano South District of the Brong Ahafo Region has allegedly been raped by seven of her fellow students.

The seven men, between the ages of 18 and 20, reportedly laced the girl’s drink with an undisclosed drug that put her to sleep before they unleashed their libido on her one after the other.

The first year female student was found in a guest house unconscious and was resuscitated by a team of medical personnel at Techimantia Hospital after some of her teachers saw her almost dead and rushed her to the hospital.

Hospital sources told DAILY GUIDE that the girl was given several drips of transfusion in an attempt to revive her and she spent a number of days in the hospital.

Doctors have directed the school authorities to bring the victim back to the hospital in a month’s time for her to take an HIV/AIDS and pregnancy tests.

The incident occurred on February 24, 2012 at a guest house during an Inter-School Zonal Sports competition held at Techimantia, near Bechem.

The Bechem District Police Commander, DSP Emmanuel Baah, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the defilement was reported to the police three days after the incident had occurred.

DSP Baah said seven students of Presec connected to the crime were immediately arrested and kept in police custody but were released on bail the following day.

He said investigations were ongoing.

According to Mr Baah, because the girl was drugged, she could not identify the particular boys who defiled her.

He however said the victim was able to tell that the drink was bought for her by the seven suspects who were the last people she was with before the incident happened.

Meanwhile, the school authorities have been accused by some residents in the town for trying to shield the boys from facing justice.

Some of the teachers in the school also expressed their disgust at the manner in which the issue was being handled as the staff had not been officially told about the incident.

The school authorities have refused to grant audience to DAILY GUIDE.

Since DAILY GUIDE got wind of the incident about two weeks ago, it has been to the school twice to get an official position of the incident, but all to no avail as the headmaster was said to have travelled all the time.

His two deputies have also declined to make any comment on the incident.

Attempts to get the headmaster’s number to contact him on phone also proved unsuccessful.

The Tano South District Director of Education, Mary Gyimah, confirmed the alleged gang-rape in an interview with DAILY GUIDE.

She said that the headmaster informed her about the incident and she directed him to submit a full report on it to her outfit.

Madam Gyimah said the headmaster was yet to submit the said report to her office.

DAILY GUIDE’s investigations have established that the school authorities are yet to take any action against the suspects.

They have not even summoned the students before the school’s disciplinary committee.

The victim, this paper learnt, has reported back to school.

DAILY GUIDE learnt that she has been going through serious mental trauma and is being stigmatised.

Meanwhile, some of the girls in the school who spoke to DAILY GUIDE under anonymity said they longer felt secure in the school because the school authorities were not prepared to come to their defence in case they were in trouble.

According to the aggrieved girls, what had happened to their colleague and the school authorities’ indifference in fighting the case to get those boys punished were ample evidence to their assertions.

OSOGBO-An ex- corps member, who alleged that an Osun monarch raped her, was Tuesrday, requested to remove her pants in the Chambers of the judge. According to reports, this request by the defence counsel, Mr Taofeek Tewogbade led to an uproar in the courtroom.

Tewogbade said that his request was to enable him and other counsel see the bruises she sustained on her private part as a result of the alleged rape.

The state prosecuting counsel, Mr Biodun Badeora, objected to the request and prayed the court to call the defence counsel to order, adding that the request was intended to insult the raped victim.

Badeora said that the medical doctor, who examined the victim gave evidence before the court, and wondered why the defence counsel wanted to examine the victim by himself.

The prosecuting counsel said: “She cannot exhibit nudity in court.”

The request of the defence counsel was overruled by the judge, Justice Jide Falola, who said that there was no reason for such an examination.

The alleged rape victim also said that she did not receive any gift or bargained to collect N50,000 from the monarch.
When cross examined by the Defence Counsel, Tewogbade, the ex-corps member said that the monarch, Oba Adebukola Alli, threw a bundle of N200 notes at her.

She said: “But l refused to take the money, l did not even know the actual amount, all l knew was that it was a bundle of N200 notes, but he forced himself in, in spite of my refusal.”

Earlier, Tewogbade had put it to the girl that there wouldn’t have been any scandal if the monarch had given her N50,000, a suggestion she rejected.

She however, agreed that prior to the date of the incident, the monarch visited her in the hospital when she was sick, but denied that the monarch paid her hospital bill or bought her a telephone handset.
Falola adjourned the case to May 2, for defence’s address.

A nine-year-old pupil of Sunshine Nursery and Primary School on Friday narrated before a High Court sitting in Ife, Osun State, how she was raped by her teacher, Mr. Francis Ijiwande when she went to urinate behind her classroom.

At the hearing on Friday, the pupil (name withheld) alleged that Teacher Francis had forceful carnal knowledge of her in 2010.

Below is the nine year old girl's sad story

“Teacher Francis was my teacher in primary four. I was in primary five when he raped me. When I was urinating behind the classroom, I saw uncle standing at my front.

“As I was urinating, uncle pushed me down. He removed my pant and threw it away. I shouted for help but no one came to my rescue. Uncle removed his trousers and boxer. He then lay on me and removed his private part and put it inside my private part.

“I felt the pains in my thigh and back when uncle was on me. Uncle did not stay long on me. I also felt the pains after uncle stood up. I managed to stand up and stay with my younger brothers, who were waiting for my father at the front of my school.”

When asked if she told her parents her ordeal, the victim replied, “I did not tell my parents because Uncle (Teacher Francis) threatened to kill me. I only complained of back and thigh pains. My parents gave me Paracetamol, but the pains persisted.”

She explained that her mother discovered the fate that had befallen her four days later when the pains did not subside. “My mother called me in the evening and ordered me to remove my pant. She discovered something like mucus and clotted blood at my private part. My mother shouted and she started crying. My father woke and we all prayed together and we went to sleep.

“The day, my parents took me to a hospital. A doctor conducted a test on me. We later went to a police station where I made statement on what Uncle did to me and he was arrested.

“Two policemen followed me to where Uncle raped me. My parents and Aunty Bisi, the proprietress of the school, also followed us. Aunty Bisi called me aside and told me not to mention Uncle’s name again. She told me the police would kill him and that I would not see him again.”

Testifying before the court, a Professor of Gynecology, Orji Okechukwu, who conducted a test on the victim, confirmed that the pupil was actually raped.

During cross-examination, the teacher claimed he was innocent of the allegations being made by the girl, stressing that he didn't do such.

After listening to both parties, the presiding judge, Justice O. Siyanbola adjourned the matter till April 18, for further hearing

Hearing continued yesterday at an Osogbo High Court on the case of an alleged rape of 23-year-old Helen Okpara, who was a National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) member by a traditional ruler in Osun State, Oba Adebukola Alli, the Alowa of Ilowa in Obokun local government area of the state. The victim revealed how the monarch raped and bruised her private part.

“The monarch came over me and I started panicking and ran into a toilet where he started struggling with my clothes and pulled it off. He collected my clothes and said he was going to soak them in water. He came inside the room and switched off the light, he struggled with me on bed and that was how he raped me. I kept shouting but the Oba told me that nobody would hear me. And after I noticed that something was dropping from my private part.”

Okpara who recently completed her national service in Ilowa, the monarch’s domain was led in evidence by the principal state counsel, Mr. Biodun Badiora and she took her time to explain to the court how Oba Adebukola forced her to bed.

Miss Okpara, while narating her ordeal said, “I was engaged by the monarch to distribute forms for a computer training he organized and after distributing the computer training form to the participants, I told the Oba that we are through for the day and he said I should wait that he was going to drop me on the way to my house. So I waited for him and he drove me in his car but when we got to the front of my house where I was expected to drop, he said I would have to follow him to Osogbo for the registration of the forms, saying that the state government is expecting the forms.”

She explained further : “I told the Oba that it was late and that I can’t make it to Osogbo but he made a promise to bring me back to the village whatever time it cost. When we got to his house in Osogbo, he didn’t mention anything about the registration of the forms, so I told him I wanted to leave but he said it was already getting late and that he couldn’t risk driving at night.”

“I told the Oba to drop me in front of a police station that I would find my way home, he didn’t comply. Instead, he went inside a room and came out with a bundle of N200 notes and threw it at me that I should collect, because he mentioned how impressed he was with my performance at the computer training centre but I told him I didn’t need his money.”

According to Okpara, Oba Adebukola went in with the money and when he came out of the room, he had undressed

“When I told him I was leaving, he said I wasn’t going back that night and that he had been using many ways to get at me but I always turned down his advances and he said he was going to harm me that night.”

The accused monarch was in court and it would be recalled that he had told the court through his counsel, Tawfiq Tewogbade that he made love to Helen and that she enjoyed it while it lasted.

52-yr-Old Man Dies In Custody After Being Raped With Bottle

Russia’s scandal-hit police force was reeling from a new controversy Monday after a man died in detention of a ruptured intestine after allegedly being raped by officers with a champagne bottle.

Sergei Nazarov, 52, a resident of the city of Kazan in the mostly Muslim central region of Tatarstan, complained of abdominal pain after being detained by police on suspicion of theft on Friday.

He received a pain-relieving injection in the evening but was admitted to hospital the next day after being diagnosed with ruptured intestines, regional police said.

“He underwent surgery, after which he slipped into a coma and died without gaining consciousness,” police said in a statement.

Regional interior minister Asgat Safarov on Monday called an emergency meeting, saying that all those found guilty of Nazarov’s death would be severely punished.

All four senior officers at the Dalny police station in Kazan where the incident took place, including its chief, have now been sacked over a lack of trust, the regional interior ministry said in a statement.

A spokesman for investigators in Tatarstan said a probe into the incident was currently under way, saying Nazarov’s relatives insisted he was raped while in custody.

Dmitry Kolbasin, head of the Agora inter-regional rights organisation, said the man had told his family about his ordeal before his death.

He “managed to say before he died that police officers in the Dalny police department had raped him with a champagne bottle,” Kolbasin wrote on his page on LiveJournal.

Police claimed that Nazarov was drunk at the moment of his arrest while his brother-in-law Shamil told the Interfax news agency he was sober and was detained on his way to a shop.

“It’s unclear what kind of hooliganism for which he was detained they are talking about,” the man was quoted as saying.

With the controversy gaining steam, the Agora rights organisation and the Kazan Rights Centre formally asked President Dmitry Medvedev to relieve the Tatarstan police chief Safarov of his duties.

Russia’s police have faced a series of scandals in recent years, including the killing of two people by an off-duty officer in a Moscow supermarket in 2009 as well as the repeated beating of a protestor by a police officer in Saint Petersburg in 2010.
