The Delta State Police Command has arrested a man alleged to have attempted to kidnap an Italian, Mr Galvagni Renze, in Asaba, Delta.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Mr Charles Muka, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect on Friday, said that the attempted kidnap took place on Thursday in Asaba.

Muka said that the Italian, an Asaba-based businessman, was rescued at Mariam Babangida Way while the suspect and others who escaped, were trying to force him into a vehicle.

He said that the attempted abduction was foiled by a police patrol team in the city, which was promptly alerted by some members of the public.

He also disclosed that the hoodlums first dispossessed the Italian of a Toyota Hilux vehicle he was driving at the time but said that the vehicle was later recovered at Ugbolu, a neighbouring town to Asaba.

“We arrested one of the culprits of the kidnap attempt and he has also confessed the other accomplices who are on the run.

“The police are on top of the matter to ensure that all the fleeing members of the gang are arrested,” Muka said, adding that the expatriate was, however, not hurt.

Muka appealed for cooperation from members of the public “through right information that will enable us to effectively protect lives and property in the state”.
