The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika yesterday said soldiers deployed to man checkpoints across the country have no reason to take bribe from road users.
The army chief was responding to a complaint by a journalist during the Nigerian Army Transformation Stakeholders conference in Abuja that soldiers stationed at check points along the Abaji - Lokoja road were extorting money from commercial bus drivers.
Ihejirika said it was wrong for soldiers to take bribe of any form from anybody. “There was no reason whatsoever for any soldier deployed to any part of the country to take bribe in any form because they are provided with their allowances,” he said.
He said that the complaints will be promptly investigated. “This particular case will be investigated within the next hour and appropriate actions will be taken,” he said.
He said the army has set up a monitoring team “moving from one place to another” to investigate all complaints over any soldier against members of the public.
He said effort is being made to fight terrorism and a total of 2,000 soldiers were trained on how to tackle several forms of attacks.
He said the use of army uniforms by criminals could be stopped if laws banning the use of military uniforms were made. “Officers and soldiers are battling with those who peddle military uniforms illegally. There has to be a law that bans the use of army uniforms.”
