NARROW ESCAPE:Plane Crash Averted In Abuja As British Airways Overshoot Runway

But for providence, Nigeria and Nigerians would have been thrown into another round of mourning as a result of aviation disaster as a British Airways aircraft overshot the taxiway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Int'l Airport in Abuja. Reliable sources told newsmen that the situation was as a result of yet another power failure, saying the airfield lighting on the runway failed just as the plane was to torch down.

"BA’s Boeing 747 aircraft arrived at the Abuja airport around 5:15am, but as the pilot was trying to taxi the aircraft to the apron, the airfield lighting on the runway packed up, which forced the pilot to overshoot the taxiway," a source said.

As a result of the incident, Olufamous.com gathered, the aircraft was forced to remain on the runway for close to an hour before the fault was rectified. Although the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, is denying that the incident involving the BA aircraft was a result of power failure.

They claimed it was because of the closure of part of the taxiway owing to ongoing repairs. But an insider source insisted that no repair work was going on that early morning (5:11am) on the runway, adding that NAMA officials are just "trying to hide the shameful situation".
