WORRIED by the recent threat by the House of Representatives to launch impeachment proceedings on President Goodluck Jonathan over what it described as poor implementation of the 2012 budget, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has began behind- the -scene moves to save the situation.
Newsmen gathered that some top hierarchy members of the PDP have begun discussions with the leadership of the National Assembly to find a soft landing for the president. Although details of the discussions were still sketchy, a source at the PDP National Secretariat confided in Daily Trust that there were subtle moves to bring the matter under control.
It was gathered that the moves came on the heels of reports that some senators were teaming up with their House of Representatives’ counterparts on the impeachment project.
The senators reportedly met with some representatives in Abuja, at the weekend, on the budget row with the executive.
The source who wouldn’t want to be mentioned in print said: “The party is deeply worried by the impeachment threat and the leadership has initiated moves at bringing the matter under control.”
The Minority Leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamiala, who touted the impeachment move onThursday said: “President Goodluck Jonathan promised Nigerians a budget of transformation, but what we have is a budget of abracadabra and a voodoo economy.”
Backing his impeachment call with Section 143, Mr Gbajabiamila said, “If by the time we resume in September 18, budget has not been implemented by 100 per cent, we shall begin the impeachment process on Mr. President.”
