Police uncover baby factory in Akwa Ibom •Doctor pays pregnant girls N70,000

POLICE in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, have uncovered a mysterious factory where young girls are made to conceive, give birth and the babies later sold to suspected ritualists and other members of the public in Uruan Local Government Area of the state. The new babies, Nigerian Tribune gathered, are collected from the young mothers as soon as they are delivered, even as each mother is paid N70,000 after each successful delivery. 

 The state Commissioner of Police Umar Gwadabe who briefed newsmen on the development and other breakthroughs recorded by the state police command, disclosed that the said illegal home is owned by one Dr Wisdom Mbaba and is located at Ekpene Ukim, in Uruan Local Government Area of the state. 

 Gwadabe said following a tip-off from a concerned citizen of the area, the police raided the place and about seven young women, between the ages of 18 and 20 were rescued from the said operation, while the suspected proprietor of the home, Dr Mbaba, escaped but his wife, Effiong, was arrested. 

 One of the girls rescued, Aniebet Okon Sunday, told Nigerian Tribune that she had gone there to abort a five-month-old pregnancy but the doctor told her to stay with him, promising that he would pay her for the baby, which she agreed to and was paid N70,000 after delivery. “My friend took me to Doctor Wisdom when I was pregnant and wanted to do abortion but the doctor said I should stay and give birth. 

I did not even see the baby that I gave birth to. I don’t know if it was a boy or girl. It was taken away before I was able to stand up. But doctor gave me N70, 000,” Miss Sunday narrated. Nigerian Tribune gathered from reliable sources that young girls wishing to abort unwanted pregnancies were lured to the factory for abortion operation, after which the unwanted babies are negotiated and sold to ritualists by the factory dealers.

 However, Dr Mbaba’s wife Effiong who is currently in police custody, admitted that her husband was a specialist in abortion but claimed he had stopped doing the business for some years now. Asked whether she was running the business with her husband she said, “No, I don’t know anything about the business. I run a shop where I sell foodstuffs and others things.” However, the state commissioner of police said his men had been equipped to contain any security challenges in the state.

Christmas Day bombing:Kabiru Sokoto’s wife delivers baby in police cell

Wife of the alleged mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, Kabiru Abubakar Dikko, alias Kabiru Sokoto, has delivered a baby boy in a police cell where she is being detained. The wife of the Boko Haram henchman was arrested by the police after her husband escaped from police custody while he was being taken to his home for a search. 

Sources Friday said that she gave birth to a baby boy on Wednesday inside a cell at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Garki, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. Even after her husband was re-arrested at Mutum in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba, the pregnant woman was still kept in police custody until she put to bed on Wednesday. 

Sokoto was first arrested on 13 January by the police but he escaped two days later when he was being taken to his residence at Abaji in the FCT for a search. Sokoto was re-arrested in a joint military-SSS operation at a hideout at about 4:30 a.m. He had taken refuge at Umaisha in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State before he fled to Taraba where he was eventually re-arrested. 

 Spokesperson for the State Security Service, Ms Marilyn Ogar had told the media during the parade of Sokoto that the 29-year-old suspect was born to the family of Umaru Jabbi of Gagi village in Sokoto South Local Government Area on 9 May 1983. She explained that after the death of his father, the suspect’s uncle, Abubakar Dikko, adopted him and gave him his name. 

According to Ogar, the suspect, who completed his secondary education in 2003, was admitted to the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Sokoto, and described him as a “truant with extremist tendencies”. She said the suspect was declared a leader of the Boko Haram sect in Sokoto in February 2009. A N50 million bounty was placed on Sokoto for anyone that could provide information that could lead to his arrest after the police declared him wanted shortly after he escaped from custody.

Prosecutors charge Catholic nun in alleged stolen baby

A Catholic nun has been charged with being part of a child stealing operation that ran over four decades in Spain.

Sister María Gómez Valbuena is the first person to be indicted in connection with the probe into more than 100 cases of babies snatched from hospitals between the 1950s and 1980s.

She was subpoenaed to testify before investigators recently but refused to answer questions, according to sources at the Madrid prosecutor's office.

Her name has surfaced in dozens of complaints filed by mothers who claim they were robbed of their babies after giving birth at San Ramón and Santa Cristina hospitals in Madrid.

Sister María was the assistant to Dr Eduardo Vela Vela, whose name also appears in the complaints filed by mothers.

Prosecutors have decided that there is sufficient evidence to file charges against Sister María in one case, based on a woman's testimony that her daughter was taken from her in 1982 after she gave birth at the Santa Cristina Hospital.

SHOKING:Baby Br*ast-Fed to Death

The reported tragic death at midnight of a four-month-old child is now causing ripples at Emebiren street Okumagba layout Warri, Delta State.

The victim, Kenneth Ogbetuo was said to have had overdose of br*ast milk from his 25 years old mother Mary Ogbetuo.

According to sources in the neighbourhood that the mother of the baby left her big br*ast in the mouth of the baby and slept overnight, only for the father of the victim to raise alarm at about 6am the following day that his child was already stone dead.

The Father of the child Mr. Willy Ogbetuo who is popularly addressed as Baba Fryo told Weekend Champion that he had severally warned his wife not to leave br*ast in the mouth of the baby whenever she wants to sleep, stressing that each time he cautioned his wife, her response was always "go, you yeh yeh man" .

Eyewitness said as at the time Baba Fryo alerted neighbours of the unfortunate incident, the four months old child was already dead and br*ast milk mixed with blood gushed out of his two nostrils.

18-year Old Blessing John Sold Her Baby For N20,000 In Suleja

An 18-year old girl, Miss Blessing John, was on Friday, arrested by the Police in Minna, Niger state capital, for selling her two weeks old baby girl to a 50-year-old woman, Mrs. Chikodili Jude for the sum of N20,000 to feed and clothe herself.

The sale of the baby to the second suspect, who is also a widow, took place on Friday January 20, few hours after the former was delivered of the baby at the General Hospital, Minna by medical personnel.

NEWSMEN learnt that no sooner than Blessing, who claimed to be an indigene of Kwale area of Delta state, was delivered of the yet unnamed baby girl, that she allegedly expressed the desire to do away with the child in view if the fact that she could no longer locate one Emmanuel Sunday of Mechanic bye-pass, Minna who impregnated her, after he ran away in an attempt not to claim the baby.

“Sunday and I met when I was working at Kwetere Gwari mechanic village as an attendant in a restaurant. He approached me to be his girlfriend and I accepted his proposal.

He later impregnated me after making love to me. When I told him that I was pregnant for him, he picked a quarrel with me over the pregnancy and thereafter, I did not see him again until I put to bed at the General Hospital, Minna on January 18 this year,” Blessing said in an interview with Sunday Tribune.

She added: “I gave out my baby to Mrs. Chikodili James to hold her for me and she in return gave me N20,000 for feeding and clothing because I did not have any money at hand to feed and take care of myself. I told her that whenever I am able to put the amount she gave me together, I would pay her back and take my baby to my state, and she agreed.”

When she was asked whether there was any written agreement between them to that effect, she answered in the affirmative, stating that the second suspect immediately brought out a document for her so that they could both append their signatures on the memorandum of agreement.

Blessing, who informed Sunday Tribune that she had been living in Minna since 2009, noted that the second suspect allegedly brought one paper for her to sign.

“I read the paper and I understood everything that was written there. I signed and said that if I had the money she gave me, I would pay her and collect my baby from her later.

“I did not finish my secondary school education as I stopped at Senior Secondary School III when I was supposed to sit for my SSCE Ordinary Level and that of the National Examinations Council but the school authorities said I had to pay some money as examinations fees which I did not have,” she stated.

It was further gathered that the sale of the baby was allegedly facilitated by one Mrs. Martha Obialor, a 65- year-old woman resident at 1010 area of Kwetere Gwari community of the state capital, who was also being detained by the police in connection with the case, while the memorandum of agreement was drafted at the law firm of “Freedom Chambers” at SW 264, Yoruba road, Minna metropolitan area by one Mike Ekemezie Esq.

The memorandum of agreement, a copy of which is in the possession of the Sunday Tribune, read thus: “This agreement is made this 20th day of January between Blessing John of Suleja, Niger state of Nigeria (hereinafter referred to as DISCLAIMER, which expression shall, where the context so admits, include her heirs and successor-in title) on the first hand and Mrs. Chikodili Jude of Minna, Niger state of Nigeria, (hereinafter referred to as CLAIMANT which expression shall where the context so admits include her heirs and successor-in – title) on the second hand.”

Accordingly, the legal practitioner stated among other issues that the disclaimer had a female child at the General Hospital, Minna and decided to do away with the child and that the claimant agreed to take the child and also give the disclaimer a token of N20,000 to enable her (Blessing) to travel back to her station, adding that both parties now desire that their oral agreement be put in writing to be legally binding and enforceable to avoid any controversy in future.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State, Mr. Richard A. Oguche, confirmed the incident, stating that the first suspect, Miss Blessing John transferred the ownership of the two-week-old baby girl to the second suspect, Mrs. Chikodili Jude, in return for N20,000.

13 year old girl wraps new born baby in jeans; dumps it in the trash.

A 13 year old girl in suburban Illinois has been taken into custody after it emerged she wrapped up her new born baby in a pair of bloody jeans and dumped the infant boy in the trash.

The girl whose identity is being kept hidden as she’s a minor, says she didn’t realise she was pregnant when she went into labor.

An autopsy revealed the baby to have been full term but only 4 pounds and 2 ounces. Newborns generally tend to weigh between six and eight pounds.

Ironically, Illinois prides itself on its Safe Haven laws which were promulgated through the efforts of the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation.

The laws allow pregnant mothers who do not want to keep their babies, the opportunity to anonymously leave such babies outside designated locations. These babies are then put up for adoption with no questions asked.

This baby’s death was thus seen as doubly unnecessary.

Nigerian Police Arrests Year-Old Baby In Benue State

The Police in Benue State have taken hostage an entire family, including a one-year old baby, in an effort to compel the baby’s journalist-father to turn himself over to them for a story published by his newspaper. 

The baby is Wuese-ter Ibya, who was seized along with its mother, Faith Ibya, as well as Grace Ibya. Mrs. Faith Ibya is the wife of Henry Ibya, the Benue State Correspondent of Premier Newspaper, and Grace is his sister.

In a statement, the management of Roobbs Communications Network Limited, which publishes The Premier Newspaper, said that the family was forcibly taken as hostages in order to force Mr. Ibya to report himself to the police.

“We are reliably informed that the police authorities in Benue State are acting under the instruction of the governor who was visibly angered by the uncomplimentary story about his wife which bordered on extortion of money from Benue women,” the statement said, “under the guise of improving the lot of Benue women in the celebration of the fifth edition of Benue Women, where the women were coerced to pay unwholesome amounts of money, despite the state government having released the sum of N100 million for the said function.”

Roobbs Communications described placing Mr. Ibya's wife, year-old baby and sister under arrest as “barbaric” and out of tune with the laws of the Federal Government of Nigeria, particularly in view of the new the Freedom of Information law. 

“It is sad that the Nigerian police, despite spirited efforts by the government to redeem its battered image and position it on proper pedestal to discharge its duties in accordance with the law, has continued to shoot itself in the foot with its recklessness and abusive tendencies,” the newspaper management said, calling for the hostages to be released with immediate effect and the law allowed to prevail.

A Brazilian woman who has given birth to a baby with two heads, admitted she had initially expected twins.

Maria de Nazare, gave birth by caesarean at a hospital in Anajas, in Brazil's northern Para state, with her newborn weighing 9.9lbs. And in a tribute to the religious celebrations at Christmas, she has decided to call the pair Emanoel and Jesus.

Following the birth of her baby, mother Maria, 25, admitted that she had been told she was set to welcome twins. 

But following a number of tests, doctors have revealed that the baby has two brains and two spines but shares one heart, lungs, liver and pelvis. 

The hospital's director, Claudionor Assis de Vasconcelos, told Brazil's O Povo newspaper that the woman decided to travel to the hospital because she was feeling strong abdominal pains.

UK Police Seize Day-Old Baby from Nigerian Parents

What will you do if you have just been delivered of a baby and, before you could even think of informing family and friends to come celebrate with you, some policemen storm your bedside and seize the new baby for one stupid reason? Well, the predictable action is that you'll fight back with all you've got.

This is exactly what two Nigerians - Mrs. Gloria Musa (from Abia State) and her husband, Mr. Musa (from Adamawa State) - are currently passing through in the United Kingdom after nine

Norwich Park Hospital and took away their new baby few hours after coming into the world.

The newly born baby’s seizure in hospital took place on June 12, 2010. But three months earlier, on April 8, 2010, the same policemen - acting at the behest of the Haringey Social Service - had also seized all five children of the Musas, claiming that 'Mrs. Musa was a s*x worker'. More worrisome is that fact that more than one year after, the six seized children are still in the custody of the same Haringey Social Service, while every efforts by their parents to secure their release has failed.

Investigations revealed that the social service secretly obtains interim care order (ICO) every month from the court to validate its illegal action since the evidence they are peddling against the Musas is untenable. As a result, the action is generating ripples both in Nigeria where the couple hails from and the UK.

The matter was recently brought before Nigeria's House of Reps by Hon. Abike Dabiri, and the Federal Government was urged to send a message to the British Government and ensure the Musas are immediately reunited with their kids until evidence show any wrongdoings on their part. In fact, it was revealed that paternity tests conducted on all the children in the UK showed they belonged to the couple. One wonders why Nigerians are not seriously condemning this injustice!

Recalling her experience when nine policemen surrounded her and seized her baby in the hospital, Mrs. Musa said: "My joy of safe delivery was cut short; as i was physically manhandled, emotionally battered, and psychologically traumatised by the ill-treatment from the British police.

"While recuperating from the pains of labour, I was awakened by the unwelcomed guests whom I would never forget in a hurry - Nine hefty looking police personnel. Naturally, I, like every other woman, would prefer being killed to letting it (baby) go easily, hence, I held on and closely to my baby (but) the Haringey police station applied every force at their disposal, unleashing terror on my helpless self and bruised me all over until they over powered me and took my baby.

"My request for their reasons and the authority empowering them to dispossess me of my new born baby was denied, rebuffed, and rejected with brazen arrogance... My family has done practically nothing to deserve this painful and unwarranted suppression."

Mrs. Musa is pleading with the government of her country, Nigeria, to intervene on her behalf and ensure the matter is investigated thoroughly so that her children could return to her in good health and in good time.

Fellow Nigerians this is another case of intimidation against one of our own. We should not just read this and leave the family to its plight. We must all condemn this clear case of man's inhumanity to man! It could happen to anybody.

10-Year-Old Girl, Gives Birth to Baby Boy

A 10-year-old girl in Mexico recently gave birth to a premature baby boy, bringing the country's strict abortion laws into the spotlight.

Abortion laws in heavily-Catholic Mexico are left to be decided by individual states. Some states, such as Puebla, where the 10-year-old girl lives, prohibit the procedure unless the woman can prove the pregnancy is a result of s*xual assault.

According to LifesiteNews.com, lawmakers from the state of Puebla approved an anti-abortion amendment in 2009, which says life begins "from the moment of conception to natural death, except in cases foreseen by law."

Sixteen of Mexico's 31 states have similar abortion laws.

The 10-year-old girl suffered from "life-complicating issues and seizures," the New York Daily News reported. She eventually gave birth by Caesarian section. The baby, born 11 weeks premature, is still in the hospital fighting pneumonia.

A doctor at the hospital said the young mother is recuperating "very well" and comes to feed her baby every four hours, reported Mexican news site, Excelsior.

There is an investigation underway to determine who assaulted the young girl.

Approximately 90 percent of the Mexican population identifies as Catholic and the Roman Catholic Church's strict stance against abortion is considered an influence on Mexico's strict pro-life laws.

Vida Humana Internacional (VHI), a pro-life organization that promotes the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church in Spanish-speaking countries, including Mexico, supports the strict anti-abortion laws and argues that even in cases of s*xual assault or when the pregnancy poses health risks to the mother, even one as young as 10 years old, abortion is an immoral act.

"In the end, the child at any stage of development has all the rights of any other human being and may not be directly and voluntarily killed," Magaly Llaguno, the Executive Director of VHI, told The Christian Post in an email.

She added: "Such an act is, as John Paul II emphasized, 'always gravely immoral.' Increasingly so, the default position of physicians today is to recommend a direct abortion. But such a moral evil is never necessary as the death of a child never brings about the health of a woman."

However, Mexico City's governmental Human Rights Commission said the country's abortion laws "will worsen the serious public health problem of clandestine abortions in unhealthy conditions.

In addition, there are severe health risks that mothers under age 16 face. According to Time magazine, they are four times more likely to die during childbirth and are more susceptible to developing anemia, postpartum hemorrhage, depression and other mental disorders.

Due to the difficulties of child labor, minors who give birth also make up 65 percent of the women who develop obstetric fistula - a devastating condition in which a hole develops in the birth canal, causing an uncontrollable leakage of urine and feces into the vagina.
