DE*DLY CORONAVIRUS VIRUS: Be Cautious!

Lagos State Commissioner of health has warned residents and local authorities to be extremely cautious while maintaining physical contact with other persons (e.g. shaking hands), as the deadly Coronavirus can be transmitted easily from an infected person to another.

According to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, the virus can be transmitted through coughing and sneezing, as well as close contact (such as touching or shaking the hands of an infected person), and, moreover, touching one’s mouth, nose or eyes after having been in contact with contaminated objects or surfaces.

The commissioner explained that human Coronavirus usually causes mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illnesses and can progress to severe respiratory illness and pneumonia — particularly in the aged, young and already ill people.

“There is no specific treatment for this illnesses caused by Coronavirus. Most people with the virus will recover on their own and they may require supportive treatment which includes staying at home, resting and drinking a lot of fluids.

However, those that progressed to severe distress will need to be admitted into the hospital for specialized care,” he said.

Dr. Idris noted that the risk of infection of the virus can be reduced if people observe a high standard of personal and environmental hygiene by often washing the hands with soap and water; not touching the eyes, nose or mouth frequently; avoiding close contact with people who are sick; ensuring that objects used by the sick are sterilized; and avoiding being in an overcrowded place.

The significance and economic impact of coronaviruses as causative agents of the common cold are hard to assess because, unlike rhinoviruses (another common cold virus), human coronaviruses are difficult to grow in the laboratory. Coronaviruses can even cause pneumonia.

In 2003, following the outbreak of Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS; officially named the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV)), over 8,000 infection cases were recorded , about 10% of which resulted in death.

In September 2012, what is believed to be a sixth new type of coronavirus was discovered in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The World Health Organisation(W.H.O) update on 28 September 2012 said that the virus did not seem to pass easily from person to person.

However, on May 12, 2013, a case of contamination from human to human in France was confirmed by the French Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

In addition, cases of person-to-person transmission have been reported by the Ministry of Health in Tunisia.

So far there have been twenty-two cases and ten deaths in eastern part of Saudi Arabia.

A bad boy who was left with half a head following a dramatic accident has spoken out for the first time - blaming his astonishing appearance on a drink and drugs binge.

Carlos 'Halfy' Rodriguez, who also goes by the name Sosa, lost a large portion of his brain and skull in a crash after flying through his car's windscreen and landing head-first on the road.

In a new video he has used his appearance and story to warn others not to drink and take drugs.

Doctors were forced to cut away large amounts of flesh and bone to help him survive and he has since been able to continue his life in Miami, Florida.

Carlos 'Halfy' Rodriguez lost a large portion of his brain and skull after flying through his car's windscreen and landing on his head.

'I was barred out on drugs. I was driving and I hit a pole and flew out the front window and landed on my head,' he said in a new warning message on You Tube.

Showing his head to camera he added: 'And this is how the old boy has come out. That is why it is not good drinking and driving or drugness (sic) and driving. It is no good kids.'

According to the German tabloid Bild he had the accident aged 14.

'I was with a cousin and a friend stole the car, there was a near-fatal car accident. As the speed was too fast we lost control of the car and crashed,' he said.

Mr Rodriguez shot to fame two years ago after he was was arrested for allegedly soliciting prostitution.

Miami Police had problems with their paperwork and his forms contained no name and simply the description 'half a head'.

Woman with two vaginas offered $1m to star in pornographic movie

A ONE-IN-A-MILLION British woman with two vaginas has been offered $1MILLION to appear in a porn film.

Hazel Jones, 27, revealed her rare condition - called known as uterus didelphys - on This Morning this month.

And the pretty blonde - who says she likes to visit s*x clubs with her husband - has now received the mega-bucks offer from porn supremo Steve Hirsch.

The Vivid Entertainment boss wrote to her, making the offer, and praising her as an "extraordinary woman".

The letter said: "I would like to make you an offer to star in an upcoming Vivid production.
"We would pay you up to $1m (worth £645,000) for your services."

Hazel is proud of her condition, known as uterus didelphys.
When a girl is born her uterus starts as two tubes, then a septum barrier should break down and one uterus forms.

But in Hazel's body, the two tubes have made two separate uteruses and two vaginas and two cervixes.

It was in her late teens when Hazel realised that her body was different to her friends' and had a septum dividing her two uteruses.

Hazel revealed she had to lose her virginity TWICE as she had two hymens - the membrane that surrounds the external vaginal opening - to break.

Hazel's proud hubby Riki said: "Hazel's body may be different but it's not something you notice unless she tells you and I wouldn't change her for the world.

Hazel appeared on ITV's This Morning, and Dr Dawn Harper said of her body: "Although it is relatively common to have a septum within the uterus, to actually have two separate uteruses is much rarer - one in a million."

Typhoon kills 500, hundreds missing

Cagayan De Oro: Rescuers searched for more than 450 people still missing in the southern Philippines on Sunday after flash floods and landslides swept houses into rivers and out to sea, killing more than 500 people in areas ill-prepared to cope with deadly storms.

Cagayan de Oro and nearby Iligan cities on Mindanao island were worst hit when Typhoon Wasi slammed ashore while people slept late on Friday and early Saturday, sending torrents of water and mud through villages and stripping mountainsides bare.

The Philippine National Red Cross estimated 532 people were killed in eight provinces in the southern Mindanao region, with more than 450 still missing. "Our office was swamped with hundreds of requests to help find their missing parents, children and relatives," Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the PNRC, told reporters. "We're helping coordinate the search with local government, army, police and even other aid agencies." Floods washed away entire houses with families inside in dozens of coastal villages in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

"This is the first time this has happened in our city," Vicente Emano, mayor of Cagayan de Oro, said in a radio interview. He said officials in the area did not receive adequate warning before the typhoon struck. The latest report by the state disaster agency said 332 people had been killed and 281 were missing. It said adequate warnings were given to officials and residents three days before the typhoon made landfall on Friday.

Disaster and health officials were struggling to deal with the scores of bodies that have been recovered. Some have been stacked one on top of another in local mortuaries. "I saw for myself bloated bodies of women and children, not less than 100," Vice President Jejomar Binay told Philippines radio as he toured the worst hit areas in Cagayan de Oro. Binay distributed food packs and ordered the relocation of families living near waterways and other hazards.

Brigadier General Roland Amarille, head of an army task force in Iligan, said soldiers had been mobilized to recover bodies and build coffins. Under-staffed mortuaries were unable to cope with the flood of bodies. "We need body bags and lime to deal with too many cadavers," Amarille said, fearing an outbreak of disease. "Local mortuaries are no longer accepting cadavers and they are even asking people to bury the dead at once because there are too many bodies even in hallways," he said.

Most of the fatalities were from a slum area on an island sandwiched by two rivers in Iligan. "About 70 per cent of the houses on the island were washed into the sea," Amarille said. Mindanao island, the southernmost in the Philippines, is a mineral-rich region that also produces rice and corn but is not normally on the path of an average 20 typhoons that hit the Southeast Asian country each year.

"This poses challenges to us ... We need to educate people with this kind of change in climate," Pang said. "The volume of rainfall for one month fell in just one day." Typhoons normally strike the central Visayas region and the south and east of Luzon, the main island in the north. Carmelita Pulosan, 42, said she and eight family members and neighbours survived by sitting on top of the tin roof of their house as it drifted miles into the open sea after floodwaters swept through their village.

They were rescued by a passing cargo ship. "There was a deafening sound followed by a rush of water. We found ourselves in the river and the current took us out to the sea," Pulosan, from Cagayan de Oro said. "The current was very strong. God is really good to us. He saved my family," she said. Only one 3-storey building was left standing in their village, Pulosan said. The PNRC's Pang said many officials and residents did not expect such a huge volume of water cascading down mountains into river systems because the area is not in the usual typhoon belt.

She said Cagayan de Oro last experienced floods in 2009 but there was only minimal damage and no deaths. Many found their homes destroyed after returning to shattered villages, Pang said. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States, a major ally of the Philippines, was ready to assist Philippine authorities. The Chinese embassy will donate $ 10,000 to help in the relief efforts, an embassy official said.

Wasi, downgraded to a tropical storm with gusts of up to 80 km per hour (50 miles per hour), is hovering about 60 km (40 miles) west of the southwestern city of Puerto Princesa and is expected to move out of Philippine waters later on Sunday. One Million Nigerians are Blind

MINISTER of health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu has said that about one million Nigerians are blind and some three million others visually impaired. He stressed that studies show that women are the most vulnerable and advocated promotion of eye healthcare in order to attain the Millennium Development Goals targets.

Chukwu, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Fatima Bamidele, disclosed this at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja on the World Sight Day with the theme, ‘Eye health and development: A good vision for all to attain the MDGs.’

According to him, over 50 per cent of children who become blind before the age of five may not live to celebrate their sixth birthday. “Also, improving female gender access to eye care services will ensure access to opportunities for self reliance and contribution to national development,” he said.

Chukwu has also invited a Lagos-based herbal medicine practitioner, Dr. Harts Ugochukwu to verify his claims that he has cure for the dreaded HIV/AIDS disease, and to assist the government in curbing the menace.

In a letter of invitation from the Department of Public Health National AIDS/STDs Control Programme (NASCP) dated September 30, 2011 signed by the National Coordinator, HIV/AIDS Division, Dr. Emeka Asadu, he stated that the attention of the minister has been drawn to his recent interview with a national newspaper claiming that he has cured over 40,000 patients infected with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.
