This will be interesting and i look forward to what Mikel Obi has to say. Super Eagles Head coach Stephen Keshi has revealed that Mikel Obi and Osaze Odemwingie are still in his plans even though the Chelsea midfielder has been ignoring his calls.

Keshi admits that he is not happy that Mikel has not been picking his calls and not responding to his messages inquiring about the Chelsea star’s health. But the coach insists that the midfielder is still an important member of the Super Eagles.


“When I heard that Mikel was injured, I tried several times to get across to him on the phone but, surprisingly, he did not respond,” Keshi told completesportsnigeria.com. “He also has not responded to messages I sent to him through text. This is very unlike him and I am still expecting him to call or answer my text.

“I will still call him since he is an important member of the team. It is my duty to know how my players are faring in their respective clubs. Anyway, I am still expecting him to call me since we have national business together.”

80-year-old granny slams Sir Alex Ferguson's diamond formation

He'd never actually admit to it, but Sir Alex Ferguson is more open to suggestions about Manchester United's tactics than you might think. So when an 80-year-old gran from Rochdale turned the 'hairdryer' on the manager during a TV phone-in, Fergie had no choice but to listen. 

 

Margaret, as the caller was known, blasted United's 'winger-less' midfield formation in the midweek Champions League match over Braga.

She called the diamond set-up favoured by Ferguson in the 3-2 win 'stupid' and said she could have a heart attack if United keep having to come from behind in games.

 

And Fergie was obviously listening, because the diamond was ditched for Sunday’s 3-2 win at Chelsea in favour of a conventional line of four. Margaret rang United's in-house television station, MUTV, where former players David May and Quinton Fortune were hosting a Thursday night chat show. 

 

And despite United coming from two goals down to win against Braga, Margaret was not amused.'Please don't play the diamond at Chelsea,' she said. 'If you want me to have a word with the manager, I will.

 

'I’ve seen every good player you’ve ever had. And they weren’t that stupid, giving goals away, at the beginning.'Have you not noticed all the goals you're giving away are when you're playing that stupid diamond position? We have to go back to playing normally and catch up.'

 

When May, who made gate-crashing Champions League celebrations cool long before John Terry, started bantering with her, she turned the barrels on him.

'It isn't entertaining when you're 80 years old to watch goals going in from the other side,' said Margaret.'I don't like it. It's going to give me a heart attack and I’m 80. You wouldn't like to give me a heart attack. 'I have an opinion and it's certainly not the diamond. They don't know what to do - they run around like lost sheep.'

 

Ferguson even mentioned Margaret’s scathing comments in his press conference before the Chelsea game, promising to drop the diamond.

'I'd better not upset her,' he said. 'Did you hear her on MUTV? She's 80, phoned up and said "I'm fed up watching this diamond".

'She said "Tell that manager to stop playing that diamond". So I better not play it.'

And Margaret might expect a direct line to the manager now, after United's win at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba double for Ivorians sparks riot in Dakar

Two goals from Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba sparked a riot in Senegal on Saturday forcing the abandonment of the biggest African Nations Cup qualifier of the weekend after police fired tear gas in the stadium. 

 

The trouble in Dakar overshadowed qualification for Ghana, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia and holders Zambia who are all through to the finals in South Africa in January.

Drogba's latest talismanic performance proved too much for the Senegal fans who invaded the pitch, threw objects and lit small fires in the packed stands after their team went 2-0 down and 6-2 behind on aggregate in the final round tie.

 

Police were forced to clear the away supporters to safety, leading many of them to the middle of the pitch, and then sent a vehicle on to the field to evacuate the match officials before the game was called off about 14 minutes from full time.

It is likely the Ivorians will be awarded the tie but there was no official confirmation on Saturday from the governing Confederation of African Football whose Cairo office was closed.

Striker Drogba's free kick just after halftime extended the Ivorians' two-goal lead from the first leg and then converted a 71st minute penalty which sparked the violence.

The riot, which highlighted the explosive nature of the African game, put a dampener on a day of excitement on the pitch across the continent with Zambia needing a penalty shootout win to ensure they can defend their crown at next year's finals.It took 20 penalty kicks before the Zambians edged Uganda 9-8 after they drew 1-1 on aggregate having lost the second leg of their final round qualifier 1-0 in Kampala.

Tunisia also scraped into the finals on away goals after being held 0-0 by modest Sierra Leone at home in Monastir, following a 2-2 draw in last month's first leg.Morocco's Youssef Al Arabi scored five minutes from time, after earlier missing two gilt-edged chances, to give Morocco the decisive third goal in a 4-0 win over Mozambique in Marrakesh where they overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit.

But the tie was clouded in controversy with the turnaround coming just after the hour mark when Morocco were awarded a soft penalty that led to Mozambique captain Miro being sent off.

Ghana were first to qualify by beating Malawi 1-0 away in Lilongwe for a 3-0 aggregate triumph thanks to Afriyie Acquah's debut goal. Mali went on the rampage with a 4-1 win over Botswana on the road in Lobatse to advance 7-1 on aggregate.

They were outdone by Nigeria, who thumped Liberia 6-1 in Calabar with the Chelsea pair Victor Moses (2) and John Obi Mikel (penalty) on the scoresheet. Nigeria scored inside a minute and swamped the visitors for an 8-3 aggregate triumph.

Eight second-leg ties will be played on Sunday to complete the 15 qualifiers for the January 19 to February 10 tournament.

Siasia,,once a hero and favourite,,,now ridiculed by an Ungrateful Country

Nigeria football fans and supporters are disorientated people who think shallow and one-sided.We think we are passionate about football, but all we are exuding is why we are failures in our respective lives.

Just like yesterday,i still remember the yearnings of the masses or the so-called Nigerian Fans!!!

All spoke with one voice for the appointment of coach samson siasia as the right choice to lead Nigeria Football to the place of dreams as he was seen as one of the most successful coaches in the African Continent.

How time flies and people change with time.Going through all radio stations in my car,all i hear is one voice  "Sack Samson Siasia" because he failed to honour the terms of his contract which is "Qualify Nigeria for the Nations Cup".

How i wonder why we never learn or try to be non-predictable,atleast just for once.IF success is built only around success,then nobody will be successfull because "success is the result of countless number of failures with a never say die positive altitude".

We dont need to be objective all the time,things dont go well as planned all the time,we dont need to take and stand by the first thing our DIRTY minds tells us which is "Sacking a  man for not performing".

When are we going to look at success as a step-wise process and do things the whole world will look at and say "These people are humans afterall".

"I am angry with Samsaon siasia, YES.

I FEEL that he should be sacked since he failed to meet the terms of his contract,,,YES.

He didnt show some fatherly altitudes when it mattered most,,YES.

He failed to look into the local league and get more hungry players."

But this is not the solution to our problems,the man cant be a failure all of a sudden unless everything he has achieved is a fluke or he was just dead lucky.

Also,looking at the situation on ground,the only lost match in the nations cup campaign was the away game to Guinea conceeded by Coach Austin Eguavoen.

If mourhinho can be given a second chance to win the spanish cup and win the champions league, Siasia should be allowed to stay.

He is our very own,and should be groomed.We have been too serious sacking coaches and expecting too much from our coaches,lets expect  a little twist once or twice.

I dont know the man, but there was once something attractive about him,,lets learn to stay with people during their low and high things,people dont win all the time but we live to fight another day.

I remember telling a friend last week,that i forsee a time not very far where Barcelona with all the stars and glamour at the present will be ridicled and insulted in the near future.This sacking phylosophy puts a harder pressure on the next coach who thinks he is only wanted for his glory and nt his mistakes.JOSE MOURIHNO is loved because of his success and failures,lets love our own like that.

If I was the NFF chairman,this is what i would say to be honourable

"We are sorry we didnt qualify the nation for the all important Nations cup.We tried our best but on the day it mattered most,we were not just lucky.

We love football and want to always win but things dont go as plan all the time,we only give our best and expect our best to be better than what other people will give but perhaps the Guineans gave better and they deserved this.We will meet in the battle field next time.We made mistakes just to correct other mistakes but life is a learning process and if we dont learn from our mistakes and find scape goats we will never get there.Yes,Siasia didnt qualify us as contracted but it is left for the other party to enforce the contract and sack him.After delibrate consideration of the issue on ground,the board has decided to give him another chance and give him another fair contract where he would be duly responsible for his mistakes and not be axed on the mistake of another man.

If as Nigerians,we want to axe someone as a scape goat,i duly offer my resignation as the chairman of NFF because i believe rebuilding takes time and sacrifice.The guineans have paid for theirs in the past,it is our time.i believe in Nigeria and in nigerians.Thank You"

Do this and watch heaven and earth shake because this is the hallmark of great man and never have i seen a Nigerian leader do this.

Arsenal boss Wenger slams "disrespectful" Xavi

Arsenal rejected bids from Barcelona for the Spanish international last year and the European champions have again been linked with a move for Fabregas this close-season but Wenger was adamant that he would not lose his captain.

"I believe a mutual respect between the clubs should stop this kind of comment," Wenger told the Guardian newspaper after his team beat a Malaysia XI 4-0 at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

"It is very disrespectful and it is not the first time that Xavi has been disrespectful to Arsenal Football Club," said the Frenchman.

"What is important is that Cesc Fabregas is contracted to Arsenal Football Club. That is a fact. Arsenal want to keep him."

Earlier, Xavi told a news conference in Catalunya that former Barcelona trainee Fabregas, who is missing from the ongoing Asia tour with a muscle injury, was desperate to return to the club he left as a 16-year-old in 2003 .

"I spoke to Cesc in Ibiza and he said he was suffering, because he really wants to come," Xavi said.

"It's what he most wants, he's done everything he can to come and wants Arsenal to let him go."

Baseball fan saved from 20-foot drop

Less than a week after a baseball fan fell to his death while catching a ball, another fan survived a 20-foot drop by the skin of his teeth after being saved by his friends.

Keith Carmickle was watching the 'Home Run Derby' at the MLB All-Star event in Phoenix, Arizona when he climbed on a small drinks table to try and get a better chance of catching a ball.

After failing to grab a ball that came in his direction, Carmickle lost his balance - and his momentum carried him over the small railing head first.

It looked as if Carmickle would fall 20 feet to a hard surface but his brother, a friend and a handful of fans managed to grab hold of him at the key moment and pull him back over the railings to safety.

Afterwards Carmickle admitted he thought he was about to lose his life.

He said: "I stepped up on the table, I missed the ball by two or three feet and went over. I thought, 'I've lived a good life'."

His friend Aaron Nelos added: "He tried to catch it, I grabbed his legs and his brother grabbed his arms. So when he went over the ledge, we pulled him back. He wasn't going down, I was holding on."

The incident was dramatically captured by a group of photographers who were positioned near that area.

Last Thursday, fan Shannon Stone fell to his death at Texas Rangers Ballpark after catching a ball tossed to him by Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton during the second inning.

Reaching for the ball, he toppled over a railing. Television pictures showed him falling some 20 feet from the outfield seats to a paved area behind a scoreboard.

That incident happened almost a year to the day after a similar accident at Rangers Ballpark when fan Tyler Morris fell from the second level to the lower bowl while trying to catch a foul ball on July 6, 2010. He suffered a fractured skull and broken ankle.

Coach faults Eguavoen formation

Ghana’s coach Akwasi Appiah faulted Eguavoen’s formation and said “you couldn’t have played 4-5-1 formation against us and survived going by the way we played.

After our early goal, I expected Nigeria to change but they did not and I knew we would score more goals. Just one more goal was enough to put us through but we could have scored more.

Meanwhile,Dream team Coach Coach Austin Eguavoen admitted that Ghana were a better side in yesterday’s game.  “I must admit that the first goal disoriented us. It came early and we couldn’t put our game together.

I missed some players but I don’t want to give that as a reason. Ghana were better, no doubt about this. It is a pity that same Ghana eliminated our female team from the All Africa Games. We are all disappointed.”

Zidane to be Real Madrid's 'Director of football'

Zinedine Zidane will start working as Real Madrid's 'director of football' from next week, the former France great said on Thursday.

The 39-year-old, who was voted World Player of the Year on three occasions, has been working at the Spanish club as president Florentino Perez's special adviser.

"We are going to start working in the role as director of football to the first team," Zidane told reporters.

"(Coach Jose) Mourinho has been fundamental in this, but so has the president as well."

When asked what the role would involve, he replied: "We shall see. Everyone has been asking me the same question, but I will be there from next Monday, until the end of the season."

Zidane could be taking on some of the responsibilities that used to be handled by Jorge Valdano until the Argentine was sacked from as director general at the end of last season.

The relationship between Valdano and Mourinho, who was appointed coach in 2010, steadily deteriorated last term.

Perez's decision to ditch his right-hand man Valdano and back Mourinho in May was a victory for the Portuguese as he sought to gain more influence over sporting matters at the nine-time European champions.

Mourinho had petitioned for Zidane to work more closely with the first team last season and it was the former Real playmaker who helped convince the club to buy French defender Raphael Varane from Lens last week.

Argentina fail to spark in Colombia draw at Copa America

Once again, despite on paper having an embarrassment of riches in an attack spearheaded by Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez, the albiceleste on Wednesday managed to flunk what was their first ever competitive international in the northeastern city of Santa Fe.

"They were tough opponents, they knew how to mark us," said Tevez afterwards.

"Things are not going for us right now the way we want them to," said Argentina coach Sergio Batista, who replaced Diego Maradona after last summer's World Cup. But he said he would still not make "major changes" for the final group game against Costa Rica as he maintained he was confident in his side.

"We have a game against Costa Rica and if we win that we will have five points and go through. We have to keep calm," Batista insisted, adding he understood fans' frustration at the slow start to the event.

Colombian counterpart Hernan Dario Gomez said he believed that his side "turned in a decent showing and I think we are laying the building blocks for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers," said Gomez, who added he still thought Argentina were a very capable side who would challenge for the Copa title.

Colombian defender Mario Yepes insisted his side were superior.

"We played well and had chances to win it - that much is clear by the fact their keeper was man of the match," said the Milan star.

The hosts could easily have lost and would have had Dayro Moreno not missed a sitter on 25 minutes with the goal at his mercy following a mix-up in the Argentinian defence. Moreno also hit the side netting with another chance while Sergio Romero made a string of fine stops in the Argentine goal.

Colombia remain top of the group with four points having seen off the Costa Ricans, who meet Bolivia on Thursday, in their opening match.

A 40,000 crowd watched with horrified fascination as the team that had so laboured to find its feet against the Bolivians once again struggled to impress, showing no sign that it can end an 18-year trophy drought.

Messi's sloping shoulders and scowls told their own story but Batista left him and Tevez out there to soak up the full 90 minutes punishment.

The Argentinian coach added to his attacking options by throwing on opening-day scorer Sergio Aguero for Ezequiel Lavezzi on the hour and then Gonzalo Higuain for Ever Banega with 20 minutes remaining.

But still a breakthrough proved elusive in a dour game which had none of the drama of a hattrick of missed penalties by former albiceleste striker Martin Palermo in 1999 against the Colombians or indeed the latter's 5-0 romp in a World Cup qualifier in 1993.

Super Falcons break 12yr-jinx -Beat Canada 1-0

Super Falcons Of  Nigeria

THE Super Falcons yesterday in Dresden, Germany, ended their campaign at the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup on a good note with a 1-0 victory over Canada to break the 12-year old jinx.

It will be recalled that the Falcons last won in a World Cup game at USA '99 when the team beat Denmark 2-0, also in a last group match.

A mild drama ensued after 70 minutes of play due to power outage at the stadium which forced the game to be put on hold for 10 minutes. The game was restarted after power was restored.

The Falcons lost three gilt-edged chances in the first half as Ebere Orji in the 19th minute failed to beat the Colombian goalkeeper on a one-on-one situation.

Orji again in the 25th minute hit the woodwork with the Colombian goalkeeper already displaced while striker Perpetua Nkwocha, followed suit in the 43rd minute when her effort was stopped also by the woodwork.

The match winner for the Falcons later turned out to be Nkwocha in the 84th minute, when she connected a loose ball into the net. 

It was Nkwocha's first goal at the World Cup after featuring in three past finals from USA 2003.

Juventus consider move for Mikel

Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel could be on his way to the Italian Serie A if reports out of the Italian peninsula are anything to go by. According to reports in Italy, Juventus have tabled a bid of £15 million for the Chelsea player in their bid to reinforce their midfield and mount a genuine challenge for the league title in the fast approaching 2011/2012 season.

Juventus finished a lowly seventh in the Serie A last season which meant an exclusion from European competition in the upcoming season for a side that has won more top flight titles than any other club in Italy with a record 27 championships.

The Turin based club already boasts of the likes of Felipe Melo, Mohamed Sissoko and Claudio Marchisio in the middle of the park and recently grabbed former AC Milan star Andrea Pirlo on a free transfer.

But new manager, Antonio Conte, himself a former player of the club, is keen to bolster competition for places and considers the 24-year-old Mikel as a good midfield enforcer to have alongside the more creative Pirlo who however doesn’t have age on his side at 32 years.

£15 million price tag

According to Italian newspaper Leggo, Chelsea have slapped a £15 million price tag on the Nigerian, who might find it difficult breaking into the Chelsea first team under new manager Andre Villas-Boas.

There are some problems, though, as Mikel does not have an European Union passport, so would take up the only slot reserved for non-EU passport-carrying new signings this summer. Serie A sides are limited to just one new non-EU player to be brought in from outside the league.

Mikel joined Chelsea in June 2006 from Norway’s Lyn Oslo for £16 million and has since gone on to make over 130 league appearances for the London-based club.

He however faces stiff competition for a spot in the midfield from the likes of Michael Essien, Ramires, Frank Lampard and Yossi Benayoun.

Clichy Signs Four-year Man City Deal

Clichy has moved to City in a reported £7m deal

Arsenal full-back Gael Clichy has signed a four-year deal with Premier League rivals Manchester City, reports the BBC.

The 25-year-old moves to Eastlands for a reported fee of £7m.

The defender, who joined the Gunners from French club Cannes in 2003, is City boss Roberto Mancini's first signing of the summer.

"I'm really happy to be joining such a great club. I hope I can add to the quality we already have here because we have a fantastic squad," he said.

"I can't wait to get started and I think anything is possible with this team."

The defender, who joined the Gunners from French club Cannes in 2003 and has 10 France caps, will contest the City left-back position with Aleksandar Kolarov.

Clichyreportedly told Arsenal he wanted to leave last month, and had been linked with Liverpool and Roma.

The Frenchman spent the first half of his career with Arsenal as cover for Ashley Cole, but became a regular in Arsene Wenger's side over the past five seasons following Cole's move to Chelsea.

Clichywill be officially unveiled during City's forthcoming tour of the USA and Canada.

His move comes at a tricky time for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, with playmaker Cesc Fabregas again being linked with Barcelona.

Midfielder Sami Nasri has also been tipped to leave the club, and is thought to be a target for both Manchester City and Manchester United.

Djokovic wins 1st Wimbledon title-Now world NO 1

Novak Djokovic claimed his first Wimbledon title in the 125 years of the tennis competition's history and he did it by beating the former number one and defending champion, Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 6-1, 1-6 and 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes.

This was the fifth final meeting between both players and Djokovic confirmed his superiority over the Spaniard with the four-set victory.

Djokovic, who will be revealed as the new number one today, had too much for the defending champion but for the third set that Nadal really had the Serb on the ropes. It was a resumption of normal service in the fourth set but it took till the seventh game for Djokovic to break Nadal and from that point there was no turning back for the Serbian bomber.

Djokovic, has lost just one match so far this year - the French Open semi-final to Roger Federer - and confirmed on Wimbledon centre court that he is the best player on the men's circuit.

This will also be Nadal's first time of losing to anyone other than Roger Federer in a Grand Slam final. The win also improved Djokovic's record in 2011 to 48 matches won in 49 matches. He has now beaten Nadal twice on hardcourts, twice on clay and now once on grass.

The Serb's victory was witnessed by the Serbian president Boris Tadic, who was in the Royal Box along with several former champions like Bjorn Borg. Nadal had won 20 straight matches at the All England Club, including the 2008 epic win over Roger Federer and last year. He missed the 2009 tournament because of injury, but was playing in his fifth Wimbledon final in six years.

Nadal had been truthful about the task he was to face in the finals and he revealed that, "It's always tough to play against Novak (Djokovic), he's playing fantastic this year and has only been beaten once.

I've lost four times already against him but I will try my best, as always." Nadal did try his best but his best was just not enough to stop the dream of Djokovic.

And after the loss, Nadal was gracious in defeat saying, "I could have beaten almost everybody today, but not Djokovic, because he just played unbelievable. He was everywhere. He returns unbelievable all the time on his baseline."

Djokovic trailed Nadal 16-11 in head-to-head meetings going into the final and had never beaten his opponent in any grand slam final - they met in the final match of the 2010 US Open, which Nadal won to complete his Grand Slam titles.

But nobody will be betting confidently against Djokovic repeating his win in the US, come September. And then it will be left for him to win the French Open

Ghana to host Nigeria in Kumasi

Nigeria’s crucial All Africa Games qualifier against Ghana will no longer come up in Accra but in Kumasi.

The game had initially been billed to come up at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra, venue of the final match of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, with the Nigerian team enjoying a two goal cushion after winning the first leg tie in Benin 3-1.

But the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has informed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that the second leg of the final qualifying fixture between the Under-23 teams of both nations will now be played in Kumasi, which is 250 kilometres Northwest of Accra.

The game comes up at the Baba Yara Stadium, which is Ghana’s biggest stadium with a sitting capacity of 40,500, and which serves as the home ground of one of Ghana’s most popular club side, Asante Kotoko.

In addition, the GFA also announced that the game will now come up on Sunday, July 10 instead of Saturday, July 9.

Fan power

The decision to shift the match venue comes just days after a leading member of the supporters group of Asante Kotoko, Ali Maradona appealed to the GFA to bring the crucial second leg match to the 52-year-old stadium.

To qualify for September’s All Africa Games in Mozambique, Ghana will need to beat the Nigerians by at least two unreplied goals.

And the Kotoko chieftain, in an interview with Ghana’s Asempa Sports on Monday, stated that if GFA boss Kwasi Nyantakyi took the game from Accra to Kumasi, the Ghanaian team will definitely qualify for the All Africa Games ahead of the Nigerians.

According to the Kotoko supporter, in an interview with Ghana’s Asempa Sports, Kumasi will be the ideal place for the Ghana Under-23 side to secure qualification to the All Africa Games.

Falcons crash out of World Cup

The Super Falcons have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of tournament hosts Germany last night in Frankfurt.

With France beating Canada 4-0 earlier in the day, the Super Falcons needed to avoid defeat against the Germans to stand a chance of progressing to the quarter finals. But following a goalless first half, Simone Laudehr scored early in the second half to hand the Germans the lead which they held on to for the remainder of the Group A encounter.

The win moved the Germans into a tie for first place in Group A with France with six points apiece, while the Nigerians and Canadians remain in search of their first point of the tourney.
