Dangote Group has continued to garner global laurels as it recently in London emerged as the African Business of the Year. The president/chief executive of the Group, Aliko Dangote also clinched the African Business Leader of the Year award.
The award was organised by the London-based African Business magazine, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Business Council (CBC) and BusinesssinAfrica Events.
Dangote Group won the African Business of the Year trophy ahead of other shortlisted companies such as Bidco Oil Refineries (Kenya), Citadel Capital (Egypt), Ecobank (Togo) and Oando Plc (Nigeria).
President of the Group was awarded the African Business Leader of the Year in recognition of his efforts as a driver of change with the courage and imagination to make difficult decisions with long term value and sustainability in mind which can ultimately transform corporations. He beat five other companies from Kenya and South Africa.
Mr Dangote caused a revolution in the cement industry by consolidating the Group’s cement concerns across Africa into Dangote Cement Plc, recently, in line with his vision of creating a pan-African conglomerate.
Dangote Cement, one of the four quoted subsidiaries of the Group, is currently the biggest company quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
Receiving the awards, Mr Dangote commended the organisers for presenting the new face of African champions to the world. “Reforms are changing the face of doing business in the continent,” he said. “Over 84 percent of economies in sub-Saharan Africa have implemented regulatory reforms making it easier to do business.”
