NLC, TUC suspend street protest in Ondo

ONDO State chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress NLC and Trade Union Congress TUC, yesterday, suspended ongoing street protest against the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government and told workers to stay at home in continuation of the strike.

Speaking in Akure, state chairman of NLC and TUC Comrades Bosede Daramola and Femi Bosede, respectively, said their action was as a result of plans by miscreants to hijack the protest to cause mayhem in the state.

But the civil society groups in the state insisted that they would continue with the street protest despite the pulling out by the two unions.

While the two unions did not take part in yesterday’s street protest, the civil society including ASUU, Justice and Peace Development Commission, JDPC, and other Human right groups stormed major streets protesting the removal of the subsidy.

Vanguard gathered that following reports that some politicians were planning to hijack the mass protest the leaders of the two Unions met with the security chiefs in the state on the need to suspend the street protest which they had led for three days.

According to investigation, some politicians had mobilised thugs to hijack the protest to cause violence in the state as the protest entered the fourth day yesterday.

The plan was said to have leaked to the Unions leaders who later met with top security Chiefs in the state to re-strategies.

A letter to that effect was said to have been forwarded to the National body of the two Unions for notification.

The leaders of the two unions however asked members of the public including the workers in the state to continue to stay indoor until the workers demands are met by the Federal government

Meanwhile addressing the rally yesterday one of the leaders of the Civil Right Group Dr Bayo Aborisade gave President Goodluck Jonathan till today to reverse the action failure of which he would be asked to vacant the position.
