Eighty-four persons died in 137 road traffic accidents in Nasarawa in 2011, the state's Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO), Alhaji Yusuf Idris, said on Tuesday.

Idris said in Lafia that 81 others sustained various degrees of injury.

He blamed most of the accidents on reckless driving and cautioned motorists to respect traffic regulations and the rights of other road users.

“Most of the accidents are as a result of non-compliance of motorists with rules and regulations guiding road usage,” the Chief VIO said, noting that 156 accidents were recorded in 2010.

He said the resolution of the vehicle inspection department in 2012 was to deal with motorists who failed to comply with road signs.

According to him, defaulters will be made to pay fines through banks.

Idris said the new number plates would soon be launched in the state and called on motorists to comply with the new order.

On challenges facing the department, he identified inadequate manpower and called on the state government to look into it to enable VIOs to perform effectively.
