Boko Haram: Yobe govt not cooperating with us

Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has denounced allegations by the Yobe State government that it was in touch with the association over the precarious security situation occasioned by activities of the Boko Haram Islamic sect in the state.

CAN decried a statement by the state government that it was liaising with the union over problems being faced by its members as announced by the Special Adviser on Press Affairs and Information to Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego.

The umbrella body for Christians said the information was false, adding: “Till today (yesterday), efforts to see the governor and the Emir so far have proved abortive.”

State Chairman of CAN, Reverend Garba Idi, who made this known in a statement in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, said: “Our President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, had aired our frustration in failed attempts to meet Governor Ibrahim Geidam and the Emir of Damaturu, Alhaji Shehu Ibn-Elkalemi Hashimi II.

“But the state government debunked this claim. I want to declare that CAN, Yobe State Chapter, stands by the statement made by our leader, Pastor Oritsejafor. We brief him regularly on every move we make on the problem of insecurity and unprovoked attacks on us; the wanton destruction of our places of worship and personal property.

“Yobe State CAN leadership formally applied for an audience with the state governor through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, MORA. But the Permanent Secretary declined to fix the appointment for us and he claimed to be representing the governor.”
