A boat from a riverine village in Ojota that was conveying some pupils to their school located in Otto Awori in Lagos state, was capsized by the heavy rainstorm that ravaged Lagos on Monday.

10 pupils and two women were drowned, as it was confirmed that the passengers were not putting on any life jacket when their boat overturned into the lagoon, ...except man who paddled the canoe.

The pupils of St. Mary Anglican Nursery and Primary School, Igbede that lost their lives are; Mistura Hassan (9), Fausat Hassan (7), Micheal Eniola (12), Tope Rufai, Aminat Tijani, Ayisat Hassan, Afisat Hassan, Abigail Aminu, Oniru Muyibi and Nofisat Aminu.

We are appealing to Lagos state government and the operators of these boats to ensure that basic safety measures are put in place and adhered to ensure that these preventable incidents can be managed right from the start.

It is certain that if these pupils were wearing their life jackets, the deaths toll should have not been this high.

May God give their families the strength to bear the loss...
