THREE months after killing four persons during a bank raid in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the police in the state have apprehended five robbery suspects (all ex-convicts) that carted away about N22million during the operation.
The sharing formula was said to have led to their arrest as the leader of the gang now at large only gave the suspects N500, 000 each.
To show the authenticity of their catch, the Police led by the Police Commissioner Sani Mogaji led the suspects to the bank to demonstrate to the police, some members of the public and newsmen how they carried out the operation on November 22 last year.
The five suspects including one described by the Police as an Evangelist, Wale Aselu, on November 22 last year invaded a new generation bank in Akure, killed five persons and carted away N22 million.
The State Police Commissioner Sani Mogaji while parading them and others including another gang that robbed the Ifon branch of an old generation bank on September 27 last year said two persons, a civilian and a police inspector were killed during the operation.
On the five robbers that raided the new generation bank in Akure, the Police Chief said that the Evangelist was the coordinator of the operation and that a pre-operation conference was held in his church.
Mogaji added that the suspects included Ikechukwu Maduagwu, Fayemi Albert Olabusuyi, Mukaila Raji and Ropo Adeleye.
All the suspects confessed to newsmen during interrogation that they took part in the robbery while Ropo said he was given N100,000 for showing them the way of escape through Ikogosi in Ekiti State.
Ikechuwkwu said that he was asked to only park the money into Ghana Must Go bags during the robbery.
The Evangelist was said to have been arrested at a church in Akure following which he reportedly “sang” and others were picked up at their different hides out outside the state.
Speaking on the Ifon robbery, Mogaji said suspects included Chima Osuji, Chimezie Michael and Lucky Sunday.
Mogaji disclosed that “in the course of our investigations, we uncovered the identity of one Augustine Olumogwe who was the herbalist of the gang who later confessed to the crime.”
Also, three other persons suspected pipeline vandalism including Awolola Olabode, Oluyemi Adeniyi and Olalekan Ijaodoro have been arrested by a combined team of soldiers and policemen.
The combined team of security operative intercepted a Toyota Dyna truck with registration number XV 200 APP which was loaded with 30 kegs of petroleum products along Ore-Odigbo road.
