Six dead bodies riddled with bullets were found dumped yesterday at the Yelwa area in Mubi, Adamawa State, after residents heard gunshots and saw two Hilux pick up vehicles passing around the place in the early morning hours.
Resident Ahmed told the BBC Hausa monitored yesterday that when they heard shootings at about 3.10 am, they peeped out of their homes and saw two Hilux vehicles. Shortly after, the vehicles left and residents saw dead bodies on the ground.
Ahmed said about an hour after the first shootings, they saw the vehicles coming into the area again.
In the morning the corpses were found. Two of the bodies were of local boys, named as Abdulmalik and Nuru. The other four were not identified, he added.
Asked if they identified the people in the Hilux vehicles, Ahmed said they were most likely Military men because they were known to use those type of vehicles in the town.
He said one of the boys was not seen by his family for three days and that each time his phone was called over the period, somebody would answer and say the boy was around somewhere in the town and would soon be back home.
Abubakar Bello, who also resides in Mubi, told Daily Trust by telephone: “We just woke up this morning to see the dead bodies. They were killed somewhere and dumped here by their killers.”
But Bello said he did not hear any shooting before seeing the corpses yesterday.
Another resident, Isa Audu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that they heard gun shots at about 4am, only to wake up to see the dead bodies lined up on the street.
“We heard gun shots and later in the morning, we saw dead bodies in the neighbourhood. “The bodies were arranged in single file, with some of them in under-wear shorts and vests,” said Audu, himself looking terrified.
He added that the discovery had forced some families to flee the area for fear of what might likely occur as a result of the incident.
Adamawa State Police Commissioner, Mr Aderene Shinaba, confirmed the killings, adding that investigation into the matter had commenced.
“I can confirmed to you that our men in Mubi town in the early hours of today reported to me that six dead bodies of unknown persons were found and I asked them to take photograph of the corpses and later be deposited at mortuary,” he said.
Shinaba said that the corpses had been deposited at the General Hospital, Mubi, and called on residents not to panic as the command would do everything possible to safeguard lives and property.
Later yesterday, reports say sounds of gun shots and explosions were heard in Mubi, but there were no details as to what exactly happened.
Mubi has seen recurring violence since January when many Christians were shot dead while they were holding a meeting at a hall.
Most of the violence was blamed on Boko Haram, whose base is in neighbouring Borno State.
