The lawyer for the US soldier being held over the killing of 16 Afghan civilians has said there is very little evidence against his client.
After a meeting with Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, John Henry Browne said: "There's no forensic evidence.
"There's no medical examiner's evidence. There's no evidence about how many alleged victims or where those remains are.
"So it's fascinating from a defence lawyer's perspective. Prove it."
Asked if there was evidence of a crime, Mr Browne replied: "I really don't know. Certainly from what I've read, there's very little."
Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is being held in a military detention centre in Kansas awaiting charges over the shooting in Kandahar.
Mr Browne added: "He has some memories of what occurred that evening before the supposed incident, and he has some memories of what happened after the alleged incident.
"But he really doesn't have memory of what happened between."
Bales is suspected of walking off his base in southern Afghanistan on March 11 and gunning down the 16 civilians, including nine children and three women, in a massacre that damaged US-Afghan relations.
The 38-year-old has not yet been charged, but an official from his home base near Tacoma, Washington, has said charges are expected to be filed by the end of this week.
Bales' wife said what she had seen in reports was "completely out of character of the man I know and admire".
In a statement, Karilyn Bales said: "My family, including my and Bob's extended families, are all profoundly sad.
"We extend our condolences to all the people of the Panjwayi district, our hearts go out to all of them, especially to the parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents of the children who perished."
