Gunmen yesterday stormed the residence of a retired police inspector in the daylight and killed him along with two of his friends at Dala Kafanti, a suburb of Maiduguri metropolis.

Resident Bako Mantau said there was tension in the area shortly after the killings. “He (ex- police officer) was chatting with friends when the gunmen fired shots with AK47 rifles which they brought out from their clothes. The shootings were sporadic and terrifying,” he said.

Spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno State, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, told newsmen that the retired inspector was killed shortly after a failed attack on one of the locations of the JTF operatives.

According to him, “some suspected members of Boko Haram on a Keke NAPEP (tricycle) attacked one of the JTF Operation Restore Order 1 locations at Dala Kafanti in Maiduguri city.

“The attack was repelled and sect members retreated through narrow paths to different locations, only to reorganize and shot at a retired police inspector and two of his friends right in front of his house at about 1.45pm,” the spokesman said. He said the whole area was cordoned off and searched.
