The Police in Asaba, Delta State have dismantled a five-man robbery gang that has been terrorizing the Benin-Asaba Expressway in the last few months.
Police authorities in Asaba yesterday confirmed that members of the gang were killed by patrol team of the Police on Friday upon a tip-off that they (armed robbers) were raiding members of the pubic along the Ogwashi-Uku axis of the expressway.
The police spokesman in the state Mr. Charles Muka said the patrol team led by ASP Dalandi stormed the scene, during which there was a shoot out that left the five man gang dead.
Items recovered from them he said, included two locally made pistols and forty cartridges.
Sources said robbery activities along Benin/Asaba Express-way have been horrendous with several persons reportedly killed, and their belonging carted away.
However, police authorities claimed they have recorded tremendous success with a view to bringing many of the high-way robbers to book.
Only last Wednesday, the Police gunned-down two robbery suspects at Igbodo on the same Express-Way, while operating with sophisticated weapons.
Meanwhile, residents of Ibusa community are treatened by the robbery menace which is a daily occurrence. Reports said the gun-totting robbers have made the community a war zone for robbery activities as they shoot sporadically to scare the residents before carrying out their nefarious acts.
Some residents who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity however, appealed to the Police authority to come to their aid.
